AFAIK, to qualify for this special thing AT&T is doing, you need to meet both of the following requirements:

1. have been an iPhone 3G "early adopter" (i.e. bought in Jul/Aug/Sep last year)
2. have a monthly bill of $99+/month

Which is retarded. They are once again going out of their way to divide their customer base. Either make it available for everyone; or no one. Another wonderful PR debacle they have gotten themselves into. I hope this gets as much press as their lack of availability of MMS/Tethering at launch...

Glad I got mine contract free...I'm headed to T-mobile.

So does this mean AT&T will wave the activation fee for any iPhone user upgrading? I (may) upgrade from the first gen; therefore, I was eligible to upgrade before this crazy new special iPhone deal. I'd be kind of annoyed if they didn't wave my $18.00 activation fee but are waving it for people that weren't originally eligible.

That's kind of BS though. It doesn't state that you had to be an early adopter in the press release. Just another sham job of customer service by wonderful AT&T. I think I may wait for Verizon to get the phone and get the heck out of dodge, because AT&T CS sucks donkey nads.
Which press release did you read?

All of that said, we’ve been listening to our customers. And since many of our iPhone 3G customers are early adopters and literally weeks shy of being upgrade eligible due to iPhone 3G S launching 11 months after iPhone 3G, we’re extending the window of upgrade eligibility for a limited time.

And, yes, switch to Verizon, where they don't even make exceptions for early adopters.

I'm on a family plan. None of us individually have more than $99 per month, I don't think. However, my line (the primary) is eligible now. My second iphone line is not.

I don't like the policy either (mostly because I don't spend $99+/month, so I'm waiting 18 months, not 12... :D), but AFAIK, every carrier lets their customers that spend the most upgrade earlier than others.

But yeah, it seems like AT&T is getting nothing but great PR from their announcement yesterday, even though the majority of iPhone customers don't qualify for it.

NOWHERE does it say it's a requirement to be an early adopter - so what did you read? It SAYS If you are upgrade eligible in July, August, September and are an iphone 3g owner you can upgrade now.

As usual - AT&T sucks donkey nads with customer service. They could have easily rectified this by adjusting my upgrade date and retained a customer for 2+ years. Instead now they really have me pissed off because they said one thing and won't stick with what they said.

Still nothing here.

I just orderd my 32gb white iPhone 3GS from apple.com for 299.99.....I bought my iPhone 3g on launch date of last year .....so it works!!!! Call *639# and if you are able to get the new pricing it will text you back saying "we offer you full upgrade pricing and we will wave the 18.00 activation fee!!!!

yep, thats what mine says

Its still 399/499 with 18 upgrade fee for me. Oh well, I guess I'll be paying 399 for a 16GB then. I got my 3G for 399 last year in August, and I'm not eligible for an upgrade until 4/2010.

That say in part:

We also currently offer early upgrade pricing only for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.

Can someone help me?

My iPhone bill a month is like $90 + Tax = $104 a month. I got the iPhone 3G July 18 and have been paying $100+ every month.

But it STILL says I'm not eligible until 12/19/2009.

Again - it doesn't say that's a requirement. All it says is our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible and eligible for upgrade in July, August, or September. It doesn't say that's a requirement it says many of our iphone 3g customers are early adopters. They need to get their crap straight.

Ok. $99 a month is for VOICE PLAN + DATA PLAN ONLY. Messaging Plans, additional features, etc.....doesn't count. It is just those two.

I'm in the same boat but my bill for the past year or so has been about $160 a month, and for the past 6 or so has never been below $130. Problem is, my voice plan is $59.99 and my data plan is $30.00, which is $89.99, above the $69 limit to get the 18 month upgrade (hence eligibility in December) but below the $99 dollar cutoff for 12 month upgrade. My $30 unlimited text messaging, and another $15 or so a month in international calling, plus an average of $30-$40 a month in international text message charges doesn't count.

I'm guessing you're in the same situation...your voice+data combo is above the $69 but below the $99, hence the December eligibility.

With the exception of the 5 of you that paid full price ($599/$699) for the iPhone 3G, the only other iPhone 3G customers that are "upgrade eligible in July, August, September" are the early adopters. So yes, boo on AT&T for not qualifying their statement to cover people like you. (You really paid $599/$699 for an iPhone 3G?!?!?!)

Seriously, if you forked out $599/$699 for an iPhone 3G in order to not reset your upgrade date from two years ago when you bought your original iPhone, I bet you that if you call AT&T, they'd change it from 7/28 to 6/19.

I didn't pay $699 - I got a deal on a refurb from them. I have called them. I spent an hour on hold being transferred to 5 different places before being told No and nothing they can do. We all know they could do something.

So AT&T sold you a $99/$149 iPhone 3G and didn't reset your original upgrade eligibility date from back when you bought your original iPhone in 2007?

If it makes you feel better, my iphone 2G is eligible for upgrade @$199/$299, but I have to pay the $18 fee (which is WAIVED for the 3G users!!), so screw that. Its not the $$, its the principle.

No - I bought a refurb that had no contract requirements. (It was a AT&T Premier thing). My upgrade date has always been 7/28/09.

I bought my 3G on launch day and it says I can't upgrade until March 2010. My bill is about $60/mo on the family plan. Otherwise it's $175/mo total.

Hey guys, im just curious if you think im able to get the 199/299 price.

When I check online at att.com it says my upgrade wont be till 12/29/09. But then I send the text to that number..and it says, "...full discount not available at this time, but you may qaulify on 8/6/09. We can offer you an iphone upgrade at a higher price with a 2yr commitment and 18 upgrade fee."

Sooo..does this mean I now qualify for that 199/299 price? I'm pretty sure im an early adopter(Not sure what that means). I bought the 3G August last year.

mine is still 399/499 and i got the phone july 11th, when it came out. My bill was 88 though, because of my school discount so that probably effects it.
