You guys of course realise that U2 approached Apple, and not the other way around. U2 also doesn't charge Apple royalties, or a fee or anything like that to use them in advertising. Other than iTMS sales, they don't make anything off of it.

It could be that no other bands are interested, or willing to do it for nothing.

What a waste of a perfectly good special edition iPod. It looks better suited for the White Stripes than for U2. I'm curious if Apple didn't get stuck with a contract for more than one U2 iPod and they filled their part of the bargain quietly because it really wouldn't receive much fanfare anyway.

Bwaha! I love how people are suggesting that the U2 iPod be dropped, because U2 is "way past their prime," and then suggesting a Dave Matthews Band iPod. Did you even LISTEN to "Stand Up?" If EVER there was a textbook case of "way the **** past their prime," that's it.

Let's face it, U2 is still releasing albums that sell millions, touring successfully, and Steve Jobs likes them. So... U2 iPod. Not that surprising.

I mean, I'd like to see a "The Decemberists" iPod (made of wood with the signatures individually carved by each band member, Colin Meloy's would be an X) or a Sigur Rós iPod (so ethereal, it occasionally falls right through your hand) as much as the next music snob. But that doesn't sell enough to make Apple money. They are a business, that's what it comes down to.

How about a real question? Er, more than one. Probably can't be answered today, though.

Is this different from the others? Aren't the others metal back and plastic front? Is the U2 all metal? Will this be less of a scratching issue compared to the standard black iPod?

Where's the Slayer iPod?

Take these crappy U2 iPods, toss a pentagram on the click wheel and rebrand them as the Slayer iPod... esp since today is 6/6/06!!!

Elvis iPod

All white, gold on the back and the King's signature in glitter. I think that one would sell better than a U2 iPod. There are more Elvis fans than U2 fans out there, right?

Honestly if people are that worried about scratching, they should buy an aftermarket case and be done with it. Anything you carry in your pocket to this extent gets scratched.

McDonalds has sold billions of hamburgers but that doesn't make them one of the top 5 hamburgers of all time.................

Most people naturally like what they are told to like. Whether it is via advertising or radio pounding it into their skulls til they can't get it out. That is what U2's music has become (other than the 80's albums). The same thing repeated over and over so the previous fans like it....and hopefully some new fans b/c they hear it enough. The sound is the same. The band is the same. So if you are a U2 fan, why not like it again?

Sales DO NOT = greatness

I could care less if Apple has a U2 iPod......but there's no way I'll buy one.....and I've never seen anybody with one. I've spent plenty of money on U2 stuff in the past, only to be disappointed. And I'm closer to 30 years old....so do not assume I'm a teenager b/c I cannot stand U2.

Where there's a good cause, Bono is near..............as long as there are also cameras and reporters :)

Some people need to wear sunglasses for chronically dilated eyes--I do. I don't know if it is the case with Bono, but I don't see the big deal about it, maybe it's generational, although he's not in my generation...lol.

No one seemed to notice my post about Product Red ( http://www.joinred.com ).

I think it's really strange that a product with red associated with Bono is not part of this project. If iPod U2 were a red product it would make a LOT more sense, and would compel me to buy one over a regular iPod even with the slightly higher price.

EDIT: The sunglasses are apparently not a problem as Bono was able to get Rick Santorum and Jesse Helms and Bush to push through the largest AIDS funding package in the history of the US ($15 billion), all while wearing sunglasses that he is now selling to raise more funds for AIDS. Don't be a hater.

Stop being so negative everyone.
U2 and Apple have a good relationship; I'm personally not a fan of the U2 iPod, and that's why I won't be buying it; it's that simple. Doesn't mean I have to trash it; It obviously did well in the past to be introduced again, and if it fails, no one who didn't buy it gets hurt, and those who bought it, most likely will love theirs.

It's just apple's way of keeping us at macrumors busy til the new nanos in August/September.

Bono wears sunglasses as often as he does because he has sensitive eyes (much more so than the average person, I believe). In other words, it's a medical thing.

As for making judgments on U2 based on radio play, please consider how much airplay your favorite bands get with their best work. It's usually just the pop stuff or singles, even though your favorites are often the lesser-known stuff.

Same with U2. If anyone thinks they're lite-rock only, please listen to Achtung Baby and Pop (mofo in particular).

Thank you.

There sure are a lot of cameras around in Africa, aren't there?

Or not.

If Bono's sunglasses are a medical thing, then I'd assume that Paris Hilton is allergic to normal lighting in a dark room and as such can only be seen under night-vision camera mode.

what a bunch of crap.

If you don not like U2 is fine. but sounds is the same? band is the same. They keep reinventing themselves in albums like achtung baby and How to dismantle...., is a proof of that.
I give them credit for keeping creating good music for so many years, while other bands have only their 15 minutes of fame.

As for Bono just going after the spotlight for a good cause is just ridiculous. The guy deserve all the credit for helping so many people and using his fame for something good. Many important people from head of states to international organizations acknowledge that, so you opinion on this issue is just worthless.

Haven't you heard that stars aren't allowed to push their causes or help people? If they do, they're just camera hogs.

The same thing repeated over and over so the previous fans like it....and hopefully some new fans b/c they hear it enough.

Oh yes, stuff from Boy sure sounds like stuff from Pop (actually, i will follow and Mofo are both about bono's mother).

i don't really care about the u2 ipod (though most previous comments apply).

however, for all those people out there glorifying bono for his charitable work, get over yourselves. this man earns, what, millions and millions? when you have that much money, you don't have to work. you can afford to spend time flying around trying to get people to save a continent that's pretty much rotting from within (ironically, most likely from the imperialism bono's country took part in). yeah, kudos to him for spending his time doing that, but it's nothing special. if you had nothing to do, and had a generous streak, you'd probably do the same.

i fear the day when people look back and wish more bands sounded like u2.

Damn, everyone must be very collectively bored...

...this wasnt a huge release that Apple hyped with a media event. They simply released another version of the same ipod they have had.

Ya, seriously.

What's the big deal? Posts about Bono and his charity efforts, and U2 being a bad band...? I thought this thread was about an iPod....a rereleased iPod at that...

Now, if this was hyped as a "big deal" then I guess there would be cause for complaint...but it's just a teeny tiny product release, whoopty do....not sure it's even front page news, let alone a long thread with a ton of angry posts....

nothing to see here, move on....

I give Bono more credit for doing something than you that just sit around on this forum and probably never helped anybody. That same applies for me as well.

He is guy with all the money in the world, that could easily sit around and spend his fortune and careless for anything else. instead he
is out there creating good music and helping others.

Some of you people are pathetic, and come on these forums simply to upset and cause trouble.

I'm a teenager, and I think theres a few U2 songs that are OK. I'm not anywhere near ''fan'' status.. I could name you 4 songs, if that?

If you don't like U2 and/or the U2 iPod - don't post. I'm not exactly jumping with glee that there's another U2 iPod - I'm not a fan myself.

Upsetting people isn't going to turn the U2 iPod into a Madonna, Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Video, whatever-pod.

The video iPod will be here in time - just wait.

And slagging off Bono for his eyewear isn't goin to speed up the process, either. Apple have chosen U2 for a purpose, and created the U2 iPod. I for one love it, not for U2, but for the colours, and its more readily available than a black and red one from say ColorWare.

Stop your bitchin' and whingin'.

you are so right, just thread is just so stupid by now.

i hate to be a music *******, but U2 is not a good band. very bland, mundane, and average. just because they've been around forever doesn't mean their music is good :/
