I'm sorry, but I just don't get it...the Micro sim was small to begin with now the nano sim is even smaller, though not small enough for me to see what significant difference it will make on a phone for it to be a bit smaller... what can they pack in there with that 40% piece of micro space??? they got from reducing it's size...

Battery

If this helps Apple design better phones, I'm all for it...

However, I'm not exactly looking forward to changing these Nano-SIMs between phones... I find standard SIM cards challenging enough!

We're talking about iPhones. And most iPhones are indeed locked, since getting them unlocked would cost far too much for most people. So if 90% of iPhone are locked, then only 10% actually need a SIM card, since the whole point of a SIM card is that it's removable. But if you're locked to using that one SIM anyway, then what's the point?

I'm pretty sure that if you look, most iPhones are sold:

-by carriers that sell them unlocked
-directly by Apple unlocked
-by carriers that will unlock them at ANY time (not just after the contract like AT&T)

Here in the UK, all of the carriers unlock iPhones and the most expensive network charges £20 ($30) to do it.

The United States is a very atypical market.

please why do we even need sim cards anymore? i mean surely this can all be done in software with no need to ever change a sim card again. Does anyone know why we are putting 90s chips in high end phones these days!

For those with problem hands?

I recently changed the sim in my iPad2 while on holiday; needed to get better coverage.

I have rheumatiode arthritis, which affects my hands. The task of changing the existing sim was a little challenging due to the tiny size of the sim card, and the fecklessness of my swollen fingers. The prospet of having to deal with a nano sim is not exactly promising to people in general (given some of the feedback here) let alone to people like me with dodgy hands.

Honestly, how much sapce does this really save in hardware terms anyway?

Wait, the nano SIM is basically just the chip of a micro SIM card? Something everyone at home could "design" with a pair of scissors? Then why did they make the intermediate step with the micro SIM?

I think there is a little more to it than that, but probably close to that.
The imagine is most likely a mock up and if you read the article the Apple design has a notch in it for easy ejecting. (push ejecting)

Nope... the Moto/RIM design was the one with the notch.
Apple's design is basically a blunt rectangle that requires a SIM tray.

And no, there is no difference other than the shape.
Functionality is the same as the current micro-SIM cards.
