I'm waiting on a Griffin iMate to arrive so that I can use my AEK II with my G5

I couldn't get the Apple wireless keyboard to ever connect. I think it's too new for this older machine. But as far as I can tell, BT is working though.
I tried putting Bluetooth in my Early 2005 G5 and I was able to successfully connect both my Aluminum Keyboard and Magic Mouse, however they were not usable without the Bluetooth Antenna so it was pointless for me. I found in my box of treasures a Bluetooth 2.0 USB 2.0 adapter. Plugged that in, and it connected right up and works great. Only problem is to wake the machine, I have to press the power button then it takes about 30 seconds for the keyboard and mouse to connect.
Just as I suspected, the SATA III Samsung 840 doesn't work. I was able to restore from a Time Machine backup to the 840 on this G% using a Leopard install disc. But, when I went to boot from the SSD, the G5 wasn't able to find it as a drive to boot from.
I'll just have to get a SATA II SSD one of these days.
I only tried because I had this extra 840 laying around.
This is interesting as I had an 840 in my G5 for a few months and it worked great. Before the G5 it was in my Mac Pro (I upgraded the drive to an Intel) and before that it was in my iMac G4 with a SATA to IDE adapter. That Samsung drive currently resides in my MacBook1,1 with SATA I like the G5.
Whats the capacity on the drive and was it a regular 840, 840 EVO, or 840 Pro? Mines a regular 840 120GB.
It's just a regular 840, 120GB.
I swapped it between bay one and bay two. When booting from the Leopard disc, running Disk Utility and System Information, it shows up just fine. It just won't find it during the boot process or when running Startup Disc from the DVD.
Thats really odd. Maybe they changed the firmware or something. When did you purchase your SSD if you don't mind me asking?
It's been laying around for a while, but I think I bought it in the summer of 2013, or thereabouts.
IIRC, I got mine shortly after launch of the drives, around late 2012 or there abouts. Maybe a firmware change?
That's certainly a possibility.
I also have a Samsung 830. Do you think I'd have any better luck with that?
I was going to use it for the public beta of Yosemite, but I can swap them around and use the 840 for it...
It worth giving it a go. These G5s get a serious speed bump with SSDs over HDDs. I'd say it about doubles the performance and maxes the SATA I bus.
Maybe I will.
My only concern is that the 840 at 120GB won't be enough to run Yosemite. But, if it's not, I don't really care as I'm not all worked up about it. I just figured since they were offering a free public beta, I'd give it a whirl. But I can just as easily wait until the public release later this year.
How big the 830 that you are replacing it with in the G5?
A whopping 512GB!
WOWZA! I would see if it works and if so look at getting a used or NIB 830 from Amazon or eBay, maybe 120GB or 240-260GB.
Yeah, I know! I really don't want to use a 512GB SSD on this old machine since I have no plans for it other than to make it work as good as it can.
On the other hand, I don't currently have any long-term plans for this 830 anyway.
I just removed it from my 2012 MBP and replaced it with an 840 EVO, 500GB.
Give it a try and see what happens! I'm curious now since the 840 didn't work.
Yup, me too. I have the 830 installed and am now booting the Leopard disc....
I am eager to hear this one...
It'll be about 30-40 minutes for the Time Machine restore to complete before the moment of truth gets here.![]()
Darn... I always do fresh installs to prevent any issues. I wonder if that will cause any SSD problems.
Bah humbug! The 830 ended up with the same results as the 840.
Maybe try a fresh install of Leopard, or use another machine to downgrade the firmware to 2012 firmware?
