Why no love for the iPad mini? If it's because they just have better margins making their flagship model? (I guess that would make sense…)

As it is, the current mini is more expensive, yet seems to come with a weaker camera and chip. Yet more storage.

I'm phone indifferent. And I have my hands deep in Windows/Linux and am hardly even touching MacOs. But the iPad to me is Apple's best device. It fills a spot for me as a usable piece of equipment that there isn't much competition for. I'd like to carry around an iPad mini as it's much more reasonably sized than an iPad.

The iPad Mini is foolishly priced at $399 for 128 GB only. Way more than the average user needs.

Those bezels though, it's 2018, get rid of them.
how would you hold an ipad without any bezels? I don't get this. I want more bezels I have chubby fingers.

ALSO, suggesting to use it in landscape mode is a bit non sense. why eliminate the comfort using it in portrait mode? I understand every user have different preference but you are not the only customer here.

And hold onto WHAT, exactly?

Tablets are held differently from phones, unless you have a 1 square-foot palm...

I said it in several posts here, touching the sides of display unintentionally has no to little effect, there's software for that.

Same as above, read my earlier posts.

Although I share your passionate hatred for the appearance of bezels, I do think thinner bezels are a selling point for the Pro models.
I have a 12.9” iPad Pro. Bezels are the same size as this device.

So basically you’re saying form over function.

2018 isn’t a relevant point depending on how factor the bezels. For some, The bezels serve their purpose Where it Allows you to adjust your grip when holding the iPad for longer periods of time without inadvertently touching the Display. Especially for the larger 12.9 iPad, the bezels are beneficial enough with hand fatigue because of the larger size.

Agreed.

The bezels on an iPad are there for a need that isn’t present on an iPhone, they provide an area to grip without interrupting what is being presented on the screen.

Huh, did I mention competition.
Sigh. You're acting like the tablet industry has moved toward a bezel-less experience, completely untrue. Apple owns the tablet space.

Additionally, this is the lowest price tablet from Apple, so it's not going to be the most cutting edge.

Pretty positive most use them in landscape mode so it's a non issue, if it ever was for the last few years, touching the sides of the display is no issue.

And then there's this

When I hold the iPad in landscape, my thumb and heal of hand rest on the bezels near the home button and front facing camera. This provides a nice grip that does not cover or interfere with the screen. It also allows me to quickly hit the home button with my thumb, rather than moving my hand to swipe up.

Still 60% of the tablet market is Android or Android-based for Amazon's sake (mostly cheap tablets for media purposes which most people use their ipads for too)............Apple is just the only one that truly profits from it and maybe Amazon and Samsung due to their advertising etc.

It makes me wonder what's in store for the iPad Pro that would make me want to upgrade.

We'll probably see an iPad Pro update at WWDC and at a minimum we can expect a CPU/GPU/MCP upgrade. OLED is likely too expensive to replace the current displays. There is a lot of speculation that the bezels will be significantly reduced or even eliminated along with the home button, but that would mean moving to FaceID and ensuring it works in both portrait and landscape mode.

Why no love for the iPad mini?/QUOTE]

I would not be surprised that iPad Mini sales have shrunk significantly with the launch of the iPhone Plus and now we also have the iPhone X and the rumored iPhone X Plus. Taken together, it could be that the Mini's sales no longer justify updates, especially if the embedded markets that use them to run specialized vertical market applications do not need more power than what is already present.

Does the new 2017 model have an air gap between the front glass and the display or is it laminated like the Air 2 and the Pro? My wife has the 2016 model, and I really don't like the slightly bendy feel of the screen when you touch it compared to my Air 2. Nothing I've seen on line seems to be talking about this.

Can't understand why techies get so bent out of shape over bezels.
They're not even that big. Look at the pre-Air iPads! (which many people are still using).

So put your thimb on the screen. It’s 2018. Let me gues you still miss the VHS tapes and floppy disks?

That's such a poor comparison. Bezels are cosmetic. Small ones are just the more modern style, but it has nothing to do with the actual technology. VHS and floppy disks are significantly inferior in terms of function compared to their modern counterparts.

Non-laminated screen?

The screen is non-laminated. Externally the 2018 model is identical to the 2017 model.

By the way, are stores generally open in the US on Good Friday? My iPad which shipped yesterday and is currently in a warehouse about 40 minutes drive away isn't scheduled to be delivered until Tuesday. It's not even moving within the UPS system today.

Definitely not my cup of tea! Strapping the iPad to one hand limits access to the screen, so it would not be my preferred way to interact with the device. YMMV.

BTW - not sure what you save in weight, size or aesthetic by reducing the bezels a fraction of an inch but placing a large Velcro strap on the back of the iPad to regain the grip. It is kind of like limiting a laptop to one port to save a millimeter of thickness, but then carrying around a box of dongles for connectivity......Plus a can of compressed air to blow out the keyboard because the tolerances are so tight it can’t handle a speck of dust. For me, eliminating the iPad Bezel would just be more form over function.....but, I digress.
