The reason it got shot down in the other thread is because its a tired argument and doesn't make sense.
Apple is not in the business of making a phone that everyone on the planet wants. Apple makes the best phone it knows how for the greatest number of people. It does not and will never sell things to appeal to niche's like yourself.

HOW is this a 'tired argument and doesn't make sense'? Really? How is it a niche to desire what is available in the rest of the smartphone world...a larger screen size. No one is saying 'lets get a GIGANTIC phone'. They simply have seen/tried other phones with larger, more readable screens...this is useful and more functional, for one. Heck, it helps the folks with 'older eyes' SEE what they are browsing (I hope to avoid that condition as long as I can, but in the next 20 years...smartphones will be hologram phones perhaps! ;))

The greatest number of people are not using smartphones (i.e. third-world nations), and I don't know if the smartphone market is dominated by Apple's iPhone, but from the recent charts I've seen...it is not. And the Android user base is growing (or perhaps switching FROM iPhones?).

That sentence there is why no one takes your argument seriously, because you are obviously delusional.
I cannot state this any clearer: Apple makes tens of billions (BILLIONS!) of profit (PROFIT!) from iPhone sales every quarter (QUARTER!). They make 75% of the entire mobile phone (MOBILE - not smartphone) industry's profits. The market is buying their phone as fast as they can make them and is demanding nothing except more phones. If you cannot see that, and still think or hope that Apple will take pity on the few thousand people that won't buy an iPhone because of its size, you are truly delusional. If they change the size of their phone it is because they've decided it is a better phone, not to pander to people who want a bigger phone. That is also why Apple will never make more than one phone size. They don't need to. They sell 30+ million phones per quarter. The amount of extra phones they would sell by having more than one size would be far outweighed by the costs involved in doing so (and the annoyance for developers)

Where is this 75%? There must be several different charts. Can you post a recent one? Yes, I am aware that Apple makes a lot each quarter. Good for them.

The 'size' issue has not really been around long enough (in terms of development cycles and marketing) to contest Apple...so, I am looking into the relatively near future here, in the world of smartphone demands, and predicting this is going to be more of an issue for Apple's share of the market.

Apple's screen size is not really the draw...so I don't know why it's defended this much. They have a neat OS and it's ease of use, UI, etc...this is all great (for the most part, though techies like myself do get miffed here and there, but I understand why I bought it, so that's fine).

I bet they would sell just as many IF NOT MORE iPhones with a larger screen size...AGAIN, this doesnt have to change the dimensions of the phone that dramatically (and it's not like there aren't thin/slick larger Android phones available).

(I posted this on a previous thread, and got one snarky response. However, since I have seen a few replies on this thread with respect to aspect ratio and the idea of several models/sizes, I am reposting this).

Perhaps, some of these questions have already been answered before. FYI, I have a 3GS and have been waiting for a larger screen to debut on the iPhone (since I really don't want to go to Android and live separate mobile lives)...but:

1 - Why is it so difficult for Apple to design/accept a larger screen size for the iPhone? We have an iPad, with a different resolution that conforms to the 'amazing, mystical' retina requirements (e.g. ppi, etc). Then, there are the rumors of the iPad 7". So, hey, we can go 7"!

Also, why would a 'taller' iPhone settle this argument? Wouldn't that create totally non-proportional resolutions, and make things worse for app developers, etc.?

2- Maybe this is a simpler bullet, but Angry Birds (for example) is on every fricking smartphone...of every screen resolution, ppi, display size, etc...in the Android world, for instance. It's on iPad 10" and will be on iPad 7"...so...what is the issue? What am I missing? (Seriously, I plead ignorance on this; so can anyone explain it, in brief?).

3 - Yes, I have heard the 'I don't care' remark about the screen size (perhaps they use their iPads more for 'larger screen' tasks and therefore don't care?). Fine...make a SMALLER phone for them (some even say that! ) and make a second iPhone, like the rumored iPad 7" as the alternative to the 10"...there IS a market for that, and they need to use it. Every phone coming out is larger for a reason. The market demands it.

Samsung has how many models? LG? So, come out with an iPhone that is 4.5"+ and keep the damn 3.5" for those that don't care or want it small.

I have seen the light with the Samsung Note. (5.3" screen size)..it's pretty much the largest that I could use as a phone. Great...so that has been determined, the race is over for 'who can make the largest thing they call a phone'. In fact, it's a little too large (but, good for NBA players!)...so i'd say 4.5-4.8" is optimal, and I ~might~ try a 5" if it was compact (no bezel, thin).

4" screen is not enough...'tall' proportion is not acceptable (and again, how is it helpful to proportionality/aspect ratio?). If Apple does this, it will be 5+ years before they change it again...and by the end of this year, myself and others will be making a big choice on whether to move to android -phone-wise.

Apple...4.5"+ or bust! The market is demanding it!

1. iOS apps are designed to the pixel. Android titles are made for the lowest common denominator.

2. Market is demanding a phone that people can use with one hand. In reality, iPhone is the most sold (aka demanded) smartphone on Verizon, AT&T, etc.

3. Why Android phones are larger

Isnt that what all companies do? Whatever makes the most profit?
Sure, in your little fantasy world you can have companies that pander to the whim of every person, screw the profit, but I've got news for you, this is a capitalist society and that's not how things work. So that's not how Apple works. It has figured out the most profit it can make is by designing 1 phone, and that's what it will continue to do. I'd love them to design 10 phones all .1 inch apart to satisfy every person. But it'd be a bad business decision which is why Apple won't do it. That's part of why they're so successful and part of why I love their products. They make the best product for the most number of people, not the most products for the best number of people. Sure it means a small % will be pissed they didn't make a 4.3 or a 4.8 or a 5.3" phone, but most will go buy the new iPhone and love it

Correct, it's a capitalist society (thank goodness!) and I like the iPhone just as much as the next guy, but there are a LOT of nice phones with larger, more readable and useable screens in 2012 and more will be coming...so, we will see what the demand is then.

Why do you berate people's opinions and THEN say 'I'd love them to design 10 phones all .1 inch apart to satisfy every person'...seriously, that is stupidity in a nutshell. Of course, it's a bad business decision, which is why NO ONE is saying that. Perhaps two phones (again, like the 2 iPad rumors, and different model MBP/Air's, etc.). However, 2 is more than enough, as I do understand that business decision with respect to the smartphone market and Apple's desired share-cost ratio.

Again, the future is larger screens...I don't think it's a fad. People are more mobile and they probably don't want to lug iPads everywhere ALONG with a phone.

This is such a typical response from fanboys.

First off the inevitable gross exaggeration ("I'd love them to design 10 phones all .1 inch apart to satisfy every person. But it'd be a bad business decision which is why Apple won't do it. "). Um...No, the point was having TWO phone sizes - one big, one small.
...
...
...
Lastly, making it seem that it's always the SMALL minority want a design feature that Apple won't do ("Sure it means a small % will be pissed they didn't make a 4.3 or a 4.8 or a 5.3" phone, but most will go buy the new iPhone and love it"). Um...That small % is actually most likely a very LARGE percent, with most of the rest of the entire high end smart phone market well over a 4" screen size for several years.

Yes, you can lay over the above templete in almost EVERY fanboy argument about anything Apple. :)

Nice reply! :)

(sorry for the truncation, but I had to at least re-post some of it)

It's a method of trivialization --used as a 'template' as you point out. I want substance and reason from these 'anti-large-screen'ers! ;)

Again, I bet this guy that you replied to, and the others, would be waiting in the long line the day of release if there was some 4.5" screen iPhone that kept the relative dimensions and thinness.

Fair enough, thanks for the reply and link!

I think the app/pixel issue can be remedied (and understand the difference with Android, as they have a lot of different phone sizes -er...and OS compatibilities/incompats, oddly) and agree that resolution is important to folks...but, you can't see it on a small screen ;) So...see: iPad...find: solution in-between.

I also think this can all be done in one-hand. Most smartphones are on par with this thus far...aside from the Galaxy Note (damn that is big!).

I will remain unconvinced until I'm holding an actual device!

But as an owner of an iPhone 4, I'll be in-line to upgrade to a 5 (or a "new iPhone" if they follow the iPad naming convention...

You do realized that some could do a render, print it out and then take a picture of with Nikon D90. Assuming it came from camera does not rule out that it a render.

I actually did that once with some of my renders with Lightwave 3D - so I can ideas on layout of objects.

Just let it go already.

iOS apps are usually designed to points, not pixels.

Both kinds of apps can have multiple resolution images for graphics, and everything GUI related automatically scales.

2. Market is demanding a phone that people can use with one hand.

The market is demanding a Blackberry?

Gruber needs a course in logic. For example, he wrote:

"But the iPhone’s continuing chart-topping success is proof that there is, to say the least, significant demand for smaller phones too."

The only way to see if this is true or not, would be to have two otherwise equivalent iPhone models of different sizes available at the same time.

Nope, I cannot see that being the next Apple design? But that could be because it looks stupid due to the angle of the photo and because it's just a front piece of plastic?

Anyway, considering last years balls up with the rumours! Are we supposed to believe these parts more then last year? I don't know anymore... maybe someone will find an iPhone 5/6 in a pub somewhere??

Parts look too much like the current design (except for the height of course). If past performance is any indication and I know it's not, then iPhone 5 should be a major redesign so that's what I'm expecting, not just a stretch limo version of the old phone. Maybe those parts are for some prototype that was made for testing internals? Nope, not giving up!!!!

Why would you want a phone the size of a tablet?

I'm so sick of reading this. A phone with a screen size between 4" and 4.8" is not a tablet. There are plenty of people with phones in that range and they are just fine with it. I get it, that's too big for you. So stick with the 3.5". All the guy was saying was what if they offered two sizes. One size to keep you happy and another to keep the people who like the larger screen but still want iOS.

Apple won't offer two sizes though, I would love to keep the 3.5" screen and then they could pack the same hardware in a 4.5" screen model, but this is Apple.. that's why I don't think they will ever make a 7" tablet either.
