I'm betting even it gets an upgrade to a faster chip. Price won't change but power will.

The ONLY thing that would tempt me to buy one is if the memory was greatly increased so that when I rented a movie the ENTIRE movie(s) would be downloaded so that I could then watch them later without any stuttering during playback. However, that hasn't been much of a problem since I upgrade to 100 Mbps internet service.

Perhaps it'll be $149 and $199 to account for 2 storage options? In any case, either are reasonable given the new capabilities. I think the bigger question is how much are they going to charge for additional controllers? The usual business practice is to over-charge on accessories, but that won't help the new Apple TV grow as a gaming platform.

"a starting price of $149 or $199"

I don't think that means two models, but the ATV will be priced at $149 or $199.

I have an Apple TV here, don't even know what generation. Initially I enjoyed to use it, but like most of their other software somewhere along the line they managed to screw things up. Now I'm usually watching endlessly at 'spinning wheels' (whatever i is called) and hardly gets used anymore. I don't hope with the new software we see another flawed software release (like the Apple Music one).

I never understood the spinning wheel criticism on ATV. I have to wait a few seconds (sometimes 2 seconds and sometimes up to 5 seconds) between each buffer command and it's annoying but I wouldn't describe it as "watching endlessly at 'spinning wheels'". In fact, it's about the same wait I have to endure when I change channels in FIOS. (My FIOS box gets cranky every few days so I have to reboot it and then it's fine. I should just probably have it reset every night while I sleep but I think I have it set wrong right now)

Are you sure you don't just need a simple factory reset to fix something? When I think of endless spinning wheels, I think of the beach ball in Mac OS X that freezes the computer for seconds or even minutes with no end in sight.

too much anymore that $99 is too much that seems to be the benchmark and there are too many other alternatives for it to be that high and we haven't even seen roku's next box. I have an Xbox One and once it gets HBO Now will have everything I really need

You have no idea how much this is going to exceed a Roku. I expect full voice navigation of all my TV services, with Siri's cloud database keeping track of all shows and how they can be accessed from all my services. I expect all I will have to do is tell Siri what show I want to watch, and it will determine if I can find the show via On Demand, via streaming subscriptions or via live TV, then navigate there.

I'm beginning to doubt the "streaming bundle service" that "keeps getting delayed"

If - if an App Store is in the offing then the content companies themselves will be selling us their "programming apps" direct just as HBO and SHOWTIME are already doing.

What benefit would Apple have by selling the bundling. Meaning then it's back to same old same old just smaller bundles.

I can totally see people willing to pay $9.99 month for Bravo for example if that's what they are into versus "40 channel bundles"..

This way Apple leaves choice to us and the free market of the App Store to set content pricing. And they avoid lame "deals" that just get them caught up in it per say.

Kind of like a Apple Pay type deal. They just handle the transactions and stay out of the content aspect.

Thoughts?

You expect a lot.

I hope you're not disappointed.

It stutters al the time. So much, I cant listen to it anymore. Streaming HD video with better audio from apps like Youtube is no problem.

Apart form that, the quality literally hurts my ears. Try it yourself. Search for a HD (flac rip) on Youtube and compare that with the same song on Apple Music. You'll be shocked. One small detail: You need good speakers to hear the difference.

Oh, right, you're a person with super ears and a reference 10K system in a build to spec room who listens to only harmonically complex direct from source (no post processing) music from instruments he's heard the sound before live... That's the only time when your "hurt my ears" statement "may" makes sense, and even there, the effect is more placebo than anything.

You do know how much post-processing there is in current music! How on earth would you even know your not getting the original? You can't! Not to mention that the original itself often is straight electronic that compresses very easily even at lower bitrate.

Of course, some people still swear by vinyls... So, hey...

You either have a problem with your Wi-Fi network or one of the devices involved. Stuttering is not normal and I have never experienced that. As far as the quality, I don't stream to separate speakers so I can't comment on that but I do stream through the TV like 95% of all ATV users and I don't hear any problems.

And what is the "beamer"?

Beamer is an amazing app. I use to swear by it before my configuration changed. It uses Airplay but doesn't play the file on your computer. You just drop the file in the beam app in OSX (almost all formats work including Mkv) and it plays it on your Apple TV without any lag! When I used airplay normally it was always choppy or had some audio lag.

It's not available on the App store because I think it uses some sort of protocol that is undocumented (at least that is what someone posted).

It basically made my experience with Apple TV worth it over the years until I hooked up a dedicated computer to my TV.

Completely uninformed speculation (but here's what I'd like)...

Apple TV model 4 - just like current one but better processor and more storage, so it can support an App Store that is nothing but media services. Plain old Apple Remote. $99

The Apple Box (I'm sure Apple will come up with a better name) - as rumor describes it. $149 entry level with 8GB storage, $199 with 32 GB storage.

Stuttering during playback is 100% dependent upon your connection. There's nothing ATV can do with a connection that cannot maintain minimal sustained data rates.

I Never had problems streaming from:
- iTunes app
- Youtube App (included HD video)
- Spotify
- Every other app that supports airplay from my library like Ambify

The only app that stutters using Airplay trough AppleTV is Apple Music.

Hardware used by me and my girlfriend:
iPad 4
iPad mini
iPhone 6
iPhone 5
AppleTV (2012 model)

Sorry but television speakers are no way to judge or compare audio quality.

I am ready to upgrade one of my AppleTV3's, it is acting very flakey so it is time for it to go. That is on my primary TV. I have an AppleTV1 that has storage for my errrrr adult content in the master bedroom. I would like to replace that as well. The others will be upgraded if the need arises.

The old Apple TV 3 should go for 20 dollars or less. It's pretty useless these days.

I'm excited for this new Apple tv, after all these years it really needs an update. I've now switched to Chromecast and thinking of buying my family a Roku. Best thing about the old Apple TV is the beamer app for OSx!

I don't disagree that Apple TV needs an update, but the current Apple TV is hardly useless. I have the 2nd gen and use it frequently to stream content from Netflix, Apple, and other providers, as well as listen to music.

Long overdue, but I'm not gonna bite at that price. Amazon FireTV is already doing this for less than half the price.

Give me cable channels (like TBS) for $5 a piece for the, $4 for the next and so on.
Maybe a bit more for ESPN and more for the HBOs.

If I wanted to pay $40 a month, why wouldn't I just keep cable?

If it's got the regular networks (ABC, CBS, etc) then maybe some benefits.
If it's got on demand streaming for all shows, so basically it's an unlimited DVR then there are some advantages.

SyFy, ABC Family, and maybe a few like TBS, TNT, CNN and Weather channel is probably all I'd be interested in. Even at the pricing scheme I made up above, I'm not sure I'd get that.

What you are describing is only a half step towards total independence. What I'm looking for is payment per show. I want access to everything on this planet and only pay for what I watch (not on a per-channel basis, but per-show basis). Basically the same thing as Apple provides for movies, but now for TV shows, series, reality TV etc etc. I'm prepared to pay top dollar for that if I can decide myself and have access to everything without subscriptions.

Another thing that will never happen though....

The point is the price needs to be justified. At $99, the AppleTV already costs a lot more than all of its (far more) capable competitors. This thing better make coffee.

My question is... What kind of GPU is going to be inside the new Apple TV? Is it's GPU going to be as or more powerful than the iPhone 6 Plus? If there is an Apple TV SDK then there might be some really interesting things that could be done with Apple's Metal graphics API!
