First of all, very enjoyable article. It made me happy, but im not sure why?

Second, i have a new product idea. A light weight string that runs between the two air pods so they cant get lost?

I know its a bit off the charts, but bear with me. Just imagine that this string was electrically conductive, and what if it even attached to the phone that is playing the music? The clever part is that this conductive string could keep them charged all day long!

And i dont mean to get carried away, but we know how bluetooth devices are fighting for space in the heavily used 2.4ghz frequency band, so what if we could transmit the audio signal on the same conductive string? It would be a clear signal path, which would be great!

I know, pipe dreams. I mean, to make it a reality, a bunch of manufacturers would have to get together and come up with a standardized connection and a signal transmission standard.

That would never happen, am i right?

And the phone does have a headphone jack
If you are referring to the lightning port, that isn’t a headphone jack, it is a lightning port. While the lightning port is able to use headsets with a dongle, or using Apple’s Lightning EarPods, it isn’t a headphone jack.

And the idea of making phone calls while riding a bike wasn't an issue? Well it's better than texting while riding, I suppose. But I often think back to a time riding with my mountain biking buddy a few years back. We'd finished our ride in the woods and were pedaling toward our cars. He whipped out the phone to call the wife and tell her to start the grill. And promptly rode head-on into a telephone pole and fractured his jaw.
If she had a headset, why would she need her hands on the phone?
She could answer a phone call, or make one, all without touching her phone.

I think this story is more about dropping them. Have you ever dropped them? I think everyone has dropped them occasionally especially while fiddling with them and it's hard to actually lose them when you drop them onto the floor or even ground outside. Now add in the fact that New Yorkers spend lots of time waiting for subways everyday. So when they drop their AirPods, they are likely to fall onto the tracks. People can still see them but are afraid (and should be) to retrieve them. If any other city had as much mass commuting, their population would experience the same issues with AirPods being "lost".
Look, I don’t even have my phone out on the subway because I’m paranoid about dropping it on the track, lol. If I drop an Airpod, the blame falls on me and only on me.

But the beautiful thing is, there is a huge headphone market and people can choose other options if they have clumsy hands taking AirPods in and out.

Maybe the MTA should gather all the lost air pods and have a sale out on the subway platforms.

I lost one in the subway when the door whacked me and it popped out. MTA could theoretically get them back to the original owners through Apple. The do have a signature.

Well, this is just hilarious...

I'm curious how many have bought replacements for them as there is no apple care for airpods..

So now not only is a guy where you can buy used golf balls from a lake but now there are sellers of used AirPods from train tracks. Yuck.

That's why my $19.99 generic airbuds are so much better. You lose it and don't risk your life to retrieve them, just pick up another pack at the convenience store.

I have no doubt there are a lot lost but I can comfortably say, there are a lot of knockoffs in NYC. Probably still a mojority are actual Airpods, but the numbers are inflated with knockoffs.

I’ve been a day 1 owner, never lost an AirPod. You have to be careful.

I know right? Surely these things can’t be fitting the ears they’re in. I’ve used my original pair, everyday, everywhere and never lost one. I’m kinda shocked.

I simply don't understand this at all.

Admittedly, I don't wear my AirPods constantly, but I just don't get how people loose them.

And Mossberg having lost TEN pair? Thats ****ing ridiculous.

They don't easily fall out - at least not out of my ears, and I could never keep the wired kind in easily.

Just leave them in your ears. Don't take them out unless you're sitting at your desk or in a place where if they DO fall to the ground, you can easily pick them up. If you leave them alone when you're in the subway, you won't lose them in the subway!

For example, when im out and about and I walk over a sewer grate, I don't take my keys out of my pocket and start handling them. Obviously, if they fell they would get lost. I keep them in my pocket, and guess what? Ive never had my keys fall in a grate.

The wastefulness and sheer stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me.
Thank you Sir for you insight and your opinion on how other people are so stupid and you are the smart one left.
I also like the idea you have is never to take it out. A little surprised that you didn't suggest using crazy glue.
Also, your idea about watching the road while walking is the best thing we all should learn. With the introduction of smartphones, people are so glued to the phone and distracted that they don't realize whether the road has any sewer gate or not. At least, now they will keep a watch on them. And guess what?? If they find any of those gates broken, they can tweet it to the city office.

I applaud you for your high observation capability and sensible smartness.

No problems with my PowerBeats Pro.
I mean sure, you’re right. I recently had airpods since launch until about 2 weeks ago when my dog ate them...

however I’ve now got Powerbeats pro (tried to new Sony in ears but they were too uncomfortable, shame as they sound incredible)

I find the Powerbeats pro are so low in volume compared to both the AirPods and Sony’s...I have to have the Powerbeats on 75% volume to match what the AirPods or Sony’s had...shame as I like them otherwise!

Seeing the photo: Can you put AirPods in the washing machine or dish washer (and get them out in working condition)?

Mine have lasted many torrential rain storms and a trip through the washing machine without any issues. Just really bad battery life. But they are two years old now.

I don't think it's because of people taking them on and off. they just don't fit most people!!!!!!!!!

I dropped one in the “to shred” box at work a few months back. Got them to open it so I didn’t actually lose the pod—is definitely just leave it on the tracks if it fell into the subway.

But it made me aware of how often I was popping one out of my ear and just holding it while I tried to do something. Since then I’ve been better about pausing myself and putting the pod back into the case.

They shouldn't be retrieving them. It's not their fault. If I dropped one I wouldn't even think to ask them to retrieve it. It would be my mistake for not being more careful.

To be honest with you, I also agree that the Powerbeats Pro could be a lot louder, especially at that price point. My pops that still uses the classic EarPods laughed at me stating that his pods were louder after he tried on my Pro's...………….Unfortunately, he was right.

My wife's airpods went through the washing machine in the charging case (can't remember if it was discovered before or after the clothes went in the dryer) and worked no differently than before.

Since then she lost the charging case (fell out of her pocket while running). Replacement is a bit of a hassle because you have to go through the genius bar/customer service as if its a service appointment, though I imagine this is almost entirely to reduce the opportunity for people to buy replacement parts to go along with stolen charging cases or airpods w/o charging cases.

Tim be rubbing his hands together over in Cupertino.

Wait until he breaks out the numbers for replacement Airpods in September.

"We have hit tremendous growth in replacement AirPods. It is off the cart amazing numbers. They account now for more profits than all other of our product divisions combined. So we have decided to scrap all other products and services and just focus on these. Hope you enjoyed this afternoon as much as we have."

I’ve never lost any AirPods individually but I got drunk once at a hotel and probably left my AirPods there (case + pods).

In 2017, I flipped some AirPods. One British guy bought one pour from me and said he kept losing them, it was his 5th pair now.

I’d hold on to my AirPods when exiting a busy train. I’m pretty good at that. That said, the first day I moved into my new building, I held too much stuff in both hands and my apartment key slipped out of my hand and fell through the gap between the elevator door and cart. Luckily, the elevator engender was scheduled to be on site the next day and it was recovered.
