Trust me, Sony and Samsung don't want to be giving away their TVs, the market has forced them to. If Apple came to market with a 4K TV prior to the race to the bottom it will be bad for customers but great for Apple. If Apple comes in after the price wars on 4K sets they are screwed in the market.

their prices have been pretty fair though.. to some point, and they're not "giving them away". as new tech components become more common, along with less R&D.. their prices go down and they just adjust to it. with the exception of the playstation devices, sony makes their profit even with the decrease in price.. due to the component prices going down. and honestly.. i don't care about how great it would be for apple. i don't want them to further mark up the prices of the tv market in the beginning stages of new tech. you said it yourself.. why would you want the tv market be bad for customers? and the tv market is different than the ones apple is currently in. if apple decides to charge their mark up.. as a newcomer.. it wouldn't help them compete, because customers would just go to the veterans like samsung and sony.. even lg.

Why? It wasn't defective within the warranty period.

Actually I used it plenty. When it's fully charged, unplug it.

Seriously? Why? These batteries are rated to 1000 cycles. Yours has been cycled about 10% of what it's rated and has lost over 90% of its capacity. Mine has cycled almost 3x what yours has and has lost only 7% of it's capacity. A defect like that would have shown up in the first year unless you did something like leave it in extreme heat which can kill your batteries life.

All well and good - we got faster Macbooks. But, Apple still hasn't done squat in terms of introducing any new products since Steve Jobs passed. They're just drifting along aimlessly just like they did the first time after Jobs left.

Newsflash, the iPod wasn't the first MP3 player, the iPhone wasn't the first smartphone, and the iPad wasn't the first tablet.

While all were revolutionary products, they weren't "new" things in and of themselves. They were new ways of doing things that already existed. The retina notebooks aren't the first notebooks, but you can't deny they break entirely new grounds for a consumer product.

And I'm sorry, but have you seen the Mac Pro? The thing looks like something straight out of a science fiction movie, but it's real, and extremely powerful.

When other companies manage to keep pace with Apple in terms of leading innovation in computing, I'll be concerned. As of now though, Apple is WAY ahead.

I know, really, what a failure. If Apple doesn't release a new product every week for the next 10 years I'm going to be so angry with them! I'll go and post everywhere that they don't innovate anywhere near as much as.... Samsung!

Im in this camp too, although unlike all my rMBP friends (most of whom have 2012 edition) Im not overly happy with my machine. You know when you get a computer every so often that just seems slightly cursed? Everyone else says theres doesn't miss a beat, never jerks, doesn't slow down. Mine gets to a point after a period of being booted where its 16gb of ram have gone, its using a 10gb swap file and its beach balling, especially in Safari.

Now I do multi-task hard but I'm not hitting those CPU's overly hard and my iMac takes everything I throw at it silky smooth, including multiple VMwares - all I have to do is run the iPhone sim on here and the computer is crying. So either I expect too much (my iMac is 2011 and scores slightly less in geek bench) or this machine is a touch of a dud.

So with the A/C wifi, the improved battery, Thunderbolt 2 and most importantly getting rid of the Intel 4000 which I don't think was ever capable of moving retina pixels I was ready to take a hundred quid hit and upgrade, but like you Mavericks on initial inspection seems to have sorted a lot out, especially the smoothness and animation side of things. I can now jump into mission control at any time it seems and it animates properly rather than at 2 frames per second!

I think getting a retina without the discrete GPU is a mistake. It makes a heck of a difference, especially if you use multiple displays often.

dude, you should have taken that in a while ago. If you get below something like 80% in 2-3 years, apple will replace the battery. It's not a STATED policy, but it has been done many times.

also: why are there no 64 bit results yet, is everyone posting to geekbench too cheap to buy geekbench?

Not sure how I could get it replaced; there isn't a store near me, and Apple won't send you a battery to let yourself install it, even though I'm more than capable of performing the installation. :(

I agree. Apple started this innovation, but the surprise factor is dwindling, the upgrades are almost always suppressed comparatively to samsungs all out to give you all the goodies and more each time.

I notice Steve jobs did a better 'job' , mr cook is not cutting it

They collect it off you and repair.

Where does that leave us folks who can not use a 15" as a portable due to size and have super built, SSD driven, high ram, high spec'd video card 28+TB, multi-display monster Mac Pro's at home?

Right where we need to be in getting a top of the line 13" I am betting...

2010 MacBook Pro here

The discrete GPU absolutely murders my battery life.

Open MS Office, Chrome, System Preferences, Firefox, or pretty much anything else kicks in the NVidia GPU.

I get about ~3 hours of battery life.

I'm going with Intel-only next time. I'm happy to see the *high-end* Retina MacBook Pro can be purchased without an NVidia chipset!

Can't you just set the preferences to not use the dGPU? I am still using a 2008 MBP (the unibody) and have to log-out/log-in in order to run the dGPU. But, there is a power saving feature, does that not keep the dGPU off?

If you were considering a Macbook Air in the first place you weren't going to buy a Macbook Pro.

Not necessarily. I was a long-time MacBook Air user and purchased a 13" rMBP last year. If a Retina Air comes out in the future I might consider it again.

What? Did you complete ignore the introduction of the Retina Macbook Pro only last year? Madness.

It's a "newbie" so perhaps was a trolling message. In any case, Apple spent a lot of time on the Mac yesterday. I think they expect the mini to sell whatever short supply they have (hence the higher price), and the rebranding and redesign of the iPad Air should breathe new life into that product.

I get the sense that they want to make a big push for Macs this holiday. Offering a $1299 model is a good lure. Granted, it's a 4GB model and not a great value considering that $1499 gets twice the RAM and SSD, but it, relatively speaking, is priced to sell in larger quantities than before. It is no longer a "niche" product.

I just cancelled my 13" 2.4GHz and reordered the 2.6GHz. For a roughly 14% increase it seems worthwhile. The 2.6 - 2.8 is only a 3.5% increase however.

It is a synthetic multithreaded benchmark. The 13" has two cores while the 15" has four.

The difference in real world applications is obviously much, much smaller.

FINALLY someone with some sense. Synthetic benchmarks will often over inflate the score of things like core i7s vs i5s, just because of hyper threading even when the i7 is only 10-20% faster in real world use.

----------

I wonder why the single core benchmarks are higher on the 15" when comparing i7 vs i7 when the clock on the 13" is higher

The Turbo boost speeds must be different, and the quad probably has a bigger L3 Cache.

New MacBook Pro CPU options

I was hoping for a 4K 17" MBP, but will settle for the 15" with discreet graphics.
Thinking about the CPU upgrade, but a bit concerned by a number of missing features. Maybe Intel's chart has multiple mistakes?

Check out the third and sixth sections of this Intel CPU comparison: Intel CrystalWell i7 4850 vs 4960

Maybe I'll just get the 2.3 GHz 15" MBP unless someone can explain why these five "missing features" on the 2.6 GHz processor are unimportant.
Installed Mavericks with no problems on my 2009 MacBook Pro. Looking forward to a new Mac Pro with a 4K Thunderbolt 2 display.

Great! These benchmarks came at the right time. Looks like im in on a 15'' model. Still undecided which options should I settle on. Either way, a major upgrade from my current early 2008 MBP. RIP, you've served me well.

After spending nearly $3,000 for my first ever MBP in 2010, I just bought a refurbed Feb 2013 model for half the price. I think these benchmarks hopefully revealed that I made a decent decision. It just isn't worth it to me to spend $1,000 extra for one hour more of battery life and a 10% improvement in speed.

Depends on what you do, for internet surfing no, but for 'real world' apps like photo editing and especially video editing, the Quad is literally twice as fast in many duties.

were not gonna see a retina air in a "While"

i think you'll see them far sooner than that. now that all the ipads are retina capable there really isn't much reason not to do the air next. apple will lick the battery issue soon enough. you won't get 14 hours, but you'll get prettier graphics.
