...CandyCrush doesn’t exactly provide a Horizon Zero Dawn experience.
No one here has argued otherwise.

And there are very many customers who aren't interested in a "Horizon Zero Dawn experience."

Guessing it would have both. You need IR for most TV’s but the ATV works off of BT.
It does have both, just like the current Siri remote has:

But the current Siri Remote only offers the option of IR for controlling volume (on older TVs, soundbars, AV receivers, etc. that might not support CEC.) It cannot turn TVs on/off by IR as well.

Now that the new Siri Remote has a dedicated power button, my guess is that it finally supports both IR as well as CEC, for powering TVs on and off as well as controlling volume. And that this change won't make it to the original Siri Remote, even though it's software-based. We'll need the new one for that to work. Just a guess though.

A casual/serious gamer distinction is useless in this context. Gaming interest is orthogonal to rendering technology.
Apple had the opportunity to strengthen the AppleTV in terms of rendering performance, inviting a broader scope of what could be offered, both as original content and ports.
They didn’t. Whether you’re fine with this or not, it does say something about where Apple doesn’t care to go with the AppleTV.

Personally, I find this an opportunity lost for no apparent good reason. The new chip and RAM solution is cheaper, improving margins, but the difference can’t be much to write home about compared to the cost of the ATV.

Pairing new Siri remote 2021.
I know this is a little ahead of time since orders start on April 30. When I get the new Siri remote how do I pair it with my old Apple TV 4K? I am wondering what settings I go to in Apple TV 4k to switch from the black old Siri remote to the new Siri Remote 2021?

New Siri Remote 2021 Turn on/off Projector and AVR
Does anyone know how the IR setup for the new Siri Remote will work for the On/Off button for those that cannot use HDMI CEC?
For example my Sony Projector needs IR Off twice in a row to turn off, and the AVR need IR off once. So will the new Siri Remote allow 3 IR commands for Off and 2 IR commands for On to be sent when the on/off button is pressed?

I believe I saw this option in settings under remote once. Sorry I already got rid of mine (in anticipation for a new release). But this shouldn’t be a problem. The guide will be enclosed with the new remote.

And those people are not serious gamers. They are casual gamers.

And in other news, water is wet. You’re completely missing the point. Apple isn’t marketing the AppleTV (or any of their products, ever) to “serious gamers.”

😂 You have your view as to what you think a gaming platform should be and I have mine. I prefer to play games that are slightly more advanced than drawing a line through three diamonds to make them explode. You are cool with that.

I think Apple is missing a huge opportunity. You don’t. Either way they keep making money and my stock continues to do well for now. I would like them to make even more with a real gaming platform, but that doesn’t look like it‘s going to happen any time soon.

What catches my eye is the mute button. I should have returned the atv 4K when I realized Apple didn’t think remotes needed mute function. I don’t game; use it for streaming. Ask Siri to mute and she tells you the remote has volume controls. If only there was a software update that facilitated muting. Instead when I want to mute I have to use the tv or soundbar remote. The Siri remote is not all that & lacking mute makes it downright irritating. Now that the new Siri remote has mute, I have to wonder what other essential Apple chose to omit.

😂 you're wrong on so many fronts, with so many wrong assumptions. I have an Xbox One Series X as well as a PS5.

For what it's worth, to mute on the current Siri remote, you could also loooong-press on the "volume down" button ;)

So? They also have simple games. The thing is you’re not limited to them.

Right, but they are also more expensive, require an entirely different type of support, are physically huge pieces of hardware, and are overkill for the gaming needs/desires of very many people with plenty of money to spend on content, regardless.

That Apple isn’t even intending to compete in the console gaming space makes a lot of sense. Your arguments suggesting otherwise do not.

More expensive? A more powerful Series S is only $40-$60 more. An even more powerful PS5 is only $140-$160 more and both will last 6-7 years. AppleTV will have gone through 2-3 iterations by then.

only $140-$160 more

i.e. "almost double the price"

It also requires an entirely different type of support, is a physically tremendous piece of hardware, and is overkill for the gaming needs/desires of very many people with plenty of money to spend on content, regardless.

Are you arguing that the AppleTV is a better gaming system than the Series S?

Of course not.
Ah, it is just weird saying that the Series S is overkill for the kinds of gaming most people want, when you can’t really guarantee folks are buying the AppleTV to play games at all. You can be sure that someone buying a Series S will buy at least 1 game (or use Gamepass) since that is the stated purpose of the system. The other stuff it can do (media) is just icing on the cake (this is probably IMO).

(this is probably IMO).

Most of this discussion is, and it’s also veered quite a bit from the gatekeeping nonsense that sparked it.

Anyone who argues that “real gamers don’t play games on AppleTV” —especially in this context — is missing the point that Apple doesn’t care what does and what does not constitute "a real gamer.”

Wow, Apple. That makes this AppleTV a complete non-starter. I've been waiting since last August (when I got a new 4K TV) for a new AppleTV. My daughters play both a tennis game and Just Dance on the AppleTV. Both require a controller with an accelerometer. Just Dance will allow second, third, and fourth players to use their iPhone (and its accelerometer) to dance along, but the first person must still use the regular remote. This is a significant omission. I will be continuing to wait for the gaming-focused AppleTV.
Yeah this is a bonehead stupid move by Apple. Again. Last Siri remote was hot garbage and this one swaps out the maggots for gnat larvae. Another example of Steve’s legacy. (Hardware) Products passed thru his hands before hitting the market. No one up top is a products and design person and it shows. Embarrassingly so.

This is devastating news for the twelve people in the world who do gaming on their ATV.
My daughter does Just Dance often, esp. on inclimate days during her breaks from remote schooling. They get my 10.99 every quarter (or 70% perhaps? Maybe 85%?). So it becomes real money for someone. The swipe-a-holic Siri remote is still garbage on a stick, but this new one now makes that garbage into a bag of poo…. On a stick. Useless and embarrassing.
