Yet, his statement was unequivocal.

Also didnt realize Amazon was a mums and pops shop that made a convincing case for not being able to withstand the 'Apple tax' independents must concede to
No his statement can be subject to interpretation. As in today, all developers are treated the same. Maybe Amazon would not have gotten the same deal, today. But clearly there were exceptions in the past.

Part of the deal for a lower cut of subscriptions with Amazon was that Amazon Prime Video would be on Apple TV+.

At this point, Apple and Google have little choice but to lower their cut from 30% to 15%. Yes, the service revenue will take a one time hit, but it's all but unavoidable.

Furthermore, allow 3rd party billing. These apps require new Apple Developer Gatekeeper Program (starts at $9,999/year, more for higher volume), similar to existing Apple Developer Enterprise Program ($299/year). Like apps created by the enterprise program, these apps forego App Store listing. They can only be installed through a web link, and once installed, updated through App Store.

The idea that it’s Apple’s pie to begin with is the problem. WSJ and NY Times existed long before iOS or the App Store.

This. Apple News is more about Apple wanting a share of the NYT and WSJ's pie, not the other way around. If Apple, can't provide a way for these publishers to increase their income, then it's not worth their bother. Personally, I think Apple News is a flop. Note this is very different from the App Store situation. Regarding the App Store, Apple is providing a substantial base of technology, and the apps are leveraging that. What is Apple providing to the publishers with Apple News? It's not access to the Apple customer base--the publications already have that. For example, I already subscribe to some of those publications, and I can get them on all my Apple devices via a browser of their own iOS apps, so what am I gaining here? And I'd rather see my subscription fees go to support the publications than to increase Apple's market value.

Amazon Prime Video offers In-App purchasing???
For any app in the App Store that offers IAP, there a drop-down menu that shows the item and its prices. Here's Amazon Prime Video's:

Apple should give News+ publishers the 15% revenue share if it leads to better quality news and magazines.

if I ran Apple I would seriously consider shutting down the App Store
Customers might love their iPhones and iPads.
They aren't going to love them very much after you've shut down the App Store.
They aren't going to love Apple very much, when there are competing devices with (Play) Stores.

If Apple does cave, it will set a very bad precedent for them and it will create an even bigger domino effect.
I for one welcome that domino effect. 10%, maybe even 15% seems reasonable as a share of subscriptions. Developer tools or not, it's not as if Apple was providing much of a recurring service for delivery of news and editorial articles.

And tell me, what happens if they don't? More crying in public? Where are iOS app developers going to go? Android? Where they'll make pretty much nothing.

I would love for Apple to lower their fees from 30% to 15%, but these media companies signed contracts. If they feel like it, they can try selling their wares elsewhere.
