It's dramatically different than other iPad displays with smoother text, better gameplay, and enhanced videos.

It doesn’t have smoother text.
How can a screen have gameplay? What does that even mean? Are you referring to the 120hz refresh rate that only a handful of games take advantage of?

i have a feeling that the iPad Pro might be updated in early summer and to something that makes it miles above this new iPad. like an OLED screen with 4K HDR support (and the store will allow you to stream those files like you can on your apple tv 4k). hopefully also a way better backlight. maybe wireless charging also. Face ID I'm not sure about cause of the physical mechanics of a screen that big and where do you put the camera to make it most usable.

I can run multiple Apps in real time (multitasking) on an A7 equipped iPad Mini with 1GB of RAM. Something that should be impossible according to you.

Take a break from spreading misinformation and actually understand how iOS works. This easy to digest article still applies except 10 minute background running exception has been reduced to 3 minutes outside of the small handful of exception apps. For example, an active SSH session on iOS that a student has connected to robotics, IoT, etc. to log data will go poof and die after 3 minutes in the background. This behavior is more like an iPod than a computer replacement.

I don't need an education on iOS multitasking since I actually code for it. I also code for Android.

Your link to an old article or experience with an App that likely wasn't properly coded doesn't change the fact I can run multiple Apps CONCURRENTLY on an iPad with an A7 and 1GB RAM. For as long as I want.

Only one spreading misinformation is you.

Comparing the specs between the 5th and 6th generation of iPads, the 5th generation comes w/both GPS, as well as High Dynamic Range (HDR), while the new 6th doesn't.

Don't these two (2) features add a little to the 5th vs. the 6th?

I presently own a Gen 3 iPad Mini (128 GB), so I'm thinking about upgrading.

They won't give it OLED...that's for sure. I think it will be a QuadHD Plus IPS screen (heck probably same screen as the current ipad pros knowing apple with increased brightness like we need anymore brightness) with just the same ppi and better HDR support than now. 4 GB ram and FaceID is a given and we will still see no mouse support. Imagine the costs associated with a large OLED screen (reason galaxy tab S3 and galaxy book 12 are still expensive unless refurbished). Truly, overall I think they will just add the new A11X processor, better camera, faceID (no more touchID although I enjoy it and will keep my 10.5 that extra bit longer due to this) and decrease the bezels and that's all we can expect.

What a naming nightmare. 5th gen ipad, new ipad, new new ipad, new new new ipad, new 10" ipad, new new 9.7" ipad. WTF. Please name it iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad 5, iPad 6, ... iPad 9,...

I don’t see a problem. We never had version numbers for macs and nobody complained.

I find it strange that, while glossing over Apple’s professor upgrades (“faster again? Big deal... we want innovation!”) people will also criticise Apple for using a previous generation processor to keep the price low.

The names are not, and have never been “new ipad”. I see people make this mistake all the time.

The 9.7” iPads have been named as followed:
iPad
iPad 2
iPad
iPad
iPad Air
iPad Air 2
iPad
iPad

There has never been an iPad shipping with the name “the new iPad”. It’s not been printed on a box. It would be like saying the current Macbook Pros are really named “the new MacBook Pro” or the iPhone 8 being called “the new iPhone 8” just bevause if the sentence Apple used to launch the product.

You refer to iPads like you do Macs, if you need to identify it. So the latest 9.7” iPad would be: iPad (Early 2018).

Free Microsoft Office would be a thing for me, making quite the difference.
Getting 365 sub along a full version on the desktop, just because of the slight difference in screen real estate, is questionable.

I understand that 6th gen iPad is cheap, so the only things they changed are A10 chip + pencil support. I also know that pro-motion, True Tone, more RAM etc would make price higher. It's ok for most of the consumnents

BUT

It's 2018 and they still put that crappy 1.2 MP front camera... How much would it cost them to change it to the 5 MP from iPhone 6S (I don't ask for 7 MP, cause this can be another reason for someone to buy iPad Pro). Front camera IMO is more important in iPad (aside AR) and used more often than rear camera. I can't remember taking pictures with iPad, but I use Face Time from time to time, and image is poor. But, ok discussion is not about what camera is more often in usage.

iPad 2018 would cool product and upgrade from 5th gen, if the add just A10 chip, pencil support and 5MP front camera.

Apple pencil works with new ipad version first of it's kind *not* named Pro ?

Very subtle difference. 5th gen is still ligher

I can't agree with you. iPad is very confusing line for non tech people. If some would say to you "I bought iPad", and you ask him which one, the person could say "I don't know, I bought it in 2018" You can't say is it 6th gen or 5th which are still in sell and gonna be there for a while. Also Macs have their own dating method (e.g. early 2017 etc) and this product line is not changing that much other than CPU and GPU power. iPad use to change a lot from version to version until iPad 5th gen came out, last big improvement was iPad Air 2. What I am saying is, it was logical to call it iPad, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4.

It's also not true, Apple didn't say 3rd gen iPad was the new iPad. They used this name several times during presentation, ads and even web site. Next iPad (4th) was just iPad, so term the new iPad was used only for 3rd gen (first picture)

Next year iPad 4th gen was just iPad (2nd picture), not The new iPad. The iPad line naming is terrible...

I think 2Gb is a joke by now.

Also, the Pro needs an update to justify the price. Software seems to be the limiting factor here.

If it doesn't have the 'ProMotion' screen, does that mean that writing and drawing are gonna be laggy?

Plus a 100 other reasons, but the ignorance here by some want-to-believers is just inconceivable.
They deserve the next generation of cramped iPads to be deceived about their Pro-dom

What? The current lineup is literally: iPad mini, iPad, iPad Pro (in 2 sizes). That's it. Where's the nightmare?

Love my 10.5-inch iPad Pro but going to pick up the new iPad to replace the aging iPad 4 we kept as an extra, we really use these things and although still ok for gaming the 4th gen is really getting slow for surfing.

The whole iPad line is very confusing and unless you keep on top of it....you can easily get lost.

Firstly, lets take a step back a year. The iPad (5th Gen) from last March was a step back from the iPad Air 2 (October 2014), screen not as good, thicker and CPU/GPU roughly the same. Yes, Apple make the iPad (2017) a cheaper more budget iPad for consumers, although it was effectively using tech from 2 years previously.

Now this year, the new iPad (6th Gen) sees an Apple Pencil compatible screen and an upgrade from A9 to A10 chipset and thats it...so a small annual upgrade by normal means. Yes it's still budget range price.

Okay comparing the iPad (6th Gen) and iPad Pro (10.5")...the main differences have been stated in the article and in my honest opinion...at this moment in time, the cost difference between these models (£319 vs £619) is huge and there isn't enough tech in there to warrant a £300 (near double cost difference) with the iPads.

This is where the problem is for Apple. At this moment in time we are a rather ridiculous range of price-points for iPads:

iPad 32Gb (2018) - £319
iPad Mini 4 128Gb (2015) - £399
iPad Pro 10.5" 64Gb (2017) - £619
iPad Pro 12.9" 64Gb (2017) - £769

Firstly, the Mini 4 is 3 years old and yes you get 128Gb with it, but technically it is easily the weakest in the lineup, it either needs replaced with a newer better model or should be vastly reduced in price to under £300.

Secondly, the gap in price difference bertween the full size iPads is terrible. There is such a large gap, that being honest,I can see a huge number of potential Pro purchasers just going for the cheaper iPad instead.

And lastly, the educational issue. The new 6th Gen cheap iPad just announced doesn't help education much. Its the same price and the pencil isn't for everyone, so being honest, they should have kept last years offerings in the range and reduced it's cost to £250 approx...or just heavily discounted for education only.

After saying all this, by the end of the year, this is what I reckon should happen:

iPad 32Gb (2017 model) - £250 or less for education only
iPad Mini 4 or 5 (32Gb) - £279
iPad 32Gb (2018 model) - £319
iPad Pro 10.5" 64Gb (2017 model) - recuced to £499
iPad Pro 10.5" 128Gb (2018 model) - £619 or more depending on tech
iPad Pro 12.9" (2017 model) - discontinued
iPad Pro 12.9" 128Gb (2018 model) - £769 or more depending on tech

I understand that 6th gen iPad is cheap, so the only things they changed are A10 chip + pencil support. I also know that pro-motion, True Tone, more RAM etc would make price higher. It's ok for most of the consumnents

iPad 2018 would cool product and upgrade from 5th gen, if the add just A10 chip, pencil support and 5MP front camera.

Apple is trying to market iPad as a creativity device. I am guessing that one use case would be for students to record videos, then edit them using iMovie. You can also use the rear camera to take scans of documents. I suppose Apple seems the rear camera a higher priority than the front camera.

iPad Pro 10.5 has been my primary computer since last September. It’s a computing marvel — it feels like how a tool is supposed to be, and that the promise of iOS for serious work has finally been fulfilled. It absolutely does not need a mouse, and all the connectivity issues can be overcome.

I won’t be upgrading to a new version, but I’m thrilled if Apple takes the iPad Pro seriously enough to refresh a flagship device so soon.
