I'm sure you do not have the update yet. Plex is rolling it out over time.
Then you'd be wrong because I manually checked for updates in the app store and it said "Welcome to our newly reimagined and redesigned Plex app..."

Client Version: 2025.10.2 (981) for iPadOS and iOS.

nope, you had to pay to unlock the app regardless of local or remote.
you now have to pay to enable remote streaming if you don't have a plex pass.

depending on what device you were watching on. the iOS apps were paid. however a lot of tvs came with app built in and the PS5 app and im sure the firestick app were always free.

Ive had plex for a decade, to stream from my Mac to my tv. never cost me a penny and delivered so much. the remote streaming being removed from free and the impending price hike made me pay for the lifetime at €120. id already had far more value in the years id used it. The pushing of live tv really annoys me, but I can put up with it. tried Jellyfin expecting to switch and it didnt grab me. little things like having to select my firestick to use the app there rather than going straight for the tv's built in plex app. the way it couldn't figure out that separate episodes in a folder were the same series. the way it advertised free downloading (a reason to change I thought) but the only apps that worked with it were paid.

we are talking about the iOS app.
however the original android versions of the app also required an in-app purchase to unlock playback (exempt if you had plex pass). the apps were always free to download, but were limited to 1 minute playback unless you either paid to unlock or had plex pass.

the new app has done a sort of switcheroo, where local playback is now free, but you either need plex pass or pay a monthly fee to allow remote streaming.

Fortunately, about 95% of my Plex usage is through the Plex app on Apple TV. I suppose they will get around to updating that app too but for now, it's business as usual.

I only use Plex on my iPad/iPhone when I travel so my usage is understandably different than those who only watch Plex on a mobile device.
I have the TestFlight new experience version on Apple TV….. and it’s just as bad. Laughably so.

Well done Plex for doing a Sonos.

the first change they mention is wrong.
it doesn't remove the live tv button from the app even if you have it disabled on the server.
yeah that setting worked with the previous version of the app. the new one ignore it and always display that icon, wasting space.

Color me shocked that a software update would ever upset users.... maybe they hate change?
Yes, we hate changes when they’re bad. I updated and now I can’t stream locally without being logged in to plex.tv on my iPad. I know how that might be good for Plex (all the better to monetize you, my dearie), but why should I be ecstatic about that change? At least I’m finally motivated to try jellyfin.

Back on Plex yet?

Jellyfin is perpetually unfinished. Has no AppleTV app (coming soon supposedly) and I ran back to Plex fast.
Me too. I tried Jellyfin on my QNAP NAS and while I like some stuff (plugins, theming, etc), it’s painfully slow and literally kills my NAS’s CPU, while Plex works like a breeze.
So, for now, I’ll stick with Plex server and Infuse (via direct mode) as player.
