Broadwell ULX is just 4.5W TDP, and will allow fanless x86 laptop. It is however still sometime away, so I don't see this rumored update happening "soon".

Interesting but the rumour says the update is coming soon. If they switch to ARM processor they could also reduce the cost of components and reduce the retail price. It would also open up the MB to whole lot more apps. Seems a win win to me. If you want the power of an Intel processor you would probably go for the MBP rather than the MBA anyway.

Reading comprehension: a 12" rMBA that is 1 lbs lighter, $500 less, nearly the same processor, with a 1" smaller screen -- who would be buying the 13" rMBP?

500 dollars less? Where are you getting that number? You really think a retina MBA would be 799?

So much speculation .. is it ARM based, is it iPad pro, what is it? How are they going fanless! If they can keep this under wraps until the announcement it will be a nice return to having a surprise announcement at WWDC :)

For the 12th time.. MacBooks won't switch to ARM processors. That's not a possibility.

What Garylapointe said below you is the most likely reason why they're going with a 12" MBA. Assuming this is true, if you want an Apple laptop, you're probably gonna have three choices: A 12" MBA, a 13" MBP, and a 15" MBP. They're consolidating their lineup with this move.

Definitely seems like a logical step. I'd rather Apple keep the 13-inch form factor for the MBA, but since the 13-inch rMBP is already quite slim, I could live with that if I bought one.

I don't need the 'power' of an Intel processor (though I do like how more powerful they are than the current ARM processors), I want the compatibility:

I run many Window's x86 programs via BootCamp and an ARM-based MBA would mean I'd need to purchase a Windows's ultra -book instead of a MBA.

Agreed. There is zero chance they would move to ARM, it makes no sense.

I suspect either broadwell or cherry trail processor. Intel has been making huge advances on those Atom processors recently and the micro-architechture for cherry trail will be airmont.

Probably it will be broadwell though.

And for god's sake can we let the 17" MBP lie in piece. It is dead and not coming back

For the people who want arm processors and gimmicky detachable keyboards and touchscreens, there are plenty of those (pieces of crap) from the competitors...

Apple isn't going to do any of those any time soon. Maybe you should look elsewhere.

It is a possibility, but I think it is highly unlikely at this time. I think ARM needs to get closer to Intel's x86 chips in terms of processing power.

Are those atom processors up to par with the current i5's in the air? No way Apple introduces a large drop off in performance in they're not.

All the reports are saying no iWatch until Q3; I'd love it if they surprised us and demoed it (or something else new) at WWDC; it's a dev conference, but this is a new platform, so I see how they could work it in...

I'm guessing they go back to the old 13" price of $1199 and justify the loss of an inch and the hike of $100 with the display - that would make sense.

So essentially the rumoured 12" iPad pro gets shoehorned into a ultra-thin, fanless MacBook Air form factor.

Sounds sexy, but would this not kill sales of the existing 11and 13 inch MBA's?

Assuming the price is in-between (or, more likely, closer to the 13" price), Apple will probably take the 11" and 13" off the market and move to full Retina - I'm expecting this on the MBP any day now...

FYI: iOS is the ARM version of OS X, it just doesn't have the Cocoa UI recompiled for ARM, which won't take much.

You are grossly oversimplifying things. Sure, iOS shares OS X Darwin foundation, but it would take a heck of a lot more than just "recompiling Cocoa" in order to evolve iOS into a full desktop OS. There are certain things that would not even be supportable in their current form (e.g. Thunderbolt peripherals) in an ARM system.

Furthermore, it would make absolutely no sense for Apple to go away from x86, with Broadwell around the corner. It would make more sense for them to do an x86-based iPad than ARM-based MacBook at this stage.

All this ARM MacBook talk is nonsense perpetuated by people with very little knowledge.

Why? What's the point in having a MBA and MBP if the only difference is the Intel processor? Might as well scrap the MBA in that case.

Wouldn't it make more sense to try and get all those new Apple users who've bought an iPhone or iPad to add a MB to their collection. If the MBA has ARM + iOS it makes that migration less daunting because you can use your iPad apps on your MBA.
