^For a workaround, I changed my location in Settings to "United States" years ago and the News app has worked for me ever since.

Yeah i know about that workaround, it worked for iTunes Radio as well, but I don't want to do that and other things perhaps not work correctly, so I just don't use it.

Great another Apple choice that excludes half of America. Not surprised.
The exlusion happens when YOU choose to only read news sources which's known bias you gravitate towards.

Both lefties and righties and anyone else really should know that BOTH sides leave out important bits all the time to make their spin seem consistently superior.

If you only read one side you're doing yourself a disfavor.

Keep in mind that not a single source should be expected to be truly objective or neutral, everyone spins, if just because editors and writers are humans. Doesn't even have to be an active attempt to leave out something.

If you think a barebones aggregator without editing is a better solution Google News might be more your cup of tea, but then make a wise selection of whose editing and investigation you are willing to trust regardless.

In the end however, you are a free person and hence it's perfectly okay to create an idealogical bubble and never step out. However, the question is: are you doing yourself a favor there?

I wonder if they plan to start their own reporting, why else would they create an Editor-In-Chief position?
I'd love to see Apple start a Beats music station for news. Non-partisan, well-researched news.

I cant remember where I heard it, maybe Nilay at the verge or someone else but Apple News is massive.
I think a lot of sites are getting a huge percentage of their views through that one source. It's a bit of a sleeper hit really.

Which stands to reason. Anyone normal person who wants to know whats going on is most likely to use the big icon that says NEWS on the first page of the their screen on their shiny new phone. And they'll trust it far more than Facebook etc.. because its actually got the big newspaper brands logos on each news piece.

I suppose id rather trust apple to make sure the service is good and honest than if Facebook or google do it because at the end of the day apple are about selling hardware. So they really just want a tool that helps them do that. So i suppose this editor is their for that reason. Should be good for everybody's really.

In the era of Fake News, this could be just one more source of disinformation.

Finding real news is hard today, so hopefully this won't happen here.
What's fake? I can usually verify everything across multiple sources. I went deliberately looking for fake news sites once and found that even the highly accused sites usually don't tell lies but just have misleading wording and clickbait titles.

I don't use Apple News but how can it be biased one way or the other when users decide what content shows in their feed?
The defaults can be biased. It seemed like I got a good mix by default, though. And I think it's alright as long as I see at least one source for each point of view for any given story so that all the facts are covered.

I'm loving Apple News. I save all the stories I want to read and get to them when I have time. By adding the sites I mainly visit, I've found that my news stream is pretty personalized.
Agreed, it's really good. Seems about as good as Google News but with a much nicer interface. It's my go-to app for killing time, though I've switched to reading a PDF of Armenian language on the subway.

There's a really simple solution, which is to stop watching news altogether. Try if for two weeks, and discover how your life is suddenly a lot better because you're thinking less about that horrible event faraway you can't actually do anything about

Here's how news works:
- You get one of two positions to invest yourself in, and endless articles, talking points, TV shows, whatnot about these two positions. Wanna choose blue or red?
- You are being told what to think about, and you follow it like sheep, trying to take one of the prefabricated positions.

All this may sound far-fetched, but it's totally obvious if you take a break from the news even for a week.

What I see is people excitedly discussing, arguing, even shouting about "issue X". Whatever it may be. It's huge! It's important! Everyone thinks about it! Then, two weeks later, they excitedly discuss, argue, shout about "Issue Y". If I ask about issue X, everyone's already totally forgotten about that. No one cares.

Look at the headlines from 2 weeks ago - who still cares about them? No one.

In addition, nobody took any actions. So all this was mental masturbation. Nothing happened, except another week went by where you were thinking about what they told you to think about. And your life is passing by....

Does Facebook itself present news? I've only ever seen news articles posted by friends or notifications where a friend liked something.

Finding real news is easy. ...if you stick to the peer reviewed science journals. Hundreds of new things are discovered every day, and thousands of new things are invented. This is actually what is new in the world. The formal science press worked out decades ago how to present objectivity, subjectivity and even wild speculation, by being up front about what is which, and even publishing calculated error bars on the data in the margins. There is a real mechanism at work there for relaying/discerning quality information.

Social news centering around human drama is purely subjective, and always has been. That's less of a problem than a culture of people who are so self-assured in their righteousness they attach themselves to the first thought they have about anything and fight off any other data or view of it as "fake". The internet, for all its usefulness, enables and encourages people to spend all day in their own bubbles, and as it turns out, a great many prefer that, telling each other what they want to hear all day long in these little ideological tribes of their own making. It's safe and comfortable, in a world hostile to their bad ideas. On the plus side, it does make them easy to manipulate and sell to, and that's what makes this country tick.

No I don't think it does directly. But so many people get their "news" from Facebook via links that it's probably the no.1 new source for most people, even if they don't realize it.

Facebook were doing their equivalent of Googles AMP thing where they publish content for web sites but I don't think publishers are happy with it.

On the other hand publishers are very happy with Apple news from what I remember.

I mean, if I go on Facebook's website, I don't see where they're reporting news. I only see posts from others. Where are they reporting the news?

yay, I've always been looking forward to another Buzzfeed. /s

I wonder if it will give the next iPhone review score of 12/10

thanks for the tip that the iOS widget can display News for Canada.

Different topic:
It's one thing if apple to needs to keep News off iOS devices sold in China or other places that probably would prevent the sale of the device if News were included.
But totally bizarre that you can get the app to appear on your device screen as long as you change the Regional preference.
News is a geat app. I use it all the time. But I can't use apple pay with non-USA credit card.
So it's either apple pay using my Japan regional setting, or, News with an allowed regional setting.
