One of AT&T's largest markets won't allow online purchase under Next. Guess that solved that. Just have to wait until October and go the 2-yr contract route.

Total fail.

What's the reason?

Who knows. Prob some BS law but AT&T should have sorted that out. That removes a huge selling point to Next in terms of upgrading every year. You have to do it in store (i.e., wait in a long line).

I wonder if it has something to do with taxes. On Next, you pay the fed and state taxes up front, but since New Yorkers get to pay an extra, third tax for the <ahem> privilege <ahem> of living in NYC, you are SOL for whatever reason.

... if you can't do it on the apple site then probably the only place to pre-order is the actual AT&T site at 12:01am PST ...
 
Probably due to NYC having the highest probability of theft of smartphones.
 
This blows. Now I will have to go to the store in the morning on a line??? Can I even go to apple or are we forced to att? Wtf
 
Are you kidding?!?! The reason why I was doing it online was to prevent me from waiting in long lines next week...
 
I hope someone finds out what the deal really is. Very disappointing and would make me reconsider my choice in providers.

If you try and buy an iPhone 5, select Next as the purchase option. I was going through the steps to see what I would want to do in advance so that there are no surprises at 3am and saw this. Would have sucked to realize this at 3am. So have to do your order in store tomorrow. Hopefully there wont be a line
 
I got it too. Just go to buy an iPhone 5S or 5C and choose AT&T Next. Hit continue, and then the error shows. Won't let you move forward.

I swear, I feel like Apple is going out of its way to make it impossible for me to give them my money...

This is odd.. I don't get this message. I get all the way to the phone in my cart and can click the checkout button.

I am in the Bronx..

Is it only for Manhattan folks?

I tried the exact same thing in Upstate NY and I did not see the error either. I'd hate to have a 3AM surprise.

Off topic: Will Apple let you use more than one credit card for a pre-order? I wasn't planning on a subsidized contract, but I may have to. :(

Usually you can use two cards.

I'm on Long Island and I'm getting the message when I try to buy a 5S with next :mad:

EDIT: It seems like I can buy a 5S on AT&T's site though...

I wonder if it has to do with the billing zip of you at&t account?

My billing zip for at&t and my billing and shipping addresses for Apple are all in Brooklyn. I get the error :(

I'm about 20 miles North/West of NYC and just tried and got the same message that I cannot purchase online using NEXT.

Really strange/stupid restriction.

Did you select Next and / or are you already on Next? I get the message and I am on a 2-year contract, on a family plan (not the shared value), and live in Manhattan.

When I select the upgrade via Next I get this message.
