This whole naming thing though... I don't know. Just to put it this way, what do you think a good name for the 5th generation iPhone, running iOS 5 powered by an A5 chip is?

The iPhone 4S.

While i agree, they might want to stick with 4 until they can release iphone 6 (i.e. iphone4Gs). After that, though, theyll be in trouble, as there wont be any 5G, and their next model would be 7.

Well yes, that's just the problem! I think they need to divorce their naming from the 'carrier bandwidth' naming system ASAP! It just about worked for the 3GS, but doing it again is just asking for trouble.

It's also not very 'Apple' as it were. They don't go round calling their other products things like the Macbook Broadband or iPod MP3?! Feels a bit like putting "Turbo" or "Injection" after the name of a car.

Just seems a little bit naff to me!

Nah. It's a prototype iPhone 4 display,

NVM...read that wrong.

I really hope the reason we haven't seen any leaked 5 is because they're keeping it under extremely tight wraps. That they're okay with leaking 4S since it's the same design, and people already know about the A5...

I hope.

iPhone 4S / 5 = major fail

How can you call something that hasn't been announced yet major fail? Your post = major fail.

You guys are nuts, well aren't you? It's iPhone 4S with the same design (remember iPhone 3G family?) not iPhone 5 just because it has an A5 in it run by iOS 5. There is no point for Apple to ditch a design that has been living for only 1 year. So let's expect slight speed bump to the current model. Btw, how about an 8go iPhone 4 to be introduced alongside the iPhone 4S, han?

Then the next phone would be the iPhone 6 by your logic ?

iPhone 3G family ? What does 4 stand for then ?

I don't know if this has already been said or not, but the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, whatever they wanna call it, will be running iOS 5 which does not require iTunes for activation. The reason for the connect to iTunes screen is that there's no iOS loaded on the flash device.

You've all waited 16 Months not for iPhone 5 but for iOS 5. This year was all about Software rather than Hardware. iPhone is an iPhone because of iOS. And because of that, developers have put lot of their time in developing iOS 5 to perfection.
The next gen iPhone will be definitely called iPhone 4S/4GS. It will ship with iOS 5, A5 Dual-core processor, 8MP Camera, 3.5 inch retina display with 960*640 Resolution and that's it. Right now, Apple doesn't think they need to increase there screen size and also the concept designs and leaked documents showing tapered design is like going backwards to 3G era.
The iPhone 4 was, and is, better in design and ergonomics than previous models. It's really hard to bite on but all evidence points to one ugly truth that only 'a' iPhone 4S will make it to Mid Oct. Too bad I was gonna upgrade my iPhone 4 but looks like it's not gonna happen till Apple puts a 4 inch screen in it.

Why would they break the naming scheme again though after just having fixed it last year ?

No, if the next iPhone is not called iPhone 5, it's going to be called "iPhone". Just "iPhone". Either they move forward and call the 5th iPhone the iPhone 5 or they drop the ludicrous generational suffixes they don't use on other products.

Doesn't matter if it's redesigned or not, bigger screen or not, just the A5 by itself is a big upgrade. A5 + Xperia Arc camera ? Bigger upgrade. + Facetime HD front camera ? Even bigger. Plenty of stuff they can put in without changing the design itself and it still makes it more than just a "bumped" iPhone 4, just like the 3GS is much more than a "bumped" 3G.

Nope. The original iPhone was called the iPhone.

Nope. The original iPhone was called the iPhone.

That's the point. The Macbook has been the Macbook for years through multiple designs. Same for the iMac. Same for the iPod Nano, same for the iPod Touch, same for the iPod Shuffle, the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air.

The next iPhone could very well be "iPhone" and then all subsequent iPhones would be "iPhone". And nothing else.

I'm sorry, but I've never really liked the design of iphone 4 & certainly not on practical level either. You're speaking from your own personal taste.
A new model in keeping with Apple's other products in design & materials is what most of us hope for.I won't be queing up for an upgraded 4,I'll be ditching my hundreds of apps & changing to Android along with many others...
Apple are becoming the establishment,in terms of market share,& it has made them lazy & complacent. No excuse for a slightly upgraded 4 after neary 16 months...none...

We have to remember what else has gone on over the last 12 months. Steve hasn't been at work for a lot of it (i know he's still watching over from home) and i possibly think without his day to day and hands on approach the update this year (timing and design) could be really messed up. I know its not something people here (me included) would like to think about, but it is possible that without steve our "expected" updates and upgrades may not go the way we want and we may have to get used to it.

You do know that there other people who work at Apple besides Steve right???

Maybe you are right. It's shipping with iOS 5 so naming it iPhone 5 would make sense. Other than hardware upgrades, Speech-to-text is also something to look forward to which would be exclusive for i5.
Still every time, CM cases makes me think how can they be wrong in iPhone design prediction when they had been right before?? They sold iPad 2 cases right after a day it got launched(they mass produced it before iPad 2 was released!). I do hope there is a bigger screen iPhone, but I also don't want really thin tapered design.

I still don't know why most websites (with a few exceptions) think that this is actually an iPhone 4S. If it is something actually put together by Apple, it is more than likely a relatively old prototype. The main give away is the use of the front panel from the ORIGINAL (launch) white iPhone 4 with the perforated proximity sensor window above the earpiece opening. Either that or someone got their hands on an A5 chipset (if it's real) and put it together with some aftermarket replacement parts.

There will be two iPhones this year!

I don't think that it is possible for Apple to release ONLY an iPhone 4S.

I know that the Iphone 4 is still selling like hell and that it is ALL about the Software, but if the rumors about an Samsung Galaxy S3 coming to "us" in spring 2012 with a 2GHz quad-core-chip, 1,5GB RAM, 32GB, 4,65" Super-Amoled-3-Screen (1.280x1.024), NFC and a 10MP-Cam in a Metal-Body are (partly) true, then Apple will be clearly second (in specs) with the iPhone4S as well as with the iPhone5 (coming Mid 2012 !?)...

For that reason I think/hope, that we will see an "cheap" iPhone4S AND a iPhone5! The iPhone6 (Mid 2012) will then have to compete with the Galaxy S3 (Early 2012)...
