Your $849 iPhone does a lot more than Siri.
I'm its babysitter. Getting tired of it. Can't export photos--photo bursts have corrupted meta-data from reusing file name used for other photos (not sure how this happened). Image Capture failed to import as did Photos app on Mac. AppleCare couldn't figure it out. I finally did by having to import batches of images at a time with over 10,000 images/videos. Can't make a full back-up of the phone. Every time it goes for two hours and looks just fine and like it will finish and then says the phone was disconnected and back up failed, even though it's the exact same it was the entire time. Can't export my health data. It just doesn't work. I turned off auto-lock and the phone will try for hours and finally say it failed. Been trying to accomplish these tasks for months because of problems with the phone (dropped calls, crackly calls, the phone freezing) that Apple says require reinstalling the OS. So Im basically supposed to erase the phone to make it work better, but in a multitude of ways I can't get my stuff off of it first. It's a continual weekend project.

So yes it does more than just Siri, but I'm not happy with it right now. I don't want to lose my settings and esp don't want to lose my Health data so I'm in a quagmire.

Also I would imagine the iPhone 7 has a much more powerful processor than the Echo Dot. And even on my iPhone 7 using the Google App I am much better understood than using Siri--Siri is more convenient though because of the integration.

How about getting Siri to do some basic things first??
A) You’re complaining about Apple adding cool functionality?
B) Siri does stuff that’s way beyond basic already. I use Siri 20 times a day. Of course it can always get better, and I’m always excited when it does. But I am extremely happy that it deciphers and performs most of its functions using the chip in my device, not the cloud, for a much more private and secure experience that Alexa or Google Asst.

What is the “basic” stuff do you think Siri should do that it doesn’t do now?

Just tried it—very cool! Also like that Siri doesn’t read it to you. I like/trust the NPR lady. Creeps me out when Alexa reads news stuff. Makes it seem like Amazon is somehow filtering the content and editorializing what you get.

Try imazing and see what it says. Also, try starting a new backup from scratch. Put the phone in airplane amd low power modes. Then, using imazing to select the minimum set of stuff you want to keep and have it reinstall iOS.

Thanks, never heard of this before. Will try it.

Only way I'm using Siri is setting timers, checking schedule, taking reminders, or doing basic unit conversions. Anything beyond these basically ends up as a Google search.

Just tried this in the UK and it works - news summary from BBC Radio 5, Sky News or LBC, as advertised. Useful feature.

Only with Apple would this be OS-specific. Devices that can't update to iOS 11 like iPhone 5 and 5c should have no problem playing back a podcast.

I got a $29 Echo Dot at Christmas-time and it has made me less and less impressed with my $849 iPhone 7's Siri functionality. Just today I asked Alexa how much caffeine is in a 12 oz Coke. She knew immediately. Siri did a web search.

Totally agree, I was using a 6s plus with my AirPods (best Apple product) and recently upgraded to a Pixel 2. Google assistant is on another level and find myself using it loads. Friends and family all like the Amazon devices as well. Siri in my experience has been pretty poor, I felt I gave it a good go, trying to learn what specific phrases work best and which apps work with it but the experience was very unApple and feels like it’s not much better than when it launched. Hope Apple improves it and doesn’t leave it behind.

Honestly, I think a clean install of iOS will fix your iPhone 7. It seems like something got corrupted in iOS and it is causing all sorts of issues for you. Do you have AppleCare on it still? If so, and the clean install of iOS does not fix your iPhone, I would take it into an Apple Store and have it swapped out. Sometimes even if you are past your warranty date Apple will swap out the phone. Use the "Files" app...it is your friend, send all your pictures and anything else you want to save to the Cloud in "Files." Do you have a Mac? If so you can AirDrop files to your Mac and also get into your iCloud Drive and make sure everything got the cloud. If you do a clean install, I would put the iPhone into recovery mode (plugged into iTunes) and reinstall that way. Good luck, if you need help just reply to me on here.

There's app I developed called Caffeine++ which does this and helps to log your drink into Health. Not with Siri though.

Please charge that poor phone. The 3% battery is giving me anxiety simply by looking at it.
Or they could use Altershot to crop off the Status Bar.

Does not work in the Netherlands... well no surprise there

(Netherlands) Asking Siri for the news of today I get two Google search results, the meaning of the word "news" and the meaning of the word "today". Absolutely useless.

I’ve tested this feature this morning on my iPhone, it’s pretty good I could definitely see me using it on the HomePod more tho (when Apple, actually decide to release it that is). I’m wondering if the release of this feature is an indication that the HomePod will be released soon? or I’m reading too much into it :(

I like it as well, nice to use when you first wake up to get the headlines. I think HomePod will be coming out soon. They said early 2018, didn't they? So that would be February at the latest I would think! I want the HomePod, I think, haha.

Edit: Also really nice to use with AirPods.

Yea i think it will be nice feature on the HomePod to say "Hey Siri, what's the news today" either in the morning and or when going to bed. I think it will release soon as well, i've just seen this news from 9to5 Mac, if it's true then i think the HomePod release date will get announced soon.

That is great! How much did they say the HomePod is, or did they not release a price yet? I thought it was like $400 or so?

The HomePod will be $349 i'm not sure what the price will be in other countries tho, for example i'm in the UK and i'm not sure what the price will be, probably £349 i'm guessing.

I have it on good authority that the news source is NPR by default, but can actually be switched to a source of your liking (Fox, perhaps?).

This is classified information, not mentioned in the article anywhere, so don't tell anyone.

Cannot switch to NPR from UK though. Only choice it gives me is Sky News as an alternative to BBC.
