Running out of superlatives so I've borrowed some from the iPhone'7' September launch.

Brilliant, fantastic, awesome, wonderful, incredible, absolutely amazing, just brilliant.

The absence of a headphone jack would make a lot more sense if the iPhone were to charge wirelessly. is that to much to hope for? Yup, it probably is.
So far wireless charging has not really solved a problem. When my phone is plugged in to charge, I can hold it in my hand and use it. On 'wireless' chargers the phones are sitting on a charger, making them much harder to use. For bedside charging whilst sleeping the 'wireless' chargers look quite good, but they don't really make life any easier.

Everybody knows Apple is trying to squeeze as much profits as they can. Not saying that's bad. But I wish they would do something big like when the 4 was released.
I haven't been excited about new iPhones in a long time.

I get your point but logically speaking- here is what to expect on this release

A10 (faster, obviously)
Camera (same megapixels/better quality?)
No headjack (not a feature to me)
RAM (same 2GB)
LTE/WIFI chip (same/maybe theoretical faster?)
Casing (same/removing of antenna lines)
Thinner (maybe/who is asking for this?)

Btw- I am not saying it won't sale - it will easily top the 74M sold last year

If you have a 5/5c/5s/6 - it would be a great upgrade - for those of us in the forum that upgrade yearly - this doesn't look like a very attractive upgrade.

I may be in the minority, but I for one hope there is as I really do not want to have to start having to use an adaptor, nor have any intention of replacing my current headphones that work with a very convenient, up until now, almost universally adopted connector type.

I'm not convinced you are in the minority. Perhaps Apple will make a compelling case for why they remove it, and nearly everyone will think it's a great idea once they explain their thinking. But I am doubtful of that scenario. I think we've heard the argument for it, and it is of no real benefit to any user, only to Apple and their MFi licensees.

Can someone explain why Apple wouldn't wait until an all new design to remove the headphone jack?

I can't explain, but I can speculate. It could be to bury the bad news in the model they don't care about too much anyway, then next time it won't be news anymore. If they're expecting criticism for this model regardless, might as well get it out of the way now.

Looks pretty much the same phone with one less connection

The phone's capabilities are far, far more important than the shape of the case.

I'd hoped that people would understand that just because the outside looks similar has zero bearing on what's happening inside.

Perhaps I overestimated peoples' ability to work these things out, though.

Less pain. We have an entire year to adapt and for companies to make new headphones.

Then next year when the 10 year anniversary iPhone hits, nobody will care about the headphone jack.

I'll only buy if I can use my Apple Watch charger to charge my iPhone while listening to music without being forced to buy wireless headphones.
If they dont have a clever way to simultaneously handle charging and headphone use, and a way to keep using my current expensive earphones with a sleek and NOT bulky adapter included, I will probably just get a 6s and wait for the 7s.

I think this is the real deal, folks.

I, for one, am looking forward to speaker improvements, and especially improvements involving the camera. iPhone photographers and cinematographers rejoice!

When considering the design, I don't believe we need big changes. The stronger metals introduced in the 6s series make sense for mobile devices we carry around with us all day. The antenna lines are less intrusive in these photos and this video. This is as much as I'd hope for, especially year-over-year.

Due to a subtle change in design, though, I don't think Apple will name this iteration iPhone 7. Perhaps something in addition to the '6' and '6s' monikers.

I will agree with you if the sound quality stays the same.

If though, there is a huge improvement in the sound quality, then the new headphone port would be good.
What Apple will NOT tell you is the crappiest headphones you can find with a 3.5mm plug will reproduce music at any bitrate up to the maximum 24bit/192khz as long as the source material and DAC support it.

Couldn't they have gone with USB-C for the headphones/charging since the Macs are already using it? IDK much about the specifics of connectors. There isn't much of a size difference. I still haven't seen a good reason for the whole headphone jack scandal.

You could be right. e.g.:

iPhone 6S Pro
iPhone 6T
iPhone 6.5S
iPhone 6Sthetically Similar
iPhone 6ST with STero souND for people with tiny heads
