I was able to trade-in my Air2 with a defunct microphone at the apple store today for $225 and get the new 6th Gen iPad and the Pencil. I love the fact that Apple finally has brought in the Pencil compatibility to the base 6th gen iPad.

I'm now trying to figure out how I could use the Pencil for productivity. Especially, for note-taking. I hate taking notes on the computer during meetings. Don't like subjecting others to the keyboard clicking while on a conference call. Now, I can just take notes on my iPad. Excited!:)

Look at Notability. If you take a lot of notes in meetings, it's a life-changer.

I would not be surprised that iPad Mini sales have shrunk significantly with the launch of the iPhone Plus and now we also have the iPhone X and the rumored iPhone X Plus. Taken together, it could be that the Mini's sales no longer justify updates, especially if the embedded markets that use them to run specialized vertical market applications do not need more power than what is already present.

I can understand that the Mini's sales no longer justify updates because Apple finds it profitable to focus their line elsewhere. So, yeah, I myself would prefer an updated Mini. I'd have more use for it than an iPhone X. They're not going to "push" me to an iPhone which I find a ludicrous expense, though. I'll make do with what I have, and look at other options as they come along.

The difference in price between the iPhone and and iPad mini is some $500 though, at least. And the Mini is still larger, and thus easier to use in reading or watching content, or typing on the screen. At least for me.

I'm not big on anything but disposable smartphones. I don't like to read books on them, and I don't like to watch content on them. Considering I'm around WiFi for almost all of my waking hours, I have very little use for a "phone" other than the basics and for audio content. And music/podcasts/Spotify work the same on any Apple device as my Android freebee. And I was glad to be unchained from iTunes as well.

Using the iPad Pro 9.7 here since 2 years. The pencil makes no noise. It glides seamlessly over the glass. The only thing you hear of it is when you've e.g. Notability and are audio recording, and are tapping on the screen - but for yourself or bystanders, you won't notice anything.

Unless I'm overlooking it, a major difference is that the iPad 2018 does not have the keyboard connector that the iPad Pro has. So you're left with using a bluetooth keyboard that needs to be charged separately.
I am using the pencil o the 12.9" 2nd gen which makes no noise, but I was commenting on the new iPad with it's air gap and the post of another user who said their Wacom digitizer makes a very audible noise on the new iPad (not pro).

Meeting the $329 price point with basically the functionality of the 9.7" iPad Pro is fantastic. I love the 9.7" Pro, and I know my wife really enjoys using it. I might just have to pick the 6th gen and an iPad Pencil for her.

It makes me wonder what's in store for the iPad Pro that would make me want to upgrade. Sure, 10.5" gives me more screen real estate, but there was nothing in the 10.5" that made me feel like I had to upgrade my 9.7". Also, my unrelated pipe dream is a MacBook with Pencil support on the trackpad.

The pro has a much nicer screen with a higher refresh rate, making it a smoother experience than the non-pro version.
[doublepost=1522543117][/doublepost]It's a shame that it seems Apple is abandoning the iPad mini. My wife absolutely loves hers and doesn't want the bigger, heavier models.

Looks like it dropped on something given the localized impact shatter, so you're either lying or your kid is telling a story. That was NOT simply a carpet drop unless your carpet is made of coins.

I'm pretty surprised glass breaks when dropped on something hard.

Thank you for your comment. It dropped on the corner. I'm not a glass expert (or a Liar) but I'll let your troll comment go ;-)

I guess that means the glass is not laminated then
How much for a glass repair?

It's quite an expensive repair compared to the cost of a new unit. The cost of the repair is $368 AUD. The cost of a new unit is $439. So the cost of repair is 83% of a new unit (ouch!).

If you're in the market for a new unit then then AppleCare is probably a good option at $99 AUD with a $65 per incident fee. I had a quick look online and 3rd parties are repairing Gen 5 for $125 (which may be the only real viable option if not covered by AppleCare).

Lesson learnt!

Wow, that really costs an arm and leg
I thought it was about $70. Ouch

I have dropped my iPod touch literally dozens of times, outside on the road (leaving a car) on a concrete, in the mountains. Nothing. Realty no problem whatsoever.

Then, one day, I have dropped it on the fake wood flooring (linoleum) and the screen just shattered

I know I have dropped it so many times before and should have gotten a case,

and that it may have been damaged somewhere, not visibly though, but the surprise of the glass getting broken when not falling face down and, on a relatively soft surface, was quite surprising.

Who is trolling? It’s clear the glass hit something in that spot.

If your kid’s lips are moving, they are lying.

Honestly, I had the same thought when I saw the impact spot on that iPad, but what do you gain by your arrogant tone, and your “either or” idiotic allegations? The point was that an iPad broke on day one, and that he all in all was handling it pretty cool. Then came a troll along. Now you will pretend there are two trolls, none of which is you. How predictable!
Your deviation of the topic is even more pointless than the bezel babble in here.

What do any of us gain by posting counterpoints, such as your own?

I really would buy 2018 iPad if Apple would double the memory to 4GBs. It is still the LPDDR3 goes back to like 2009 era and it dirty cheap to buy for a manufacturer! 2GB in a mobile device other then Apple is unheard of now anyways.

You have to admit 32GB is a paltry amount in 2018. 64GB should’ve been the base at $329 with the 128GB option at $379-399. One more thing, I think the iPad mini 4 should either be discontinued or upgraded/redesigned.

I agree with you.

All iPads have had excellent thumb rejection ever since the iPad mini in 2012. People were concerned about the tiny bezels on the mini, but it turned out to be a non-issue. If you put your thumb on the edge of the screen the iPad will intelligently detect a large thumb print and reject input. If you have an iPad, try it out. I hold my iPad with a thumb on screen all the time and never have I experienced and issue with mistaken inputs.
Thumb rejection on the iPads is good but not perfect. I have occasional issues with my iPad Pro 10.5 which has very thin bezels on the long sides. Every once and awhile I’ll be trying to do something on my iPad and the swipes don’t work or work the way I think they should, then I realize my thumb is pressing on the screen on a side with a thin bezel, as soon as I lift it off it starts working again. I think it depends a lot on the app being used, but either way it never happened before on the iPads I’ve owned prior to the 10.5 Pro because they had larger bezels. I’m a big iPad fan and generally favor smaller bezels, but I also have to be honest that thumb rejection is not yet perfected.

Oh my gawwwwwwd who gives a flying donut about bezels or lack thereof. You've really chugged the design wankery kool-aid if you think that matters.

Now, an iPad Mini with Pencil support... how hard could that be? The Mini is THE best form factor for reading and especially TYPING and I think it would be for doodling as well.

I don't know if it's a cost point thing or weird-ass competition from "Plus"-size phones, but the Pencil really needs more universal support... this cheaper normal sized iPad should just be the first step

The $329 iPad 2GB/32GB direct competitor is Amazon Fire HD 10 2GB/32GB but at half the cost at $149 and even the 64GB version is only $189.
