A 2W jump when talking about the 15" MBPs, but a 12W jump when talking about the 13" MBPs.

oh...that....yeah.....damn
sorry, posting out of context :D

personally i think the current Iris5100 is good enough, no point spending another 12W for a slightly better graphics performance.

----------

well hopefully the new mbp's will be released next tuesday

the cash is lock and loaded

MacBook Pro wishlist:

- Major increase in battery life
- Slight CPU performance increase
- Significant discrete GPU increase (the nVidia one)
- Thunderbolt 2.0 and/or support for external 4K displays
- Quad Core + 16GB option for the 13" version

Nice to have:

- Slightly thinner/lighter
- Slight increase in Retina resolution
- Slightly cheaper :D

- Quad Core + 16GB option for the 13" version
This is exactly the ONE thing I'd hope I can get from new Macbook pro

I wanted 16 GB for the MacBook Air. If we are talking about the MacBook Pro, you can always visit OWC or NewEgg. Now getting DDR3L might be a little tougher.

I am getting a better vibe from what hardware is coming in the MacBook Pro over the Air. I just hope the display is not still 1280 x 800. I will throw a fit.

Haswell IPC = Ivy Bridge IPC + 10%

It's to be expected that the CPU gains are quite modest.
No. The H.264 encoder x264 is up to two times faster on hardware, which supports the AVX 2 instruction set (Haswell & newer).

----------

Just to note than my 15" MBPr rates 500 higher on Geekbench under Mavericks compared to ML...
Apple uses probably newer versions of clang and LLVM to compile the OS parts (frameworks, kernel extensions, ...), and those newer compilers generate more efficient code.

----------

Really?

And no mention of the fact that Apple is switching from a M-series CPU to a U-series one?

Going from 35W TDP to 28W is a considerable change. The new MBA only dropped 2W and look at the kind of battery life increase we've had.
You cannot compare Ivy Bridge with Haswell, because Haswell has integrated voltage regulators.

The only way to get Iris Pro 5200 is to go to a 47W quad core CPU. That's a pretty big jump up from the 28W CPU benchmarked here or the 35W CPU in the current rMBP, so pretty unlikely.

If Apple decide that the 5200 is fast enough to drop the discrete graphics chip, then 47W would be a nice reduction in overall power consumption. I'm not predicting either way whether or not Apple will make such a move in 2013, but it's clearly a priority goal for Intel among their design tradeoffs.

Wow... soon they will begin making less-powerful computers just to accommodate design.

Not really less powerful, they're getting more efficient, which is key IMO. Better battery life is fantastic.

However, I originally was annoyed that I missed out on Haswell for my rMBP, but after looking at everything, not so much. This still lasts over 8 hours and scored over 11,000 on geekbench.

It weighs what....six ounces? Why on earth would you leave it behind?

.

Yeah, good point. The cord doesn't weigh much. And if you are going away for the weekend you have a bag full of cloths already. But it is sort of awkward and a mess of tangles. And you have to unplug it which means (for many of us) clambering under a desk. So definitely nice to leave the cord at home if you do an overnight business trip. This battery life is good enough for that.

i doubt there will be an event for the updated mbps

So I don't understand how you say new MacBook Pro will be released next week exactly Thursday. Do you have some other infos? I think They will be showed on october without any doubt

i said tuesday, not thursday. but no i don't have any special info. in the past, apple has released new hardware on tuesdays. i said i hope that they get released next tuesday. that is all

Should I wait or buy now?

I wouldn't want a retina model, I don't think I require it and I would like to save that money. I don't think I could hold it off till September UNLESS it's really really worth it. Would it make a big difference? I'm a music producer, I'll definitely be using Logic and Ableton on it.

I'm shocked Apple hasn't extended to you an offer of employment. You obviously know more about designing Apple's computers than Apple.

So do you have any special info behind saying that they will no doubt be released in October? In actual fact, this is probably incorrect, fact of the matter is no one knows what date Apple are going to release the next MBP's and they don't necessarily need to have an event on the updated MBP's either so they could release it whenever they see fit.

So is my 8GB RAM and Intel i7 2013 MBA more powerful than this 2013 MBP?
Yes, but this isn't the most powerful configuration. Apple should have other dual-core and quad-core configurations.

With respect to battery life, we should see a significant improvement in battery life if Apple uses the Haswell GPU and a minor improvement if Apple uses a nVidia GPU.

Another potential addition that others haven't mentioned is the fingerprint sensor technology that Apple spent $340M to acquire last year. This almost certainly won't be an iPhone-only and iPad-only feature. Apple is not going to unveil MacBook Pro with fingerprint technology months before they unveil an iPhone 5S/6 and iPad with the technology.

A 10-12% bump in processor performance + PCIe flash storage + 10+ hours of battery life == my next computer

hmmm, i think that the fact that only one model's scores surfaced could be taken as evidence that the 13 cmbp will not be receiving an upgrade. this would make sense since it's education price dropped significantly, too. it's doubtful apple would lower the price so much and continue to give it cpu upgrades. that would be too much of an incentive for shoppers to continue choosing the 13 cmbp over the air and retina.

Exactly. I could see the 13" cMBP sticking around for another year or maybe possibly two as Apple's educational model, kind of like the white MacBook.

I think the 13" is safe for at least another year but wonder if Apple will cut the 15" cMBP with the Haswell rMBP refresh this year. The 15" is more of a 'Pro' computer. Look what they are doing with the Mac Pro. IMHO if one wants a 15" cMBP better buy soon.

Yeah agree, I think there is more chance of the 13'' cMBP sticking around than there is of the 15''. Waiting to see some official movement on the upcoming release of the updated MBP's as I'm itching to buy one myself..

Well I don't have any info behind saying new MBP will be released in October but I have followed Apple's marketing from many years and I'm pretty sure they will present them during an event. Now the nearest event will be probably after the summer so on September or October. Even if new MBP will rapresented only a speed bump, I don't think they will be just included into Apple Store without any keynot but this is only my humble opinion.
