Lets just face reality. Siri was a good attempt at first but got leapfrogged by the competition years ago. Every progress is still progress but it’s like their attempts with maps, iCloud, hardware. The competition is making more progress. Apple has lost on voice and should implement Alexa to stay relevant.

Same with MacBook Air. 10 years ago it was amazing but when you neglect it for 10 years, competition will catch up. Same with Apple TV, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro and even the newly introduced iMac.

Ive has been too busy decoration the new Apple campus, Tim too busy with politics and finding new ways to squeeze more money out of loyal customers, Phil too busy rehearsing old victories, federighi too busy squashing bugs and scrambling to keep up with competitors, Eddy too busy talking and drinking with Hollywood stars.

People are complaining about the stability of OS X and iOS and demanding for incremental stable updates each year. But be honest... those past updates were incremental updates already and are only playing catchup to what the competition already has to offer.

Maybe Apple has been working secretly behind the curtains at the next great thing. And I’m really hoping they do. Because I can’t imagine that a company that big, with so much money on the bank, is releasing so little with so little progress the last couple of years. It’s almost shameful.

iTunes used to be the standard for music. It’s lost to Spotify.
The Mac used to be de facto standard for creatives and moviemaking. It’s lost to Windows, Adobe and HP
Apple used to be de facto standard in education. Google and MS took that crown.
iPhone, although nice, has gotten too pricey and the competition is already ahead of them in many ways.

Apple is targeting novice users, the tech dummies who care less about money these days. There isn’t any roadmap, there is too less progress and in my eyes it’s has gotten a complete mess in all the key areas they once excelled.

Mobile congress in Barcelona is around the corner and will put even the iPhone X to shame.

Unless a miracle happens, for me, Apple already lost by greed and neglect.

Yea i think it will be nice feature on the HomePod to say "Hey Siri, what's the news today" either in the morning and or when going to bed. I think it will release soon as well, i've just seen this news from 9to5 Mac, if it's true then i think the HomePod release date will get announced soon.

https://9to5mac.com/2018/01/17/report-inventec-shipping-first-1-million-homepod/
I think the echo dot and google home will be offering the same even before Apple’s HomePod will see the light of day. It’s a feature that can also be accomplished by a $ 30 dollar device and you don’t need a $ 400 HomePod for.

"Hey Siri whats the news?"
"Sorry there is no music on news"

"Hey siri whats the news?"
"Sure I can schedule that appointment called appointment"
Sounds like you’re doing something wrong... not to sound presumptuous, but if you actually try and use it instead of mocking the feature it works fantasticly.

How about getting Siri to do some basic things first??

How about getting to know what you’re talking about?

The Google Home and Echo already can, and that’s awesome! Competition is great, but this article is about making Siri better - a mantra people keep chanting but seem to mock when progress is announced.

I couldn't respectfully disagree more, has Apple made mistakes? of course they have, you would have to be blind in order to not see that however they have some really great products such as the Apple Watch, the iPhone is still a great device (i love my iPhone X Face ID is brilliant to use and so seamless it's typical Apple) and AirPods are also another great product.

There seems to be a missconception that under Steve Jobs Apple didn't make mistakes and it's wrong because they did, while Steve was a great manager and great for Apple he wasn't the one making the products (it was often Johny Ive who designed them). The MacBook Air hasn't been updated because the MacBook is set to replace it when prices drop. For me the Mac is still a far better computer and OS than Windows, you say creatives are leaving the Mac? i personally don't see that and i work within the creative industry, most people (depending on their jobs within the industry) use different Mac's, most editors for example that i've met use MacBook Pro's or an iMac in order to edit in Final Cut Pro X a software programme that a lot of editors prefer to use over Adobe Premier Pro.

Personally i don't count Apple out of anything, there may be great speakers out there at the moment but the HomePod hasn't released yet it may very well be a much better sounding speaker. Only time will tell.

Only with Apple would this be OS-specific. Devices that can't update to iOS 11 like iPhone 5 and 5c should have no problem playing back a podcast.

I got a $29 Echo Dot at Christmas-time and it has made me less and less impressed with my $849 iPhone 7's Siri functionality. Just today I asked Alexa how much caffeine is in a 12 oz Coke. She knew immediately. Siri did a web search.

Usually queries for that will go through Wolfram Alpha. This was even featured in some of the early Siri ads where I think someone asked "How many calories in a bagel"

Thats my point, having to learn how to use with specific wording it needs is not at all useful Every other one of these work fine it's just siri that's so inflexible.

“Hey Siri, what’s the news today?” (from the BBC by default).
“Hey Siri, what’s the news today from Sky?”
I find that pretty straightforward.

It worked for me, but how do I make it stop? Can it be done by voice command?

Apple still has a long way to go, I was given a google home assistant as gift, thinking I would never use it, but it is amazing what you can ask it compared to Siri, f.ex., I can ask it to play local radio stations by just asking it to play "kpft" or "88.7".

Siri doesn’t need specific wording, sure you have to have a grasp of what you can ask... but that’s any AI or Personal Assistant. It’s not that hard, people need to stop blaming it for their impatience or incompetence. Siri is not perfect, but it’s more competitive than people realize.

What's the fake news for today? lol Poor apple keeps marching backwards with sorry Siri.

If you say so. I use Google assistant and have no issues scheduling a basic calendar appointment. I try the same with siri and i end up getting so weird thing inserted into my calendar (usually called appointment). siri requires me to remember to use specific phrases and words (that I never remember), it is basically voice activated actions.

We're also getting the ability to disable phone auto-lock during phone calls. No more tapping the screen every minute during conference calls!

Ok, i'm still dreaming that they'll add that in the next iOS release.

Works for me with the phrase ‘listen to the news’ on both iPhone and Apple TV 4. Save me loading up iPlayer on the atv4 and finding then live news channel.
