I used mine for five hours yesterday and it never got warm at all :)

64GB White Wifi only

Yes, 32GB Verizon model. Gets unusually (compared to iPad2) warm when browsing web, or using light apps. Gets really hot when playing games. By very hot I mean hard to hold. iPad 2 got warm when playing games, but never hot.

I posted on apple forum as well, really want to figure out if it's all of them, and just return it unless it cures itself, or if I got a defective one.

Mine got noticeably warm twice: once when downloading a bunch of apps from the store, and again today when I played Infinity Blade II for about an hour and a half.

If I'd been holding it bare metal, I'd probably have been a little uncomfortable the second time. It wasn't burn instantly warm, but it was warm enough that I could see it cooking over time (sort of like laptops can if you go skin-to-metal on them).

No shutdown problems or anything, though, so it didn't overheat in iPad terms--just quite a bit hotter than usual. I'd compare it to only somewhat cooler than the hot part of my MacBook Air when it gets cranking.

One consideration is that I do have a Smart Cover and Belkin Snap Shield on mine. One or both might be interfering with the ability of the back to be a heat sink.

The review I saw this evening on G4TV said that the spot on the new iPad getting warm is where the GPU is located, and that the metal back of the iPad should be dispersing the heat (I think he meant that it was absorbing and spreading it out, or that it should). They didn't make a big deal out of it, so I assume that saying that it's "overheating" is an overstatement of the facts. Some laptops gets uncomfortably warm too, but they aren't actually overheating.

The iPad 3 that purchased on 3/16/12 did heat up a lot. My husband insisted that I take it back. I did and the second one got a little warm which was normal. I kept it. I love it now!

I did notice the warmness on my wifi version. But it isnt something I was concerned with as I was expecting it to be somewhat warm considering this thing doesn't have a fan. First night it seemed to be much warmer than it is now- perhaps it was working at full speed getting itself setup?

How warm is too warm

I have a black 32GB wifi only new IPad with a red smart cover - no screen protector, nothing on the back.

I have been reading stuff on Reeder for the last hour or so and not only is the entire back of the iPad very warm but the glass on the front feels warm to the touch as well. I was only reading

I have screen on automatic brightness and it's at about the halfway mark as its daylight here.

So how do you know what is too hot? No apple store nearby but a reseller (purchased direct from Apple). Just wondering whether to worry, notify Apple in case it gets worse or just wait and see? How do you even measure the temps on an iPad without external gear? Is there like an iStat equivalent for iPads?

My 32gb wifi gets a little warm after some use, certaintly not overheating.
Just like my laptop, pc, tv, and they've been working just fine for years.

Got uncomfortably warm once

Got uncomfortably warm when I used videoStar app to record a project, it was under indirect sunlight (thin clouds covering the sun) but it got warm enough that i didn't like holding it anymore.

Transcoding the file from VideStar was another story (it was helluva fast!)

I'll take note not to use the iPad for über intensive apps from now on.

Otherwise, i love it!

116 is considered room temperature in many parts of the Sahara Desert. I don't see any problem.

ipad 3 overheating issue - live with it

I am not surprised with the faulty design and it is an ongoing problem. With today's competitions, companies does not have the luxury to have their new products tested extensively, they need to roll out to the market as quickly as they can, their target of rolling out new models quarterly as for some. They are likely able to get away with liabilities and/or recalls of their products unlike car manufacturers.

Final word is you get what you long for and that is what excites all tech gigs and all

Mine gets a bit warm, but not uncomfortable. Actually, it feels kinda nice during cold mornings.
