Part of me wants Apple to fail with an upgraded 4s variant. They need to up their game and people jumping ship will force them to innovate & be cutting edge again...Either that, or they'll just take out more lawsuits!!!
Even a redesigned iphone 5 is only gonna match the competition in terms of specs, it's the design that would make it awesome...
If Samsung starts using premium materials on their phones, Apple will have a big problem.
Someone said on here about a laggy S2, well from the videos I've seen there's not a checkerboard in sight...

Competition is healthy & innovation is crucial for advancement in technology...period...

There isn't going to be a larger iPhone 5 this year. It would have definitively leaked by now if there was going to be one. The leaks about the new size have been very suspect. The current design is attractive looking, with a bumper case it is fairly robust and with larger cases very robust, and finally, iOS 5 is going to make it look like Apple has done something revolutionary with the phone. To the fans here it will look like a modest upgrade, but to standard consumers it will look awesome because they can stream all of their media content and it has wireless syncing and updates and other cool stuff. Awesome!!! Will it sell? Yes, every single one that they can make will sell as fast as they can ship them to stores. Just replacing all the 3G and 3Gs phones that are currently in service would be enough to make the iPhone 5 a hit. Many folks will sell there 4 and get the upgrade as well just for the faster processor and, presumably, increased memory.

Finally, large phones don't fit as well in pockets. So let's keep the iPhone on the small size.

Or maybe could give us a choice. A larger screen for the consumers that wish to have one and a cheaper, upgraded iphone 4 for the people who still wish to have the tiny screen.

I don't know why people are even bothering talking about this stuff anymore. It's absolutely useless.

Eff this nonsense.

The original iPhone wasn't that bad.... I still use mine.

A friend of mine was still using original phone as well until about a week ago. He had dug it up about six months ago after losing his 3G. The touch screen no longer responds now though. He can still pick up a call with the headphone button but that is only function he has left. Still great use out of it after four or so years considering how cutting edge it was. He will be buying 5 when it comes out and will be using loaner 3 from another buddy until then.

This whole naming thing though... I don't know. Just to put it this way, what do you think a good name for the 5th generation iPhone, running iOS 5 powered by an A5 chip is?

The iPhone 4S.

I'm so tired of people fighting, complAining and all that about the name that have been used in the rumors, is just a reference to distinguish between an upgraded iPhone 4 (4S) or a facelifted redesigned exterior (5). It's a freakin phone people not the second return of the savior.

Some people believe it will look almost as the current iPhone 4 but with some enhancements thus the reference to 4S like it happened with the 3G/3GS; will 4S be The name it will be released under, not necessarily. It's not about 3G speed or the S for speedy or any of that.

Some other people believe it will be a totally new iPhone And refer to it as the iPhone 5; maybe they are right and it will be released this year, maybe it'll come next June or maybe it won't be called an iPhone 5 after all, it will be the iPhone LTE or the iPhone 4G for its 4G capabilities.

According to your logic it can be released as the iPhone 15 :

5+5+5=15

Because having multiple screen sizes will mean apps have to support them. There is only two ways to do that, one is to make larger screen lower resolution so pixel count stays the same. That will make it larger screen look bad and it will confuse how both can be "retina" level displays. Second, is to have apps ship with two sets of pictures which will make life harder for developers.

There will be no fragmentation of screen sizes on apple products. iPhone and Touch iPods will all have the same screen size for now and into the foreseeable future.

This upgrade is about software and cloud computing not the hardware. The only thing the hardware is going to bring is enough processing power to seamlessly handle all the new software. I for one am really looking forward to wireless syncing and updating. That will be a very nice feature as will automatic downloading every morning of my papers and magazines. Game changer for me (though something that my original Kindle had figured out on day 1).

Just curious what specifically you are referring to here?

Shorthand for iCloud. All of your music and video will be "stored" in the cloud. You will be able to access it on the go and not be restricted to just having what the iPhone can store locally. That is going to be a big part of the pitch for iPhone 5, I think.

If Apple releases a speed-boosted iPhone 4, everybody should just go buy the iPhone 4 instead. You won't need the power of the new phone anyway. iOS5 runs perfectly well on it, no need in spending the extra money.

???

So im not sure what this could be any ideas? The iPhones 4 doesn't have it...

If the 3G iOS 4 debacle has taught anybody anything, it's that if they release a speed-boosted iPhone 4, you should definately go for the speed-boosted model.

The iPhone 3G had 3 releases of iOS, versions 2 to 4. However, it could barely run iOS 4 and a lot of features weren't available.

The iPhone 3GS (the "speed boosted 3G"... ) will have its 3rd release of iOS this fall, versions 3 to 5. It will run iOS 5 perfectly if reports from devs are to be believed and it's not getting a feature stripped version.

Well, you're mistaken because iCloud doesn't stream.

I think it's all about the "5" - with their marketing stunts, it would be a set-back for Apple's marketing if they released just another version of the iPh4 now.

Besides, everyone is talking about the iPh5...

I'm tired of the argument that a screen size/resolution change would be a lot of work for developers. Well BFD! Eventually, the resolution/szie of the screen will change. Whether it's for thie 5 or the 7, its inevitably gonna increase. A lot of developers make money off their apps, and WHEN Apple changes the size and resolution of their displays, developers will have to adapt. Do u really think their gonna say 'this is too much work' and quit? These phones will be in millions of consumers hands. Developers won't abandon it just cuz they have to do a little more work.

Did you saw any benchmarks comparing iPhone 4 and iPad 2?
A5 is about 2.5 times faster than A4 in browser benchmarks. Infinity Blade got released on iPad 2 with enhanced graphics and anti-aliasing. Games would utilize A5 dual-core processor soon to give graphics like PS Vita. iPhone 4 will soon take place of 3GS. In short, even without redesign, it's worth the upgrade.

I play Poker on my iPhone. That's about it as far as games. And I've used both the original iPad and iPad 2, as I worked at Best Buy while both of them existed, and it (the iPad 2) never was noticeably faster to me when using it for ANY of the apps that I played with during my time with it.

It very well may be faster, although being 2.5 times as fast, I highly doubt that...but if iOS5 runs perfectly well on the 4, for me there will be no point in upgrading. I'll move on to some other brand of phone that will hopefully keep me stimulated and un-bored. Phones get old quick. Every year there should be something new and innovative about the design. That's science.

What old version of iOS? How can you tell? And also, its not an old phone because the battery and reverse camera have both been upgraded here. This is probably the iPhone 4S and not the iPhone 5

It blatantly isn't running iOS 5. iOS 5 doesn't require connection to iTunes to activate

I don't play games on my phone so I could really care less if the GPU is 10000000 times more powerful. If the iphone 4 runs iOS perfectly, I'd see zero need for me to get the 4S.

have you guys noticed that every other site is calling these pictures the iphone5..?? hmm that is scary.. if this is the iphone5 then i will not buy..:(:(

They are guessing. However, that's a very real possibility given this thing has been pictured with an A5 in it. You have to come up with an explanation as to why apple might have two phones with the same processor. Perhaps they are diverging their iphone lines to cater to those who like bigger screens. It's also possible that it's more economical for them to use the A5 instead of the A4, despite the A4 being cheaper by virtue of having less than half the die area.

It could also be that Apple wants to stop selling the iphone 4 to distance themselves from the antennagate issue OR/AND they plan to make huge upgrades to iOS 6 or beyond and they don't want A4 devices still filling the pipeline that they either have to make compatible or hear users complaining about the features they don't support or slugishness, etc.

Earlier today, we noted that a new leaked photo appearing to be a partially-assembled next-generation iPhone seemed to be showing an "iPhone 4S" design running on an A5 system-on-a-chip.

MacPost now shares a photo of the other side of the partial device, revealing that it is indeed an iPhone 4-like design. The new photo even shows the iPhone 4S turned on in its partially assembled state, requesting connection to iTunes for activation.

The new photo also clarifies the battery situation, revealing it to still be a 3.7 V, 5.3 Whr battery delivering 1430 mAh of charge, compared to the slightly lower-capacity 1420 mAh battery found in the iPhone 4. The 4.2 V figure spotted on the original photo posted earlier today was from the backside of the battery and appears to have been referring to the maximum charge voltage, as opposed to the 3.7 V nominal voltage under load.

Apple has also been rumored to be introducing a substantially redesigned iPhone 5 alongside this iPhone 4S, although there has been little concrete evidence of such a device showing up in parts leaks or supply chain channel checks. Third-party cases for the rumored iPhone 5 appear to show a substantially larger but thinner design than found in the iPhone 4.

Fake... It's just a photo of a white Iphone 4 and the inside of an iphone 4.

a cheaper Iphone 4? they could do that without creating a whole seperate product line. If they were to come out with an Iphone 4S, it would be 4G capable iphone 4.

The new iphone 5 would be a complete redesign. With Samsung and Motorola rolling out completely redesigned phones that are extreamly fast, slim and sexy. A cheap iphone 4 may not be enough to woo people on the fence between android and iOS.

So why is there an A5 processor and a different battery?
