It will definitely be interesting to see the inevitable teardowns next week and get a look at the sizes for the main board, batteries, cooling design, etc.…I’m thinking they could have found a way to fit the extra ports in and still employ a sharper/tapered bottom if ports were the only issue. I don’t really have a need for the ports (I have a dongle I like for the rare instances I need HDMI, and I need both SD and CF-Express card readers so I’m still bringing an external reader), but I recognize that these are on the desired-features list for quite a few people.Have to imagine it was partly due to ports and just changing up the design for the sake of design. The latter seems unlike Apple but say that because of the design feeling non progressive to me.
The problem is that there's no 15" or 16" Macbook Air. I don't need a pro laptop, but I do want a bigger screen.
People with specific needs should not be interested in Apple products to begin with because their nomenclature is too limited. Just go with Windows and you will have thousands of options. You will always find what you need. Some people just need a 16inch but with the performance of M1, which is still more than fast enough for most non GPU intensive work.
Yeah guess for my use case, was wishing the 14” was a bit more portable that I thought the new silicon would allow, while still having brilliant performance. SD i can understand with cameras, drones, go pros etc even though cf-express is becoming more prevalent, but baffled by need for hdmi.It will definitely be interesting to see the inevitable teardowns next week and get a look at the sizes for the main board, batteries, cooling design, etc.…I’m thinking they could have found a way to fit the extra ports in and still employ a sharper/tapered bottom if ports were the only issue. I doubt either HDMI or SD affected MBPs weight or thicknesses at all. New M1s are very big chips. Battery and cooling is what most likely determined the size of these models.Yeah guess for my use case, was wishing the 14” was a bit more portable that I thought the new silicon would allow, while still having brilliant performance. It seems like the HDMI need is largely showing up at customer sites and needing to connect to projectors or large screens via HDMI. The 14”/16” decision has been a struggle for me, trading off the relative value of more portability vs more screen real estate (especially considering how nice the new displays are). I guess I can blame Apple for putting so much capability into a 14” platform that now it’s a choice to be considered.Yeah guess for my use case, was wishing the 14” was a bit more portable that I thought the new silicon would allow, while still having brilliant performance. They may simply add another thunderbolt 4 instead of an outdated HDMI 2.0They had to make it thicker to add ports, where else would they put the ports? Just saying.
Yeah I debate the same. To me the 15” was a nice sweet spot, but having played with the intel 16”, found it too bulky and heavy for travel. So could only imagine what this new one will feel like. I like having as much power as possible for editing, 3D rendering, but may have to consider to see what the new airs end up being like.It seems like the HDMI need is largely showing up at customer sites and needing to connect to projectors or large screens via HDMI. And the QUALITY of the screen!Exactly my situation. Don't need the juice but want the screen.
Half a pound is essentially nothing even for a disabled person. They're equally portable.Except the new one is half a pound heavier
Irrelevant? Hardly....
Your opinion, but most beautiful design you've ever seen, really?
Outdated and irrelevent seem to be 2 of your favourite words ... did you learn them today?
What? Haha. That's the worse take I think I've ever read on this site! And that's saying something considering we are on MRs!People with specific needs should not be interested in Apple products to begin with because their nomenclature is too limited. I can, but I mentioned that because the things I do work fine on my current MacBook Pro and don't really warrant an upgrade. What's holding me back is compatibility with x86 virtual machines at the moment. Why can’t you archive videos with Apple Silicon?
That's due to beveled design of the older version.
Exactly fanboys, there’s no real criticism here.That... doesn't relate at all to what I'm responding to? (And I really don't care about the notch. Every design has its considerations, and I think on balance I'd rather have a well-positioned or better webcam than a smaller bezel and worse, as is the tradeoff that Dell has made or makes now. You're literally sacrificing no screen real estate compared to previous MacBook screens even with the notch. It makes very little sense to me to complain about it.)
The irony of you complaining about MacRumors as a whole as fanboys while posting on MacRumors seems a bit more strong to me.
One could argue Apple users are full of people with specific needs, especially when it comes to computers, given the software and features that are only available on macOS.People with specific needs should not be interested in Apple products to begin with because their nomenclature is too limited. Not saying the new ones are bad, just that a lot of people would probably not need that extra power and just want a larger screen. There are plenty of devs I know who has always bought the 15”/16” screen for the screen when the power in the 13” would have been enough.Which is fine but a machine like that isnt in Apple’s lineup right now, doesnt make the new macbook pros bad, just means your use case isnt represented. It’s not like this is new, there never was a 16” iBook to step up from the 14” and complement the 17” powerbook for example
There is at least an order of magnitude more software and hardware on Windows than what's offered by Apple. Most of it is not available on macOS.One could argue Apple users are full of people with specific needs, especially when it comes to computers, given the software and features that are only available on macOS.

Maybe get a mbp air?! LolOne of the most important factors for me with a laptop is size and weight.
If I didn’t take it anywhere then I’d get an iMac.
This new MBP is way too big for my liking.
L shaped MagSafe is the 1st generation MagSafe. im using it right now on my 2012 MacBook pro 15 non-retina. i think its much better than the straight design here.I wish the Magsafe 3 port was the L-shaped type, like the second generation. Hopefully we'll have third-party options.
