Your objections to Touch ID remind me of the same objections I heard from folks who were complaining about online banking and online bill pay 10 or so years ago. They would say things like "I have no problem writing a check and putting it in the mail" and "I just don't trust this online stuff".

Fast forward 10 years and every single person I knew 10 years ago who adamant that online bill pay was not safe and was completely unnecessary now has a smartphone with an app for their bank installed and they do mobile banking and mobile bill pay all the time now.

How long till we get this on Macs ? :)

I can't wait for this -- I hope, that if it is on the keyboard, that the wired full-size keyboard gets an update with it and doesn't just disappear of the face of the planet. I've been glad to see that it has been kept around this long. I hate wireless keyboard lag.

I haven't read the article nor a single comment in this thread, but based on the title "New Video Explores Possibility of Touch ID in Fifth-Generation iPad" my reply is:

No ******, Sherlock.

Rumours about touch ID making it to the iPad are pointless as this is a complete given.

Edit: How funny that typing "**[t]" causes this forum to replace it with "******". Even censoring a profanity is censored.

Dude calm down. It's just a video. No need to be harsh.

Fingerprint sensors on the magic mouse anyone???

I was wondering where they would put it on a Mac. Magic Mouse MAYBE. WHAT ABOUT THE MACBOOKS!?

I hate the lack of a number keypad on the wireless!

A new video that explores the possibility of a Touch ID fingerprint sensor on the fifth-generation iPad has been released on YouTube channel Unbox Therapy.

In the video, the purported front panel of the fifth-generation iPad is compared to a home button with a fingerprint sensor removed from the iPhone 5s and a home button removed from a standard iPhone.

The standard home button does not appear to fit inside the casing of the iPad 5, while the smaller home button equipped with a fingerprint sensor does indeed fit. While this is not concrete evidence by any means, it does suggest that the fifth-generation iPad is potentially able to support the Touch ID hardware.

A major caveat, however, is that Apple's fifth-generation iPad is expected to take design cues from the iPad mini. The current iPad mini has a home button that is smaller than the home button found in the iPhone 5, which could also explain the home button sizing differences found in the fourth-generation iPad and the shell of the iPad 5. Apple has implemented home button changes in the past, slightly shrinking the home button size of the iPhone 5 compared to the iPhone 4s.

There has been some prior evidence that the next generation iPads could come equipped with the same fingerprint sensor found in the iPhone 5s. Last week, an image leaked that appeared to show a fully-assembled next generation iPad mini in gold with a fingerprint sensor, though it was unclear whether the image was real or rendered.

Apple is expected to unveil the fifth-generation iPad alongside the second-generation iPad mini at an upcoming media event that could take place in late October. The second-generation iPad mini, which could be in short supply, will come equipped with a Retina screen while the fifth-generation iPad will take on a slimmer iPad mini-style design.

WOW the NSA really loves new technology and fingerprints from Apple's servers. :)

What can the NSA do with your fingerprint? If you commit a crime, and leave your prints, I guess that sucks for you? Other than pinning you to a crime, what can prints let them do? I'd rather they have my prints than my web searches!

You people that keep screaming NSA are hilarious. Sad, but hilarious.

They do notttttt care about your sedentary, mediocre underachieving lives. Ok?

Your fingerprint means NOTHING to Apple.

There is no point trying to reason with these people because they have already made up their minds. I am very confident that the majority of the public will accept the limited security risks of the fingerprint scanner when weighed against its convenience. It amazes my that people are so concerned by a fingerprint scanner when it is so easy for someone to still your identity with just your social security number. This has happened to a couple of my relatives who never do anything online and use primarily cash in all of their financial transactions. Complex passwords did jack for me with regards to financial security. I am always extremely careful when making any sort of financial transactions online. But did that stop the thieves...NO. Thieves essentially stole my credit card number when I used it at a retail store (Target & Walmart) and duplicated the card. It's already happened twice.

Sensor ID should only be offered as an option.

I don't trust this technology that gathers biometric data. Currently we have no idea or control on what apps do with our data. Apple shows little interest in providing consumers protections against potential data theft, unless someone like Senator Al Franken brings pressure to bear.

We've already seen that some apps would clandestinely transmit contacts and location data to third party sites without users' permission.

We also KNOW that Apple has been sending our data to the NSA.

Sure, Apple assures us that fingerprint data is not stored or sent to the cloud, etc. That and a dollar will buy you a cup of coffee.

I don't want or need a sensor ID.

Amusing considering the Jetsons is your avatar pic!

As for the iPad 5 having a Sensor ID... I don't know. I hope so, but my gut says no. Hope my gut is wrong!

Why would anyone think new iPads wouldn't get a fingerprint sensor? Of course they will.

That's not always a guarantee. I remember years ago I was waiting for a camera on the 3rd gen iPod touches, and I thought they definitely would have one, but there wasn't one. Apple likes to save features for next generations just to get people to buy the latest tablet or phone.

What year is it? Oh right, 2013. Apple has come a long way since the contacts fiasco (Fixed in iOS 5 I believe, two years ago now), if you owned a current iOS device I am sure you have seen the OS level alerts that show up if an app requests location, contacts, calendars, reminders, passbook, photos, bluetooth, microphone and even the motion sensor.

They are never going to find images of fingerprints stored on the A7 because they don't exist. If they did exist Apple would crumble under the backlash. And if they did exist we will be seeing them coming to light very soon.

And if we ignore all that still, what will the NSA do with your fingerprint that they can't already do better knowing your location and all your communication from your phone in the first place? Maybe we should have phones that don't connect to cell towers, they could be monitored!

I could've told him that and I didn't need to dissect an iPhone 5S for it.

I am concerned about privacy. Just not at the same level as you are. Not at a level that will stop me from using technology.

There are so many ways that your privacy can be compromised, ideas like `Apple may not be telling you they are taking your fingerprints but they still may be` are a little out of a tin foil!

If you are that concerned about it, you need more technology, not less, so you can communicate with the right people to get to the root cause.

All I asked is that the fingerprint sensor be an OPTION.

Maybe I misunderstood Touch ID, but I thought you could turn it off so that you could just use a PIN/password to unlock your device the same as before?

As for me, I believe I had to provide my fingerprints when applying for a U.S. Passport years ago and I think it's pretty likely that the NSA already has access to that data.

Even more so - every time ive been to the US they take my finger prints. Lately, so many countries do this on entry, take a photo of my face. They get a lot of information from my passport too.

Love how this guy had to say "Dissect my iPhone 5S... in Gold!"

I'm guessing you spend too much of your time being irritated by trivial things.
Am I irritating you right now? I'm guessing that I am. You'll probably live a longer, happier life if you "don't sweat the small stuff". P.S...Please don't bother to reply that I was irritated by your post and that is why I responded. I responded because I could see you were in pain and I like to be helpful to others when I have the opportunity. Have a nice day. :)

It is...
If Apple makes the sensor ID a standard feature on every new iPad then it would NOT be an option.

What's so hard to understand about this?

The idea that we don't have to use it does not make it an option - the hardware would STILL have the sensor ID.

Why record a worthless fingerprint when the iToy could simply record the keystrokes as you enter one of your 49 passwords, and then send them to to You Know Who!
