So more drilled holes on one side than the other? Is that what he's truly worried about? How often do you look at the bottom of your phone? Seriously?!?!

No, this is bad design taste - if you are ever studied design. No matter what (architectural, machinery etc.) teacher always will ask you for what reason you make this, this and this!

In this flooded sample there are no reason for asymetric design for holes - it looks like designer was starter in designing and have no taste at all.
Holes are brutal!

May i ask you?
Why Apple designing nice back for all devices - even if you not see back side of your new MacBook Pro Retina (even air holes are designed so simple and well?) - this is not the part of device, the question is all device (make perfect everything)

if you ask about asymetric and say that these big brutal holes with headphone jack without reason on the back are OK, then you are 12 year old teenager who don't care about design! you somewhere see advertisement with Apple and you need only logo, no matter about Apple message.

Apple message are "innovations in design and technology"

Sorry! But this rumored design is nothing to do with. :D
This is speculations to push up some tech sites ratings and this is it!

And finally - it will be strange if Apple in design quality going backwards isn't it? Ask yourself ;) :apple:

honestly the bottom feels balanced to me, having the larger hole on the once side you need to balance the ascetic by adding more to the other side of the dock connector.

This new iPhone "5" looks just like the iPhone 4 would look if

  • It were taller, with a different aspect ratio screen
  • It had a two-tone metal back instead of glass
  • It had unibody construction
  • The sim card slot were smaller
  • The dock connector were smaller and radically redesigned
  • The headphone jack were moved from top to bottom
  • It had re-designed speaker grilles
  • It had a smaller home button
I know that I and other discerning individuals will be able to tell the new iPhone from the 4 and 4s with a cursory glance. But what about people of slightly below-average intelligence? They'll think it looks like the same phone! Why isn't Apple catering to the needs of the mentally challenged, by making it a flip-phone, or some other radically different design? Doesn't Apple care about the slow-witted?

You forgot slimmer;)

To say there is no reason is to ignore the obvious. One side has a microphone which requires fewer holes AND a headphone jack that takes up space. The other side has a speaker....to remove holes just to make it match the side with a mic and headphone jack would just be dumb.

Edit: Thinking over this, something tells me you are currently in design school....in the early years. Perhaps you have some big lessons to learn yet. Kind of like the newbie photographer that gets all hung up on what gear someone is using before they get experienced and reailze that the photographer's ability and what they can do with that gear is more important that the gear itself. The fact that you are questioning Jonathan Ive's designs....sorry, but just doesn't work for me. The design is beautiful as it is and the form follows the function....as it should.

This post made me lol. :D

This looks like a slightly taller iPhone4 with a metal kinda teardrop back casing....remind you of anything?

Yeah, and that's what makes it so beautiful!

----------

What the new iPhone should have been.

Yep, and I would've had the money laid out already!

----------

So I have this loaded up and ready to use come September 13th.

It's "wouldn't have", not "wouldn't of"

you're*

LOL!

If that reasonably attractive, but essentially void of core concept design appeals to you there's a very easy thing you can do - buy it!

I possibly will... and so will possibly many others.

Oh yeah, that screen is 16:9 ratio BTW. Funny how often taller screens crop up on designs people are saying they much prefer to the 'weird' new iPhone design.

The screen may be 16:9 [on the ativ s].. but it is LARGER. I'll say it again LARGER. That is what many people are waiting for in the apple product. I am one of them. The usefulness of an extra row of icons beggars belief. The natural tendency is for all computing devices to gain more usable screen real-estate. <- USABLE real-estate.

People fear change though I suppose...

Hehe. Oh the irony... a significant change in the screen is what a lot of people seem to be wanting.

That is what many people are waiting for in the apple product. I am one of them.

And many people are not wanting a larger screen. I am one of them.

I don't know if this is Apple's attempt at a compromise or what. Guess we'll see what they same on the 12th.

Yeah, I don’t need a larger screen and am concerned about the affect a larger screen will have on the form factor. But it won’t keep me from getting one, just for LTE.

No i graduated 20 years ago. In this time i work over almost 10 years in biggest TV stations in europe as graphic and motion designer, Live video engineer!

This is not storry about me, i just want to point that this rumor is worse with bad taste! ;)

lets make next MacBook pro with assymetric speakers, with bigger holes and speaker input on top - somewhere near "Enter" key! :)

(Remember Apple cares not about design externally but internally too. :)

so you like qiuck and bad designs? or you just try to be best at comments? :)
don't take it close to heart, i'm not bad guy - i like to look at things from logic side.

This is the type of mentality that apple is falling under. That nobody is infallible. This is exactly why apple will fall. Let's all suck up and admit that these phone looks outdated and just plain simply odd..

Please tell me how do the phones look "outdated"? Because it simply doesn't take on a radical change every generation? You have to consider cost of parts, manufacturing, and finding up-to-date and current hardware available to fit in an external design that works. Please, its people with your mentality that don't understand the basis of simple engineering.

So you're saying it's not real or you're saying you have better taste than J.Ives?

Either way, looks great to me. As a photographer, symmetry is often boring.

That explains it.

There is nothing logical about making a speaker port the same size as a microphone port.

I think it looks like a more modern version of the traditional iPhone 4/4S design and I like it. It's a natural progression and it's what I expected from Apple, they generally stick to their design philosophy.

And we all know the people bitching about it will end up buying it anyway.

Where i say that i have better taste than J.Ives?
...But maybe yes, i'm not bad designer at all - if this will be true i will lose my job immediately!

Function has the same importance as design! (But imagine how you would mess up with headphone jack on back side - unpractical.)

There is nothing logical about making a speaker port the same size as a microphone port.

Hmm, that means that iPhone 4, 4s "are not designed in logical way?" ;)

Guys, you are awesome :D
seeing some factory prototyped iPhone5 case and falling in love by rubbish design! We here not talking about personality, but about design quality.
Are you truly believe that this is an Apple way? i don't think so...!

----------

By the way this is direct message to me from Apple.

"Thank you for your interest in Apple products. The Host team, like you, are excited to see what kinds of products Apple will be releasing in the future, however speculation or rumors are against Apple and was speculative in nature.

We hope that you enjoy your new purchase (when it happens)"

I agree with you whole heartedly, as a designer/photographer I understand the rule of thirds and balance. the speaker/mic and headphone jack make a nice balance of visual weight. I'm sure these photos don't do the phone the justice holding it hand will do

Apple would never make a 2-tone back, it's so unApple, Steve would never allow it!

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

You imply it by saying this J.Ives design is rubbish. I'll just be the one to inform you that you're mistaken.

The only thing I can think of that would solve the issue you feel is there in the way you describe it is to make the grill for the speaker smaller, but that would harm the function so there's no way they'll do that. And I'm sure they won't make a major change like move the headphone jack.....so there are no options to fix this "issue" you've pointed out. This will be the final design. (they might change the type of grill, but anything they put there will be asymmetrical due to function)

Well, based on your newbie status, you may not have been around for the fun in other parts leaks, but I can assure you that this is most likely going to be what is announced on stage. If you think it's rubbish now, I guess you won't want to buy one when they are released.

Just wait and see what Apple will release ;)

Hope on release day you will remember our discussion. :)

Hah :D you need work at TV or be president who represent information in wrong way! ;)

My otiginal text was: "this design is rubbish."
Without "J.Ives"

You did call it rubbish. And even if it's a prototype, J.Ives would have been involved in the design. So what exactly did I misrepresent?

You seem to have a weak grasp of the reality staring you in the face with its asymmetrical grills smiling at you. This leak is not some fake part made by a Chinese knock-off shop. This is an Apple designed part that will most likely be the final design. When parts like these leaked in the past, we've only seen minor changes such as screws being added.

Did J.Ives personally told to you that this design is from him?
Or you are J.Ives brother who cares about him so mutch that you are crying now about my posts? :)

Stay cool, rest and relax man. Don't panic :)
