To me, instinctively, this is a bad publicity for Apple. Either the New Yorkers are prone to lose things or AirPod's ear fit isn't that good.

I don’t about that statement to say as far as saying that the ‘fit isn’t that good’, as the article indicated, the majority of the AirPods that were being lost, was during the summertime with heat/humidity, when there’s moisture in someone’s ears, they can slip out. Keep in mind, Apple sells millions of AirPods, and the majority probably are never returned for poor fitment.

I personally definitely won't buy any AirPods - not because I will lose them, but because I would constantly fear that I lose them. Got some good wireless headphones instead, with noise isolation and possibly better sound. Yes, they are a lot bigger.

You don't have to buy AirPods. Sounds like they're free in the New York subway system :)

NYC subway is filthy and knowing what lands on the track bed and crawling around, I would never retrieve one and ever think of putting it back in my ear. The cost of replacement is by far a cheaper alternative to the potential medical bill.

There's a reason headphones have cables. Apple invented something nobody wanted.

Oh I don’t know. I use my AirPods all the time. They are a brilliant invention. Especially with an Apple Watch leaving iPhone at home.

Not gonna lie, I almost got run over once cuz it fell out of my ear and naturally I kneeled down to pick it up in the middle of the street. And I am not even American.

i really have to be careful with mine cuz they barely fit in my ears. Sleeping on public transport like a bus with them in my ears for example is out of the question. Just resting my head on the window makes them fall out

That is the genius of Apple marketing. They have convinced millions of people that having to charge their headphones, risk losing them, putting up with terrible sound quality, and spending $200 on them is better than having a cable and all those other things being better/cheaper.

Seems like if you're between jobs or homeless you could make a little side money with a magnetic pole or even just some duct tape on an old broom charging $20 to retrieve lost AirPods.

Washed my wife's in the laundry. Worked fine afterwards.

For not having a water resistance rating, there’s surprisingly water resistant. I’ve worn mine in the gym multiple times when weight training, not one issue with them.

After asking many times, I bought my daughter a pair with the warning that if she lost them, I would not get her anymore.

She has had them for six months, and has not lost them, but....

She recently asked me to buy her a wired headset, I asked her why, and she said so she can make phone calls while riding her bike. She said that she can’t use the AirPods because they fall out too easily and she is afraid of the being lost or broken.

I was happy that she asked for a headset instead of risking her AirPods, but was curious to why she could not use one of the many wired headsets that I have around the house, then she reminded me that her phone doesn’t have a headphone jack.

And the idea of making phone calls while riding a bike wasn't an issue? Well it's better than texting while riding, I suppose. But I often think back to a time riding with my mountain biking buddy a few years back. We'd finished our ride in the woods and were pedaling toward our cars. He whipped out the phone to call the wife and tell her to start the grill. And promptly rode head-on into a telephone pole and fractured his jaw.

And the phone does have a headphone jack. Which she can probably use while on the bike, since I'm guessing she won't be charging the phone at that time.

Nothing some cleaning alcohol wouldn’t solve.

Sure, but as I mentioned before, I’d just cut my losses and purchase a new one. But I give credit to anyone that’s willing to use duct tape and stick to pull up a AirPod on a subway track.

So the good news is that you only have to buy one if you lose one. If you lose both it's still a little bit cheaper because you don't need a new charging case.

Seeing the photo: Can you put AirPods in the washing machine or dish washer (and get them out in working condition)?

I've put mine 3 times in the washing machine accidentally. Bought them on release day back in 2016 and they're still working fine - except the battery life.

I live in NYC and have freak ears that aren’t compatible with airpods. They tend to pop out of my ears constantly. Hence I prefer the new Powerbeats pros. Not only do they not fall off, they have longer battery life. I do think the look of the airpods are great, they just don’t like my ears.

Pretty clever. Cut the cords and cheapen out on not including form fitting ear tips so they easily get lost. Profit off of recurring replacements.

So plugging a cable into my watch would be better. Not sure I agree.

Why are the losing them? I used to commute on the tube every day up until a few months ago and I never lost my AirPods on the tracks.

I heard some news that a guy managed to swallow one, waited until it came out the other end, and it still worked somehow.
