Since part of Amazon's deal was for Prime Video to be on Apple TV, maybe Apple should offer a 15% revenue share with the publishers only if they are willing to be part of Apple News/Apple News+
No they shouldn't. During the recent anti-trust hearings, Tim Cook went on record stating that Apple treats all developers equally even though there was direct evidence showing the opposite. They should be held to that statement even if it means putting a gun to their head. The publishers don't owe Apple anything. If Apple is true to their word, they will lower the subscription-based commission to 15% from day one for all subscription-based services, not just Amazon.

Epic won’t win, and in the meantime, their golden goose will lose tens of millions of dollars and fade into obscurity (like most of these apps eventually do). Kids are moving on

“tens of millions of dollars”....🤣

Epic can lose that and not even notice. They made almost $2 BILLION last year. That is how successful this game is. They aren’t stupid. The iOS version is not their cash cow. They are willing to sacrifice it to get a better deal. If they don’t get it, they won’t lose much.

It should also give a pause to anyone that thinks the Mac will be a viable gaming platform when they switch to Apple silicon. If the big companies are willing to throw away iOS, they won’t even pass a second thought to the Mac.

You think Epic is doing this to save fortnite?
They deliberately sacrificed fortnite to do it lol. Pretty obvious at this point.
You are completely right, my guess is Epic is using the fornite issue as a tool to get anti-trust investiagations in various parts of the world to force Apple to allow people to install software from other sources than the Apple App store, Epic wants to be the alternative App store, that is Epics end game.

This. Apple News is more about Apple wanting a share of the NYT and WSJ's pie, not the other way around. If Apple, can't provide a way for these publishers to increase their income, then it's not worth their bother. Personally, I think Apple News is a flop. Note this is very different from the App Store situation. Regarding the App Store, Apple is providing a substantial base of technology, and the apps are leveraging that. What is Apple providing to the publishers with Apple News? It's not access to the Apple customer base--the publications already have that. For example, I already subscribe to some of those publications, and I can get them on all my Apple devices via a browser of their own iOS apps, so what am I gaining here? And I'd rather see my subscription fees go to support the publications than to increase Apple's market value.
What vast technology is Apple providing for the WSJ or NY Times app? How are those apps much different than their websites?

Part of the deal for a lower cut of subscriptions with Amazon was that Amazon Prime Video would be on Apple TV+.
Isn’t it the case that Apple had to lower their cut in order to get Prime Video on Apple TV+? In other words in this case Apple wanted and needed Prime Video to be on their platform and would cut the best deal Amazon would give them to get it.

All this for 1st year 30%? ( 15% difference in 1st year subscription)
The commission goes down to 15% after 1st year!

Their claims of being hurt is way overblown.. there is no hurt... its just being spoiled and being opportunistic to jump on the band wagon in the present climate...🤦🏼‍♂️

This just proves my argument that it’s 3rd parties which make iOS and Apple hardware more valuable/desirable. Those products/services just being on Apple’s platform makes Apple a ton of money. They shouldn’t need to skim off the top of adjacent markets.

But these services being on iOS also makes them a lot of money. Developers need iOS more than iOS needs developers, because of the large pool of users you’re missing out on getting money from with your app. Trust me, I’m a developer, and you really don’t want to miss the 1 billion active iOS device users. Plus, the 30% is fair and is standard across many services. We didn’t ask you to complain for us.

Cry me a river, leave if you dont like it, nobody cares about your crap news. Amazon has more to offer, you do not. Not all deals are the same.

Apple News, the free-tier service is great and has a 100 million monthly viewers. It's News+ that has so far been a flop.

Pushing News + in Apple News has made the non-plus service a flop (for me).

I stopped reading ESPN for doing the same thing.

For any app in the App Store that offers IAP, there a drop-down menu that shows the item and its prices. Here's Amazon Prime Video's:

So only the monthly subscription is available as in-app purchase?

Because everything else available on prime is done outside the app. Whenever I chose content not available with the prime subscription, I get the “how do I watch this?” Option which tells me to pay for it on the website.

And another group piles on.
At least they are going about it the right way. EPIC did a publicity stunt and most likely will fail in their effort. The news groups may get something done on this because they are doing it correctly.

Major difference between the two. NYT is't publishing a front page article denouncing Apple and their 30% fee or cut of costs. EPIC is, which is going to be their downfall.

They gave Amazon a discount because otherwise Amazon will remove all product from the store, like they did a few years back. It should be equal for all developers...5%

Something that someone, somewhere in Apple might consider is that local print media is one of the few places that good investigative journalism still exists. The value that these local news outlets provide to citizens and democracy as a whole can not be overstated. Unfortunately, local newspapers are in a death spiral. Reducing the fee could allow struggling papers to find their way off of the endangered species list. Just a thought.

Yes, that's correct.

(Redacted, I should have realized this was a kid from the pic, apologies.)

15% is more reasonable considering hosting is dirt cheap. Helping devs will in turn help the ecosystem. On the contrary, without devs your ecosystem is dead.
