Target Harlem had two 32GB Wifi Black iPad 2s today. No one there. I got there at 7:50am, walked casually to the electronics department, bought one and was out in 15 mins.

I'm kinda glad I decided to skip a generation and wait for the iPad 3. That said, I think next time, to cure this problem, they should stock their stores on launch day, then fill all online orders before sending anymore to stores. That way Apple gets its lines on launch day, and everyone else gets their ipad shortly after. The resellers would have a decreased demand.

The only way it will stop is if the resellers end up stuck with a large inventory and lose their shirt on the deal.

All I want to say is if apple release ipad 2 in Asian countries such as Japan, and China at the same time as US, everyone will be happy:). Now I am the one also waiting for my ipad 2.

I totally slept on the release day and thought I would be able to pick one up during the week here at one of the NYC Apple Stores. No such luck. Don't have the time to wait online for hours before work and I am hesitant to have such an expensive item (looking for 64G ATT 3g) delivered to my apt in Brooklyn. I have been checking the Target tracker constantly hoping to find one in the afternoon after work. Saw that it was available at the Target on Queens BLVD so I took a drive over. I got there and they said they didn't have any. I typed in the product number into the price checker like some have suggested and it too said not in stock. Oh well, walked down to Best Buy, which is in the same building and put down a deposit. Was talking to the manager who was working the desk at the time and he said we should have it in a week or so. Said today was the last day they were taking reservations. Figured since the $100 giftcard is refundable I would give it a shot. Not getting my hopes up.

Nonsense.

You will see the same thing, only sent to other countries. Don't act like selling to China and Japan or Korea would be a solution.

Thats not 2G thats just their 3G speeds :D

Lol actually to be honest, I'm in staten island and their 3G speeds are faster. Much faster when u have full service. But the problem is, where u have 3G is far and few between. My iPad mostly has the little o in stead of 3g

I tried several times on the 11th at the 14th St store. Stupid long lines. Stupid long lines every day since.

On launch day at 2am I went to the Fifth Avenue store and they only had Verizon models. I thought this didn't bode well for Verizon but nowi know all it means is Teheran resellers have no use for them. Good to know.

Anyway, I ordered online at 6am a 64GB AT&T model. It just shipped and will be here next week, at which point I take the Verizon one back. I should've bought two. Silly me for just buying for myself. I'd actually like one for my sister, good luck to me on that.

Apple really does need to address this or they ,ay as well just ship them directly to Hong Kong and skip the middlemen. Why we couldn't have reservations like the iPhone 4 is beyond me. Why there weren't same day delivery preorders is beyond me.

Actually it's not beyond me. I still believe Apple went out of there way to maximize lines after the Verizon iPhone launch. I guess we also know why there were o lines then: international market for CDMA really.

What's weird is the scalpers buying in NYC at all. Youpaylike 9% sales tax here. Surely that cuts into profits? Not enough I guess.

It's somewhat ironic that Apple pays to air freight them from China so scalpers can buy them to air freight them back to China.

FYI all Apple location have cops who are aware of what's going on with the grey market situation. I was at 14th street at was listening to three cops(two uniform and one plain clothes ) this morning, also 70% of the 1st 100 in line was Asian.

Did you also call? Cause I did and they said they're all out. And that online inventory does not represent in-store availability.

Careful with the snob comment, some people take it seriously...

yes i called and they said there was only 1 person in line at 2pm. the best buy downstairs had a big line already. weird. i chose target because everyone here was talking about best buy and the apple store. my first choice was wal mart, but none in NYC

people were so set on going to an apple store or best buy they forgot about Targer which is just wal mart with red letters instead of blue.

only downside was that i was going to buy a 16GB wifi or 32 at most. ended up with a 64GB wifi. and stupid amex decided to pull a fraud alert so i had to pay cash. when i walked out the best buy line downstairs hadn't moved at all

pretty sure that if people look outside the snobby stores and areas they will probably score an ipad in a few days

I saw the same thing at the Fifth Avenue store today. I saw one big plain clothes cop telling a chinese man that he was loitering, and had to move along. The Apple Store had some of the snaking lines back on the plaza, instead of just having the line on the sidewalk as it has been the rest of the week. It may be that the neighboring businesses were getting annoyed by the lines, but it may also be that they have an easier time cracking down if the guys handing out the money are technically on private property.

semi relevant- anything on Long Island today? can't find anything :(

Forget Long Island, the Chinese invaded there too. I live near the manhasset store. After 4 days of waiting in line, and not willing to play the bait and switch game I gave up and ordered from B&H. NY is now overrun with the Chinese.

DO the apple stores have cases other than smart covers? Bought a case but want to see if anything better

Apple store in Soho was totally empty and they had no clue when they would get more in. Just swung by.

Good news is that they said I can exchange my opened 16GB model (bought online) for a 32GB model at anytime they had inventory.

So I have something to hold me over.

if in fact the majority of resellers are in fact of asian descent, it has nothing to do with their ethnicity or some twisted moral compass of the status quo but rather the ingenuity on their part to react to their markets demands. Quite smart actually.

These are from Tuesday 3/15 at about 8:30am at the 5th Avenue store. That was a day that compared to the Wed-Thur-Fri madness was really not that bad. You can't see but the line in the second pic snakes around the block and continues up.

I tried to take pics on Wednesday but a) it was too dark and b) I was getting weird looks..

(And yes let's please keep this thread racism-free)

OMG.
That is what I call a line
How far (in the second pic) does that go around the corner; another city block?

I don't know about Tuesday, which by the way was a cold day, but the next day Wednesday, when it was both cold and raining, it went around the corner, up to the next street, ACROSS THE STREET, and up at least to the next street. Completely nuts.

My lord.
Let me see if I understand this. The line goes for give or take 3-4 blocks; yet it is common knowledge that even the flagship store gets little shipments daily.

So how is it these people still wait, knowing full well there will be zero stock remaining that day? How long do they wait; 4 solid days?

I don't get it. Sleep, eat, restroom... etc. Crazy

I can understand being able to take 1 day off of work, but how do people stand in line for 3-4 days, etc?

Again, DO YOU REALLY NEED AN IPAD 2 IMMEDIATELY?! Just order online and wait. Jesus!

What's a couple weeks in the grand scheme of things? I would rather wait a couple weeks in the luxury of my own home than spend a week, dirty, smelly, cold and angry on the sidewalk for the slim chance to buy one.

People are ridiculous.

Yeah, getting an iPad in a dwindling supply by standing in a four block long line seems pretty, uh, optimistic.
