But the Android fans here keep telling us how much more innovative Android handset makers are than Apple!

Android Model 1: Meh
Android Model 2: Bigger screen
Android Model 3: Even bigger screen
Android Model 4: WAY BIGGER SCREEN!!!

But you forget all the failed form factors like slide out keyboards, dual screens, blackberry style with physical keyboard below screen, the flip around ones with tiny screens etc.

In the end though they seem to be converging on huge screen, no buttons, and all candy-bar form. We just had the privilege of seeing their "beta" test products in the market as well...

Strange how it looks the same width here, but other earlier photos of the bottom make it look a bit wider. Maybe this is just the front panel and the sides come out further?

EDIT: On closer inspection, the iPhone 5 here looks like a render in this pic. The home button is smaller than the one on the iPhone 4 to the left. So, unless they re-designed the home button to be smaller this generation, the 5 will be both taller and wider than it appears here.

It's been known for a long time that the home button is smaller. The areas surrounding the top speaker and home buttons were shrunk so it makes sense to keep the front looking proportional.

This picture looks really nice compared to previous designs. The taller design is growing on me, and quickly.

Unless Apple introduce some seriously interesting hardware or new features, I just cannot see myself upgrading this year.

I feel the same way, but about next year's iPhone. I felt that way about last year's, too. This one I'm probably going to get, because when I add last year's features to the likely features of the iPhone "5", it's worth it to me.

Calling it "the next iPhone" or "the new iPhone" would just be too hard, I guess? It's asinine.

You seem to have forgotten about "the new iPad."

I don't think people typically count from "3G" to "4". However, they do count the number of iPhones... this will be iPhone 6.

I agree. Also, there is another reason it won't be called "iPhone 5" aside from the fact that Apple seems to be moving away from the version number being in the name. It won't be called "iPhone 5" because it's the SIXTH generation iPhone. Therefore, even if they keep the version number in the name it'll be "iPhone 6". I can't believe how many people forget this.

Thank you for making me re-quote the post below once again.

This is for all the stupid idiots that don’t know how the real world works.

2007 iphone named: iphone (because it’s a cool name)

2008 iphone named: iphone 3G (because of the 3G speed)

2009 iphone named: iphone 3Gs (because of the extra speed for the 3G)

2010 iphone named: iphone 4 (because it would be dumb to call it iphone 5,6,7,8 or anything else.)

2011 iphone named: iphone 4s (because every two years they like to add a “s” for speed and calling it 5 would be retarded when it looks the same. It also allows them to sell a crap load of new phones with very little changed.)

2012 iphone named: iphone 5 (because that is the name. If you ignore the dam “generation” and how many phones there were. And if you look at the world outside your nerd house; you will notice that EVERYONE else in the REAL world is waiting for the iphone 5. It will just confuse to many people and make even less sence to call it anything else. READ EXAMPLES)

The generation argument is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard.

Generation Example:
2012: iphone 6
2013: iphone 6s
2014: iphone 8
2015: iphone 8s
2016: iphone 10
2017: iphone 10s

Makes sense Example:
2012: iphone 5
2013: iphone 5s
2014: iphone 6
2015: iphone 6s
2016: iphone 7
2017: iphone 7s

Nerd speak “well you can’t call the 2016 iphone 7 because it’s the 10th phone”

DUMBASSES!!

What lovely music.

~considers purchase~

That's what I thought. What a delightful soundtrack!

We can now be 99.9% certain that the new iPhone will have a 16:9 ratio screen. The increasing waves of bleating cretins who keep moaning about the fact need to try to be quiet as they bring literally nothing to the discussion.

Until we know what's inside the phone such as CPU, NFC, RAM, fingerprint recognition etc. stating that Apple have "failed to innovate" based ONLY on screen resolution seems incredibly ill-judged.

And just regarding the look of the thing, I can literally not understand how the move to a CNC machined unibody case which is taller and slimmer with a new screen ratio is less of a design shift than from 3GS to iPhone 4??

new iPhone size

What a shame and a crime. Very minimal size increase with the new iPhone. Length does not increase or give any gain to the small print that I already have on the 4s. We just get a little more small print. Very disappointing.:(

There is an old saying about how you use something being more important than size. Hardware is great, but I believe most of the innovation we are going to see from here on out (at least until another major revolution in mobile miniaturization) will be software-related (I.E. Passbook, Maps, Siri).

Sorry nothing new at all, LTE maybe (big whop) and they moved the headphone jack and camera

Fail on the Screen Size

Fail on the same OS from 2007 largely copied from Windows Mobile 6.5

Looking forward to Windows Phone 8 and the Deeper integration.

iPhone was ok for a while but its just falling behind so quick I gotta look at something new and "Think Different" ;)

Personally if the next 5 iPhones looked exactly like the 4 and 4s but with better internals, I'd buy them. I really don't buy this arguement that Apple has to change the form ever, much less every two years

We've already had this look for 2 years. If you get it on contract this year you're gonna be stuck with it for an additional 2 years.

So that would be 4 years and thousands of dollars spent on the same phone

----------

If all you care about is looks, fine. Most of us actually judge a phone by how it works, not just superficially on its outer dimensions and color.

What is new about how it will work?

What? cause it looks the same it's the same phone? Nevermind it being faster, having a better camera, having more functions (whether Apple purposely crippled the old phone is besides the point, the point is you can't do that with the old phone regardless), having more storage space (at least from the 4)... it looks the same so it's the same phone.

Really?

I guess if I write a book and put on a cover and put that out but then later decide to add some very useful chapters that add more info that lets you do more things with it that I didn't cover on the first book but kept the same cover it's the same book by your definition. Might as well just buy the first book.

I wanna love you iphone 5, but I just can't.

Have a look at the Samsung ATIV S Win 8 phone...

This looks like an object of desire:

Apple used to make objects of desire - I'm not so sure anymore.
The next iphone - is certainly not an object of desire in my opinion, and I've been waiting so long since my 4 for something to come out.

There is a big possibility I'll dump my iphone despite having investment in the iOS ecosystem when my contract is up in Nov.

Now I know what some of you are thinking, but I'll be willing to bet there's a lot of you out there licking your lips over this.

.

"So much for doubling-down on secrecy"

"Steve would've never allowed this!"

"Safari seems snappier!"

"It won't be called 'iPhone 5'!!!!11111SHIFT+1"

That pretty much covers the usual, right? Carry on with real discussion.

Apparently people are still able to come up with more complaints. -_-

iM SURE THIS ONE PRETTY MUCH KILLED ALL OF THAT.

BY THE WAY THIS PHONE SUCKS

This post made me lol. :D

This looks like a slightly taller iPhone4 with a metal kinda teardrop back casing....remind you of anything?

Even though there's bound to be quite a lot of people who dislike the height, i think it looks pretty cool. Excited!
Great for people with long heads.
The other photo was just a perspective issue. The bottom of one was closer to the camera than the other.
I'm pretty sure something more than perspective is going on in this picture.

Well, it's all a matter of taste which is very subjective. Something about the front of that phone looks old and outdated. The back is nothing special except maybe the little vented area. Truthfully, I really prefer the unibody case leaks we've been seeing.
