I ate a vegan diet for about six months. It was a lot of fun to see what can be done with tofu, temphe, etc.

The only odd thing about it is that after switching back to a more standard diet, I was lactose intolerant (definitely NOT an issue I had before). Cheese on a hamburger or a taco won't cause my any problems, but eating a piece of pizza with lots of hot, melted cheese (or drinking milk / eating ice cream) causes great pain.

No major issue -- I prefer rice ice cream to most regular ice creams .. just surprising to have that happened.

I was just about to reply to this thread and say you are crazy for going veggie because your body needs meat and you will slowly become ill without it but this post proves my point. THe body needs protein. You get sick without it. Be normal.

Oh thank goodness, I thought I was just getting sick from what you wrote - turns out I'm actually slowly becoming ill from lack of protein. I would really advise you to read up on this subject in order to be able to make a more valuable contribution to the discussion.

Cats are obligate carnivores. They will die without meat.

The OP, however, is most likely not a cat (or any other sort of obligate carnivore).

Therefore, the OP can get her protein from a plant based diet. Or a fungoidal diet. Or whatever other perfectly "normal" non-animal protein sources are available.

Tofu in pumpkin pie? Mmm ... heavy stomached proteiny deliciousness ...

Meat doesn't just supply protein. Its supplies iron among other NEEDED minerals. Plants don't. Go veggie, get sick, see doc, doc say eat meat. It will happen.

That is true. Me and the girlthing feed the cat meat, though we do not eat it. The cat LAUGHS at our compassion! Of course, she also eats bugs, so I'm not going to let her get to me with her gloating.

Curse you, cat! CUUUURSE YOUUUUU!!!!

You know, Popeye didn't get strong from a rib-eye every time he needed to kick some butt. Spinach and other plants are really high in iron.

Plus, you realize that the daily recommended dose of iron on the back of a can of spinach is actually based on what menstruating women need? Which is considerably higher than a healthy man or non-menstruating woman? Yeah.. again - read up on this first. Or, be friends with people who live breathe and teach nutrition - and are vegan. :D

I think I'd die if I became a vegetarian. Just because I hate veggies and love chicken too much. I'd just have nothing to eat! I suppose I could always live on bread and peanut butter? :D

Just curious, is meat disgusting or don't you guys eat it because you are sad the cows die for your hamburger? Plants are people too. Living creatures slaughtered for your good taste.

Well whatever the reason. I am going to outback tomorrow for a 9oz filet and I am going to love that thing until it comes out the back end. :D

Cheers.

I loove steak but try not to eat it too often due to the fat content. Ok this is a vegetarian thread better stop talking about meat. It would be interesting peoples motives behind vegetarianism though, whether it is diet or moral based

I am vegetarian for a week and a half. I just cut everything out at once. I've only had two crazy cravings (it was ll i could think about and I started drooling) for meet but those stopped. Probably TMI but there was some serious gassiness.

But im stuck I love my cheese. (is creamcheese cheese?) I cant see cutting it out maybe possibly in the future but as it stands now, nope.

Sorry to hijack a thread a bit but...

Where does Vegetarianism stop and Veganism(?) begin?

BTW: This was mostly a diet decision, that got reinforced by a documentary about animal cruelty in slaughter houses. "meet your meat" its called, its bit disturbing, and I woulnd't recommended squeamish persons to watch it.

It is 100% possible to obtain all of your needed vitamins, proteins, and amino acids from sources other than meat, but for some it may not be easy.

I recommend talking to a doctor or nutritionist before starting your meat-free diet, to ensure you'll be making healthy choices and receive your daily nutritional requirements.

Good Luck! :)

is cutting just beef out of ur diet a good way to lose weight

Depends on if you want to lose just weight or not gain muscle mass. It also depends on your exercise and diet habits. People will say whatever for works them. You gotta try things and see what works for you.

My point of view from my own dieting and exercise habits is I need my protein so beef will not be cut out. Cutting out either carbs/sugar or fat is a much better idea. Exercise in the morning is slightly more beneficial so that your body burns leftover carbs and mostly fat, assuming you exercise before breakfast. And personally, I find proteins important for cell repair and of course muscles, so meat is something I make sure to eat.

Cutting carbs or fat seem most effective. Your body first burns carbs, fat, then protein. So, take one out and you'll be left with protein for your muscles :D

Ok I got out my biology book (higher level high school or lower college level) and will be quoting a bit of it.
But first some some helpful info:
Proteins are amino acids which is what we uses.

"The key to being a healthy vegetarian is to eat a variety of plant foods that together supply sufficient quantities of all the essential amino acids. Simply by eating a combination of beans and corn, for example, vegetarians can get all the essential amino acids." Page 443, Biology Concepts and Connections, 5th edition.

Also a list of the essential amino acids.

Methionine
Valine
Histidine
Threonine
Phenylalanine
Leucine
Isoleucine
Tryptophan
Lysine

all but top one can be found in beans in sufficient amounts.
all but bottom two can be found in corn in sufficient amounts.

people have canine teeth for a reason... to tear meat apart so your tummy can digest it. thats why cows have flat teeth, and humans have pointy ones.

We also have flat teeth for vegetables. Heck, just counting with my tongue, I have many more flat teeth than pointy. My flat gnashy teeth (in the front.. don't know what to call 'em) bite into carrots and my delicious salad.

Sure, pointy teeth were good in the past, when Thag and Thagella had to slay a mastadon to get enough protein for the tribe, but now with agriculture and the like, we can produce more food per square foot using vegetables and fruits, thus feeding more people. (source, click on the 7-times more land part). It's no longer completely necessary to eat meat to sustain good health. We can feed more people with a smaller footprint.

There is also a reason we have science. It tells us information thats proven to be wright. Also we have way more grinding the fibers of vegetables (back teeth <insert technical name>) and front, as Katie said, than we do the 4 or (possibly) 8 canine teeth. My cat has (looks at bloody holes in hand) all canine teeth.

Also meat doesn't get digested till its in the small intestine.

Yeah but meat tastes good on the barbie, veggies don't. Potatoes aside. :D

Hmm thats a matter of opinion that varies from person to person . I personally like a grilled mushroom sandwich more than a hamburger. I also like to eat feta cheese by itself in comparison nobody I know does, and I hate remotely salty food and my step-father salts to a point where you can see the mountain across the table.
