The thinner edges on the iPad mini were possible because you can hold your hand behind and grip both edges.

This won't be possible on a 10" iPad except for massive-handed-people, so losing the edge is going to make this thing hard to hold without having your fingers on the screen.

The Point is iOS has now a better touch detection. It realizes if you use the finger or touch the screen because you are holding it.
Therefore it is ok to remove the side bezel. Without that specific iOS feature no bezel would be bad.

I wonder if this guy is gonna get done for handling stolen goods?

Or paid a nice sized check from Apple for introducing the 'new' form factor in a discreet/social/youtube/covert sort o' way? Lots of competition on the market right now---nothing like whetting our appetites and surely with the passion folks have shown from the 'mini' design, anyone considering a tablet this fall---and for school, kind of a cool way to get the 'tease' out there. Nothing about function, the guts, the stuff we @ MR are curious about:)

This is the irritating part! We all know for a fact what its going to look like. We have enough renderings, schematcis and a whole lot of pictures (fake or real) to attest that. There has been so many leaks, all of the same thing. Nothing which talks about internal specifications, camera, colours, new features, nothing substanial. Kind of weird! maybe the iPhone launch will give us some insight.

My guess---the 'housing' or the case as we see here, even the product in full dress is what Apple wants us to see (see my above response). Apple is fully aware how much WE want to know about the A7 the GPU, the RAM, the 'new' display technology (if it so exists), energy/battery---speed increases, weight decreases...et al.

I guess I feel the HAVE doubled down on secrecy. The 'guts'---or what is going to actually set this redesign apart from the 3/4 is only half the equation. The other half...that WE are interested in remains secret for a reason (and are manufactured by companies with much stricter control and guidelines as far as bringing your camera to work:))

You make a good point. It might make sense to let case components leak to get people excited about the new design. The cosmetics are what people get excited about (see iPhone S grumblings). Keep the internals secret because that's their ace, that's what they play down but secretly rely upon.

I'm with you---110%

If all they did was radically upgrade the camera and made the next iPad less "bulky" then I think it'd make a nice upgrade for my iPad 2. There never was a compelling reason to shell out another $1k for a tablet.

I do wish Apple would update the Speakers on all their devices - the speaker quality on the MBP, iMac, iPad and iPhone are horrendous.

Not much you can do with speakers in such a thin, light device. They're made to enjoy most with a set of good cans. It does look like they may be going to stereo speakers in this case---that'll improve the sound somewhat;) But it's tough, impossible actually---to create decent sound from such a device. Speakers need 'air' to move and to sound good...it's a physics thing;)

That's ridiculous. By comparison against any other tablet I've seen, the current iPad is still the sharpest. While I agree that DVD's should go with the dodo, there is nothing so egregious about the current full-size iPad design that it should be called "garbage dated."

It's a sign of the demographic split on this board I think. As a 42 year old, I still 'feel' young...but I've gone from playing vinyl and no computers, no cell phones to today's technology. I'm still amazed, and I've owned the original iPad version since release---what we've available for transport so easily, in such a small compact package---whether it be our smart phone or tablets, I'm really happy to be part of this era...and to be 'tuned in' to all of the intricacies. As I, too, am looking forward to the new GPU/CPU SOC---A7/A7x, the RAM, Wireless A/C, the list goes on forever, not to mention iOS 7!

Why would they pay him anything? It belongs to them anyway.

iOS or hardware? My iPad 3 (iOS6) is sensitive as heck, esp. scrolling in Safari something is always opening that I didn't intend to open.

The iPad went on a diet and it looks much smaller. Nice form factor change. If not for the iPad Mini this would sell like crazy. It will still sell a lot but I'd bet the retina Mini will outsell it by a wide margin.

So, I am hoping that they will not overlook or hobble the mini, just to give it [iPad 5] a head start.

Yes, it belongs to them. A very strong case was made why they would do it: to wet our appetites. To get a buzz going!

Do I assume that the new iPad is yet again going to trail the new iPhone and not have the fingerprint unlocking feature?

We can't say for sure yet. It could just be sticking it's stomach in and scrunching it's shoulders. Conceivably weight could be same or feel the same.

True, hopefully it's not just a nice new suit to hide its gut :D I'm sure it's lost a few grams. Apple loves to talk about weight loss ;)

Hurry up and tell the apple engineers. I'm sure none of them thought about it until you came up with it...

Probably because its a lot easier for Apple to control details that are close to home, rather than machined parts that need to be mass-assembled in the millions months in advance thousands of miles away from headquarters.

People complaining about leaks, throughout Apples history they've never confronted having to assemble and manufacture millions upon millions of devices in preparation for launch day. Which obviously needs to be done months ahead of launch. This is why we see parts from the manufacturing leak these days. Because its simply impossible to contain these things with a workforce of half a million.

When Steve was around, they simply never had a ramp-up as aggressive and as early as Apple has to do these days in order to accomodate demand.

Looks good.

For me to switch back from the mini, it also needs to be lighter and charge faster. No noticeable heat would be a nice-to-have.

But for me, the weight and the fact it took so long to charge were the reasons for change.

I'm looking forward to the event on the 10th. Let's hope Apple has some nice surprises for us too.

Forum Video?

Weird - I checked out the video just fine. However, when I clicked into the comments, the video is now a flash video that I cannot play on my MBP. What's up with that?

Interesting that the (purported) thickness is essentially the same as that of the iPad 4th gen, but with more squared-off edges. Assuming a similar density to the iPad 4, and the width being reduced from 18.5cm to 17cm, then perhaps the weight will only drop by the same ratio - (17/18.5) x 652g = 600g.

With the way the sides are tapered I would think it will not drop that much due to the width (and possible wasted space in the tapered area).

But, I thought it looked a bit thinner. It's hard to tell with the tapered sides. I wished used calipers to measure or he'd set them flat on the table and laid a ruler across so we could see how it tilted.
