Haha! Thanks for that one.

No problem :)

Back on topic. I don't feel like buying an Apple TC... but if I must.. then that'll be a downer. Why can my Mac just upload directly to cloud? It can. Don't say iDisk - that is painful.

This already exists...

Access your drive over the Internet.

Say you’re traveling and you need a file on your Time Capsule back at home. If you’re a MobileMe member using a Mac with Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard, no problem.2 You can access all the files on your Time Capsule drive over the Internet. Simply register your Time Capsule with your MobileMe account, and its drive appears in the Finder sidebar of your Mac just like any other attached drive. It’s like having your own personal file server wherever you go.

And how do I do that from an iPad or iPhone?

I bet you're going to be able to do that without having to buy a TC. But I bet the Apple rent for storing "everything" on Apple servers plus the premium you'll pay your broadband provider(s) for streaming "everything" will turn out to make adding a local iCloud in the form of some kind of Time Capsule the better deal.

I really doubt a new TC will be forced upon everyone. But I bet you can't enjoy all of the benefits of iCloud if you don't buy some new hardware (and/or install the upgrade on existing TC or AEBS hardware). I still think the legal issues described much earlier in this thread is why this TC rumor is even spinning right now. I'm betting it will be the way to store your non-iTunes-purchased media in your own local iCloud so that the iCloud service can offer all of your content (purchased or not purchased from the iTunes store) wherever you are.

So Apple has finally decided to release what basically comes down to an iTunes server.

Finally. I own all my little Apple products and I troop to the store to buy their new stuff but the one thing that was sorely missing was a dedicated iTunes server device.

They better support Aperture...as far as document storage it will be nice for some but all I really care about is multi media.

Anyone want to buy a nice Core i7 Hackintosh...the one I just built last week to do the very thing that this new TC hopefully will do?

I'll gladly be in line to fork over my $200-$400 with a smiling face. Beyond them announcing virtualization licensing for osX Server this is the best I can hope for.

If this rumor is true I don't think Apple really knows what this whole "cloud" concept is.

Why should I pay them a yearly fee of any sort to access data I'm hosting in my own home on my own internet service?

Also, I hope you (U.S.-based) people have read the fine print on your internet service agreements, because pretty much every residential ISP has "running a server" on it's list of prohibited activities. Once they figure out how this thing works they'll be blocking ports or shutting off customers for TOS violation.

I wonder who would win in a lawsuit: Apple or Comcast. :D

What lawsuit? Comcast is a private company, they can run their service however they like. The subscriber would be in violation of the terms they agreed to. The sub has no basis to sue them, and Apple sure isn't going to sue ISP's on their behalf.

The customer is free to change ISPs if they don't like Comcast's TOS, but guess what? All ISPs have this clause.

Why new Time Machine? Upload too?

A new design for the Time Machine wouldn't be necessary for this to work would it?

Would you be able to upload data from say your iPad to the iCloud to your Time Machine to sync with your Mac? e.g. photos whilst on location.

I like this, this could mean they are launching 2 versions of iCloud. A paid for version which all your stuff is stored on their servers and a free version where you use your TC as the server. This would mean if you have a fast enough internet connection then you don't have to rent storage space off Apple servers.

Definately going to be some kind of dual approach solution that appeals to most. Too many people over reacting to either or.

Audio Galaxy "just works" and cost $0.00. Just use your own Mac with your own songs you already have. No fee for storage, no fee for streaming, no new hardware to buy.
I thought Audio Galaxy died almost a decade ago.

It might be best to wait until Monday for confirmation of this rumour before everyone jumps to conclusions.
This definitely needs a lot more explanation.

We are getting close to Windows Home Server territory. That market flourished and then dried up rather quickly with rage over Drive Extender. Though the idea of a $199 box under Vail that could stream your home media and Windows Media Center recordings did have some appeal.

What if these TC iClouds can find each other? This could be a serious threat to Facebook. Decentralized social networking that people will actually use.

Yes, because all my friends are going to run out and buy TCs...

It can build slowly over time. You start out syncing your iPhoto to your cloud, then one day your TC notices a friend's TC is also out there, and then you discover you can see some of his photos on your iPhoto. Suddenly, a social network forms out of the ether.

Sounds as exciting as Ping.

Facebook wasn't all that exciting sounding to people years ago. Neither was Twitter.

Ping was forced on us and it's very limiting and unnatural.

This could grow organically. It could find its own niche over time and eventually encompass many services and interactions. Put the social networking directly into the operating system.

Why should we have to have data silos controlled by a single corporation?

I agree that decentralized social networking is needed, but it would need to be platform agnostic to succeed, (take a look at Diaspora if you haven't already) and that's not something Apple would do. They are only interested in things that they can tie to hardware sales.

I can see folks storing all there media on the new TC, streaming through apple's cloud while apple keeps a list of what everyone has. Then use that info to send you ads. Also checks if it's pirated or not too. Brilliant apple. Easy way to see what folks like to watch or listen to. I'll pass.

It's a stroke of genius for Apple and the worshippers nealt down before Steve.

The plan will sell more time capsules than ever. Brilliant.

I think you meant to say... "knelt"
