I guess it's cool but, you can get better portable monitors than an ipad for a display.

But then you may be carrying TWO screens about the same size when one can do both jobs. This is a convenience benefit: make an iPad stand in for a whole other screen if this need is important to someone.

Else, think of all of the things an iPhone does beyond being a cell phone. Just about all of those things have a better option than an iPhone for that purpose. But good luck carrying all of that better stuff to scratch all itches generally scratched by iPhone diverse utility. Camera? Flashlight? iPod? Computer? Television? Internet Browser? Tape Measure? Et all!

Curious to know if this works with cameras?
this will be such a big benefit for photography

does this mean I can hookup iPad to my camera via HDMI as a camera display?
Yes. But just as a reference monitor. For a more complete and thorough functionalities, you still have to rely on professional monitors like Atomos.
Still, I finally find a use case for my iPad mini while imagining what it feels like hooking up a 12.9" iPad Pro on top a camera via its hot shoe 😂

It's a GORGEOUS app... but that's about it. It's laggy, buggy & has MASSIVE screen tearing in games.

I've also noticed the sound & video often refuses to reconnect when multitasking. Even killing the app doesn't work: you have to unplug/replug the HDMI dongle.

Kinda regretting paying for the Pro upgrade. The design won me over but I should have tested it first! Hopefully they'll fix the bugs...

Conversely... Genki Studio has none of these issues for me! Been on the TestFlight for a while & have been really happy with it!

Are there any apps like OBS for iPad?

update: had a wee look and there are, might have a mess about with this stuff at the weekend.

Right. You can use a hub.

I've got a setup for My Yamaha that needs a USB-2 (USB to HDMI) adapter that outputs HDMI into one of these USB adapter cards (redundant, but wtf, shows you what can be done), that outputs it back to USB, then into the iPad. Of course, you wouldn't need to do this, or would want to, Unless you have a Yamaha MODX or PSR. Maybe other brands have this also. Note: there's a hub in there for power, both for the iPad and the devices. So it's USB-A to a USB to HDMI adapter, then into a HDMI to USB adapter. The adapters are different, and both are needed, but you are dealing with a HDMI signal now. Before it was just some kind of DisplayPort.

Sorry I'm hijacking this thread. Just thought there's going to be confusion about this.
What hub lets you charge your iPad and connect to a USBC device as well?

I wish we had small 16:9 LCD monitors in the market.
I don’t understand why large screens are prioritized instead of high dpi.
You can buy portable 13" and 15" 4K monitors. Basically, repurposed laptop panels.

Reminds me of this... all these devices replaced by a simple smartphone:

i do lots of photography and videography , i use a hardware to iphone and ipad called accsoon seemo which does similar i wonder why this is limited to usb c since it’s basically the same as accsoon seemo . no clue why apple is withholding this on lightning port.

it should just need a capture card ; technical you need something more legit go for accsoon seemo since it has histograms and anamorphic desqueeze mode, and custom logs

Do the latter apps work flawlessly?

I really don’t get why Apple still didn’t implement external display feature on iPads.
