I may do but as the ATV doesnt do what I want it to (yet) then I'll just wait and see what happens. I'm primarily looking for a music streaming solution, and have a couple of options in mind, but if Apple were to bring out an integrated solution, then that would potentially go to the top of the list.

Fair point, it's still short on features for us in UK.

Sure they COULD. They COULD do anything they want. But in the end this is about $$$$$$. So why would they make a Time Capsule that can be an Apple TV when they can get you to buy both. Along with an ATV for each of your 4 televisions.

They might do that because I might buy it, whereas I buy neither an Apple TV nor a Time Capsule today.

It's just so much more cost efficient. The Apple TV has the complete hardware that you need for a Time Capsule, except for a big ass hard drive, and that of course allows you to remove the flash memory. I'd actually make two versions; one Apple TV + 320 GB drive, still quite small, and it is fine for handling iPads, or an MBA with a small drive. The other an Apple TV with 1 TB and space for two 3.5" drives. Not quite the small device it is now, but still not big.

OR, don't build in the storage and let people attach whatever size storage works for them too. I hope Apple doesn't decide to pick the capacities for this thing as whatever they pick will be too large (and thus too pricey) for some and too small (and thus insufficient) for others.

How about a device that let's us attach or insert whatever we need?

Yep my thoughts too - something to act as a combined solution and provide seamless extension of my MBA would be very useful. Guess we'll know by this time tomorrow

That's totally not Apple. I wouldn't expect anything like this even if i was dreaming.

Indeed. Instead of an expensive "combined" ATV+TC device, split everything up.

Keep $99 ATV
$99 Airport/iTunes Server (no more extreme or TC)
Firewire, USB ports, hell maybe even a thunderbolt port if Apple is feeling adventurous and forward thinking. Make the new Airport stackable with the ATV.

Bring your own hard drive. Most of us already have external TM backups anyway. Buy the functionality you want. I have plenty of storage, and have no desire for ATV stuff. This would cater to me, and to everyone else.

I don't think Apple will do this, though.

Maybe iCloud is an actual hardware product.

No, in the press release they described iCloud as their "upcoming cloud services offering."

That doesn't sound like a product from the Apple we know.

You seem to be understanding this idea but I have just one question:

Do I really need to buy another piece of hardware from Apple to accomplish this? considering:

1. we don't know what iCloud is
2. this implementation might require hardware
3. cost of new TCs

This is the IInd time, Apple is going to differentiate services based on some external charge. First was MobileMe and I have been a loyal customer for a while now.

I did come across a post where you say the device costs $99 and one gets free subscription for iCloud services for one year.

That sounds reasonable but these are basic features, one wishes to get without any extra cost.

This whole idea doesn't seem to be right for most people as this would incur further costs and hardware. :|

My thought was that the ATV becomes the base option for streaming iTunes from the iCloud, iwth progressively higher spec devices with increasing storage for those who wanted an integrated home server

But then what do I know. Meh

I don't know. The way the Phone companies are going with LTE they could technically extend it out to home internet. I read somewhere that LTE is capable of speeds that will blow the current cable company's speeds away.

www.theregister.com had an article where the claim was made that while LTE has much higher bandwidth for a connection, it doesn't improve the total capacity of a network by a lot.

First i don't understand a thing here :) Second a 99 bucks thing was just my wet dreamy guess :), but i have a feeling that it's not just a service, but a device too.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

FAIL! If iCloud requires everyone to buy Time Capsule for it to work..

Now why would Apple do that, makes no sense.

What I guess will happen is that for people like me I want local files local, but would like other files back up to the cloud so that I can access them at a client for example. And maybe even have access to files that are not on the cloud but I can still get to them thru the cloud.

I like the combination and for $25 a year I will be on board as soon as its out. I am sure knowing Apple that it will do much more than what we speculate and considering the prices from Apple are reasonable and Tax Deductible I for one am smiling all the way to the Store. :D

Will it be cheaper?

I wonder if the new Time Capsule will be your 'ticket' into the cloud, so to speak?

Perhaps, if you purchase a Time Capsule (knowing it's hefty price tag) Apple will realise that we won't want to pay even more for cloud services on top of that, and allow free full use of iCloud? Perhaps including music streaming?-(Or maybe that's a bit optimistic)

I've just bought a Iomega NAS with the intention of centralising my media (mainly iTunes music) to share between computers. It hasn't gone too smoothly needless to say (1 computer on iTunes at a time). I was hoping Apple would come to the rescue with something like this.

So if Apple introduce this new Time Capsule with a considerably cheaper price-tag (or keep it the same and bundle in free iCloud) i'd have to sell my recently purchased Iomega 1TB NAS and router, in replacement for the new Time Capsule.

So do you think the price of the new Time Capsule will drop, increase, or stay the same?

What's the betting the price of the new Time Capsule will drop, increase, or stay the same?

If it has anything to do with iCloud i'd say it will go down drastically. Just think about it. If the price stays in the neighbourhood of the current price what will be the adoption rate of Time Capsule + iCloud? Doesn't make sense.

This thread is too long to read, but does anyone have any indication as to whether a local 'iCloud' would possibly be able to be setup on a Mac Mini w/ a Drobo connected to it? Time Capsules are WAYYYYY too small to be practical for such a service!

None of us will know for sure until after the keynote tomorrow. You never know, this rumour could even turn out to be false.

This WWDC from 97 is fascinating. I love hearing Steve talk like this and not from a script. It's potentially giving away your vision and ideas though if you let something slip.
