L shaped MagSafe is the 1st generation MagSafe. im using it right now on my 2012 MacBook pro 15 non-retina. i think its much better than the straight design here.
You are right. I'm also typing this reply on a mid-2012 Unibody (non-retina) Macbook Pro. I just got threw off by the following quote from Wikipedia about the original MagSafe port "MagSafe has connector pins that are designed so the rectangular connector can be inserted in either orientation. Originally the connector was T-shaped, with the cable directed straight out; later it became L-shaped, with the cable directed along the side of the computer, but still capable of being inserted in either orientation..."

Why not put all that connectivity in a sleek peripheral, that plugs in via USB-c, so we can have all the upgraded power and pixels without the upgraded thickness. I’m sure Apple could come up with an elegant solution for such a add-on device. For peeps who use it as a desktop, it’s just part of cable array you have anyway, and for people on the go, nice and simple to carry.

Because the single USB-C 12” MacBook was neat, but the lack of ports was the opposite of “the bee’s knees”.

Having an HDMI port on our fleet macs is going to be a godsend.

Yeah guess for my use case, was wishing the 14” was a bit more portable that I thought the new silicon would allow, while still having brilliant performance. SD i can understand with cameras, drones, go pros etc even though cf-express is becoming more prevalent, but baffled by need for hdmi.
Conference rooms all over the world are full of HDMI connectors, except for the ones that have, God help us, VGA connectors with separate 3.5 mm audio plugs.

Sounds like you're reasonably happy with whatever macOS setup you have if you can wait 3 years. For people who are inclined to upgrade sooner, year(s) of waiting for Face ID on a MacBook is a lot of wait little gain IMO. Particularly because macOS can unlock a Mac with Apple Watch, if you're wearing the watch, and configured that feature. With that setup, you're logged-in pretty fast after waking the locked Mac. For me, that obviates Face ID's most frequently needed convenience. And for considerably rarer online purchases and authenticating to other clients, the new MBP line has Touch ID. That probably isn't a big hassle if you're not doing it every time you sit down. Also, if you have an Apple Watch, macOS lets you use the watch to authenticate Apple Pay transactions, but even that's too much trouble compared to one's thumb on the MBP for a moment when buying something. Beats pulling a credit card out of the wallet (such as when buying more Apple equipment ;-) )
I currently have an M1 MacBook Pro. So, its doing all I need so far. I would love the 16 inch for its bigger screen and nothing else and maybe a few of the ports. But, I have an external monitor connected and its stationary most of the time anyway. Also, with my job, I am rarely in need of a Mac since I work in a Windows centric environment.

Is no one else seeing how janky the back of the device is. The lid and hinge are not flush with the top case. It looks unfinished and almost bent out of shape. It's noticeable on a number of unboxing. I hope to God mine isn't like that, although I suspect it will be...?!
Maybe it's due to the internal screen protection foil than you then remove?

As much as those figures are correct, I can't understand it. It looks waaaaaay thicker

Really the biggest culprit is the base, which isn’t tapered at the edges this time, to give the illusion of it being thinner than it actually is.

Overall, I actually rather like the design, it has a bit of a retro, PowerBook G4 vibe going on, and I loved (actually, still do) that laptop.

Besides, I’ll spend my time looking at that lovely screen, not staring at its profile all day long :D

I wish the Magsafe 3 port was the L-shaped type, like the second generation. Hopefully we'll have third-party options.
No supported third party options as Apple’s never licensed their MagSafe laptop chargers. If there’s a market for it, though, I’m sure someone will make an Amazon knockoff :)

Most of the ones I’ve been in for the past few years (well not this PAST year of course :) connect wirelessly, no cables at all.

I am very excited to get this new MBP!! I sold my m1 13" in the summer in anticipation. The cost jump is rather significant and a little hard to swallow. That is about my only complaint. I have been wanting a more powerful smaller Macbook. I always felt the 13.3" was too small but 15.6 or larger becomes too bulky. The 14" with slim bezels seems to be a big improvement in terms of screen real estate. I was on the fence though because bigger screen is better and cost is almost the same between the 14 and 16 inch models depending on configuration. I always hated Apple thermal cooling systems in laptops as I felt they were very inadequate. This is the first time I am excited by the overwhelming raw power advantage to Apple silicon in many, many years going all the way back to power pc. Back then Intel had a pretty big advantage and is why eventually Apple gave in and went with Intel of Power PC. Now Apple silicon is unquestionably better than the competition and this is a true first gen device as last years 13.3 m1 was not a true redesign but a stop gap. From leaked geekbench results the m1 pro scores about the same as the m1 on single core which makes sense although I thought the M1 pro was slightly higher clocked than the M1? The multi core scores are in the M1 pro are in the 12000 range where as the M1 had a respectable 7500. Apple measured performance against a MSI gaming rig and it was not close. Obviously GPU performance is the real question. Leaked GPU benchmarks have not been that impressive but comparing to integrated Intel GPU a big step up but compared to Nvidia 3080rtx 8gb the M1x with 32 GPU cores may get close but won't beat Nvidia. However, when you compare thermal profiles and wattage consumption Apple silicon destroys Nvidia and Intel by using about half the power under load. I imagine that because of the thermal advantages to Apple silicon and a completely integrated system that there will be little throttling which may make the differences at the high end mute since the Intel/Nvidia solution under load will get very hot and possibly throttle even with decent cooling. It is going to be very interesting to see how the new Macs perform in the real world.

I am so happy Apple has changed it's design philosophy. My iPhone 13 pro max is huge and has a huge battery and lasts a long time. The new Macbook Pro's are bigger and thank God!! The idea that all devices have to be as small as possible is a bad design philosophy. When you are talking pro devices you are usually talking about power users who want as much possible performance and prioritize performance over size. This is not to say we want an ugly huge device but rather if you need an extra millimetre or two here or there to vastly improve heat dissipation or increased performance or features we are happy to add the extra size. It finally seems that Apple is getting this concept. We want a pretty device but we also want one that can kick ass and kick ass is more important to power users. If you want small and slim then the new Air Macbook should be perfect. I don't even mind the notch although I would have really liked to see face ID.

LOLing at all the posts talking about how it's gained weight... For the past 4 years people bemoaning how Apple focuses on "thinness" over battery size/performance and now the opposite, "it's too fat". It's like a bunch of children, never happy with what's for dinner no matter what you give them... WAHHHHHH ??

It's also gotten quite thick and big. Irrelevant when used as a pseudo-desktop. But for people who actually take it out every day, I honestly find it too big and too thick compared the 15 and 16"ers of yesteryear.
Odd opinion. I was wondering if it would fit in a case I got long ago for a 2012 Retina 15” MBP (the case is a Tom Bihn Brain Cell, no longer made), and it turns out the sizes of the two machines, 2012 and 2021 are within an eighth of an inch in all three dimensions (HxWxD), so it’ll fit in the case just fine. And that’s definitely a 15” MBP of yesteryear. What application do you have where you cannot possibly tolerate the less than 1/8” difference?

If size is that much more important than capacities and ports, the M1 MB Air is probably the machine for you. If not, there will probably be a lot of those acceptably thin 15 and 16”ers or yesteryear all going up for sale shortly.

Got a hold of mine too. Just wish I had such a nice tablecloth.
Not that far off from this new model.

That is quite thicker than before. Still looking forward to receiving but wow.

You have to realize though the gap you see between the 2 computers is part of the thickness for the top computer. It’s tapered so you can’t fully see the bottom of the top computer. It gives an illusion of ultra thinness when in fact it’s just about as thick as the bottom computer.

What counts is the height when put on the table next to each other. Open or closed the difference is quite noticeable.

Illusion is important. A lot of people very much want this illusion.:)
Understood. I’ve been on this forum for years and years and that wasn’t the song and dance people were singing just a few short years ago when ports went missing and keyboards were being made thinner.

People were shouting from the rooftop to make a “Pro” computer that is actually able to be a “Pro” computer and to stop making thinner computers at the sake of usability.

Now we have people comparing those crap thin machines against a true “Pro” machine, so it doesn’t surprise me that now people want illusions instead.

Excellent design all around…love it! Gone are the days of Apple making them so thin as to be almost useless. If I wanted a thin computer I’d buy an Air.

Absolutely love the design! Wish the video would’ve showed the air intake and exhaust ports underneath.

Thank you Apple for taking more of my $$$

I don't think designing them thin like the 2016 -2020 MBP was the issue. The issue was the terrible over heating and jet-engine max-fan spin up caused by the Intel Core-i5/i7's

I actually just about a dual core 2017 3.5Ghz i7 MBP 13" model as I need a Mac right today to further avoid using a work PC for personal needs. No M1 2020 MBP was available in my area today at a decent pre-owned price.

I'm on the fence on the 14" design not what I expected, but will have to see it up close. If the 2020 MBA debuts before April and rumours keep us up to date I may just get that instead if the M cpu is 10-core, GPU is 16-core and has dual 4K external display support and 2 TB4 ports + MagSafe. I just don't know at this point.
