I can't grip my iPad with one hand wrapped around the back and sides like I can with my iPhone. I wind up pinching the bezels with my fingers to hold it. Without the bezels I would have inadvertent presses all the time.

The top and bottom bezels could be a tad smaller though. No reason they shouldn't be the same size all around the device.

Agreed.

The bezels on an iPad are there for a need that isn’t present on an iPhone, they provide an area to grip without interrupting what is being presented on the screen.
Handy to hold your iPad comfortable. Don’t understand the issue some have with bezels.

Likewise

All iPads have had excellent thumb rejection ever since the iPad mini in 2012. People were concerned about the tiny bezels on the mini, but it turned out to be a non-issue. If you put your thumb on the edge of the screen the iPad will intelligently detect a large thumb print and reject input. If you have an iPad, try it out. I hold my iPad with a thumb on screen all the time and never have I experienced and issue with mistaken inputs.

The iPad Mini is foolishly priced at $399 for 128 GB only. Way more than the average user needs.

Do you remember the time they have said that mini was the best selling iPad? It was “too cheap” for Apple and so they have decided to murder it by not upgrading it.
Nobody buys outdated and everybody waits if the upgrade comes.

Customer
no mini update again, let’s just get “the more expensive one”

Meanwhile at Apple
Oh, nobody buys our outdated mini, what a shock. Let’s say they are not so popular anymore and kill them

Same goes to Mac Mini

The more I think about this I’d almost consider the iPad not recognizing a finger touching the screen as a flaw.

To be slightly more on topic, me and my daughter picked up a 'gold' one, and we're pretty happy. I need to warn anybody with prospects on the gold version: it is rather pink gold, and not gold, just so you know.

FWIW: I have an iPhone X and I miss the bezel of my previous iPhone 7 Plus. The bezel discussion is tiresome childish blablah and just a matter of taste.

Well all of the above is just my opinion... I hope you care as less about it as I care about the whole thread above. This is about the new iPad, perhaps we'll keep the focus?

i was surprise with this. i went ahead and checked the status of it yesterday and saw that it was available for pick up and went straight to the apple store and pick one up. apparently they had stock in the back but still have not received a display unit. was expecting it to be available next week like all the other people were saying but this was a nice surprise

Indeed it was! I checked with premium dealers in my town in Sweden, they were not knowing about when they would get them in. Then I called Apple, and asked if available at the Apple Store 80 km away. He said that undortunately no, not yet...
I was being obnoxious and heced the Apple Store app, it showed as ’available for pick up today’, when I placed an order. After calling Apple Store on the phone again I was asking what or who is correct, and shure it was available! So, we cancelled some other plans, confirmed the order and went straight to the store.

Now that was odd, but a nice surprise indeed, for my daughter, since the kid had been waiting for two months after her birthday. It was the perfect gift that unfortunately launched ’some day’, said dad...

As an additional surprise: we live in Sweden

I honestly admire your dedication to your child. Cancel plans and go 80km to buy a present, very nice gesture indeed
Did you get the pen too? Just wondering how it all perform together, as I am tempted to buy one, as a gift.

(Not important, but you have mentioned Sweden 2x :) )

Meeting the $329 price point with basically the functionality of the 9.7" iPad Pro is fantastic. I love the 9.7" Pro, and I know my wife really enjoys using it. I might just have to pick the 6th gen and an iPad Pencil for her.

It makes me wonder what's in store for the iPad Pro that would make me want to upgrade. Sure, 10.5" gives me more screen real estate, but there was nothing in the 10.5" that made me feel like I had to upgrade my 9.7". Also, my unrelated pipe dream is a MacBook with Pencil support on the trackpad.

I was able to trade-in my Air2 with a defunct microphone at the apple store today for $225 and get the new 6th Gen iPad and the Pencil. I love the fact that Apple finally has brought in the Pencil compatibility to the base 6th gen iPad.

I'm now trying to figure out how I could use the Pencil for productivity. Especially, for note-taking. I hate taking notes on the computer during meetings. Don't like subjecting others to the keyboard clicking while on a conference call. Now, I can just take notes on my iPad. Excited!:)

I bought 2x in Sydney retail store this afternoon. Had for about 40 minutes and the kids dropped one on the carpet floor (unit was in a brand new case). Screen shattered :-( I can't believe how easy it went. Do I get the prize for the 1st drop test? On the bright side, the other unit takes an awesome photo of the broken unit.

Pretty positive most use them in landscape mode so it's a non issue, if it ever was for the last few years, touching the sides of the display is no issue.
Not so sure about the landscape thing. PDF Expert still does not support two page view of PDFs in landscape view, which seems to suggest that it is not an important (aka often asked about) feature.

Thanks. Well child dedication is key, I think that is well understood by many ;)

Well, I had bought the pen rather impulsively, as I own an iPad Pro, which I had bought out of dire necessity. My 4 month old MB Pro had been stolen, namely. At the time, I was unsure how it would add to my productivity, so I figured it would be a shared item with my doughter who loves to draw and has a need to create.

You should go figure: we drove back to the Apple Store the day after and enjoyed a (dedicated) course on drawing and sketching on iPad with the pencil, using Procreate. We had those installed on both hers and mine, lended an additional pencil for my son, and it was just perfect!

The guy at Apple went from scratch trough the functions, and after less than an hour, both were drawing using layers on too of an imported image.
I can very much recommend the ‘Today at Apple’ feature.

Unnecessary double reference, edited .

Some useful info by the way: that Logitech ‘Crayon’ will only be marketed towards schools and only inside the US. Well, that’s such a turnoff to hear... that pencil is far too expensive, and renders the cheaper ipad to become a locomotive for the sales of them.

So: cool to have the cheaper ipad with those specs, especially the pencil compatibility, but come on... Apple should either make a package price or offer the cheaper alternative. This makes little sense to me.

They are using old surplus parts.
iPhone SE style, you mean
Interesting thought, and probably on spot!

Oh no! That is indeed the very first droptest for me... You gotta mention the beauty of sharing on top of the other unit making that image. Love that spirit in this context

2018 isn’t a relevant point depending on how factor the bezels. For some, The bezels serve their purpose Where it Allows you to adjust your grip when holding the iPad for longer periods of time without inadvertently touching the Display. Especially for the larger 12.9 iPad, the bezels are beneficial enough with hand fatigue because of the larger size.

how would you hold an ipad without any bezels? I don't get this. I want more bezels I have chubby fingers.

ALSO, suggesting to use it in landscape mode is a bit non sense. why eliminate the comfort using it in portrait mode? I understand every user have different preference but you are not the only customer here.

10.5" iPad Pro has more than enough bezel to hold the device, but if the new iPad had Apple Pencil, the large display and a fairly capable processor, where would be the differentiation that justifies the Pro being twice the price?

Indeed, bezel nerds should look upwards in the price category. Their needs are simply more expensive.

Just a detail: you mean it has pencil compatibility... no iPad comes with the pencil, unfortunately.

I'm really thinking of replacing my 2017 9.7" ipad with one. I thought I wanted to wait for the Pro but I don't do anything intense and I like that it's almost half the cost plus I can use the Pencil. hmm.

Same here. As long as procreate works well enough... I can’t justify iPad Pro. Apple has done a very un-apple like thing here... by not holding out on a functionality to up-sell people to a higher end model. Good on them

I am quite sure that the Apple Pencil is not a big seller, if even the iPad Pro is.. So they make a cheaper iPad, using existing hardware, add the pencil compatibility and... the atrocious expensive pen will sell better.
It's still Apple: they mean to be cool, but suck money like no other.

The more I think about this I’d almost consider the iPad not recognizing a finger touching the screen as a flaw.

If you are using your finger tip (as you would normally do when tapping or doing other gestures) near the edge the screen would work normally. If you use your entire finger on one spot the screen would detect the larger touch area and it would be read as a finger of the hand holding onto the iPad and it would reject the input. It’s actually quite an ingenious system and has always worked well for me.

They should have make the new iPad 64GB\128GB while keeping the same prices, the iPad Pro with 256GB\512GB with the correct 64GB\256GB prices. And since they didn’t update the iPad Mini, they should have cut the price in $100\€100.

Why no love for the iPad mini? Is it because they just have better margins making their flagship model? (I guess that would make sense…)

As it is, the current mini is more expensive, yet seems to come with a weaker camera and chip. Yet more storage.

I'm phone indifferent. And I have my hands deep in Windows/Linux and am hardly even touching MacOs. But the iPad to me is Apple's best device. It fills a spot for me as a usable piece of equipment that there isn't much competition for. I'd like to carry around an iPad mini as it's much more reasonably sized than an iPad.

There are plenty of love for the iPad Mini out there in the wild, just not from apple side… same goes for MacMini and iP SE… o_O

I guess that means the glass is not laminated then
How much for a glass repair?

I am curious to hear if the Apple pencil makes as much noise as a Wacom digitizer on this (as per this thread). Will probably pick one up when things are back to normal here for my mom. Her iPad 2 needs replacing.

Using the iPad Pro 9.7 here since 2 years. The pencil makes no noise. It glides seamlessly over the glass. The only thing you hear of it is when you've e.g. Notability and are audio recording, and are tapping on the screen - but for yourself or bystanders, you won't notice anything.

It might of been mentioned, but here is a comparison of the old 9.7 iPad Pro and the current 9.7 iPad with pencil support.

Unless I'm overlooking it, a major difference is that the iPad 2018 does not have the keyboard connector that the iPad Pro has. So you're left with using a bluetooth keyboard that needs to be charged separately.

Looks like it dropped on something given the localized impact shatter, so you're either lying or your kid is telling a story. That was NOT simply a carpet drop unless your carpet is made of coins.

I'm pretty surprised glass breaks when dropped on something hard.
