Apple this month filed next-generation CarPlay images with the EU's Intellectual Property Office, as it seeks to protect the design of the upcoming software system there. It is yet another sign that next-generation CarPlay might finally be nearing launch, after a few redesigned icons for the system showed up in iOS 18.2 beta code earlier this month.

The images show various next-generation CarPlay instrument cluster and interface designs, including a few with what appears to be the logo for German automaker Audi. When it first previewed next-generation CarPlay in June 2022, Apple said Audi was committed to offering it, but the automaker has yet to confirm any specific plans.

The database entries were discovered by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris.

Apple has already shown off what next-generation CarPlay looks like several times, so the images do not show anything we have not seen before, but the timing of the filings is notable. Apple's website continues to say that the first vehicles with next-generation CarPlay support will "arrive in 2024," but it has yet to provide a more specific timeframe. Aston Martin and Porsche previewed next-generation CarPlay vehicle designs in December 2023, but neither automaker has released any vehicles with support yet.

With just over a month left in the year, some are beginning to wonder if Apple will still meet its stated 2024 timeframe for next-generation CarPlay. So, it is reassuring that Apple is still working towards a launch behind the scenes.

I agree and I really like to see apple spend some time fixing the quirks and bugs that I run into daily with the current generation of CarPlay such as start the car and it will start uncommanded the same song over and over and then I have maps open and if I am at home and it will show home. I just want the map app to show current traffic and I have to tap out of directions for home and go to the general map.

For all the talk on interfaces in modern cars - if a manufacturer just got on with implementing this new Apple CarPlay it would be a huge selling point.

Every car review moans about the poor software and interface design.
True.

I'm a good example. In fact, I'd gladly buy a Volkswagen ID.4, but its infotainment system looks like real crap. I don't want that.

When I see articles about updated CarPlay it makes me nervous. The thought of buying another car right now is not an exciting idea. Hope that changes in the future but my list does not include a new car at the moment.

Interesting... considering Audi's parent company VW just crafted a deal with Rivian for software development and Rivian has no plans to integrate CarPlay whatsoever...
Yeah especially as software was mentioned all over the joint venture press release.

Rivian uses Google's Android Automotive OS, but without Google's services included (Play Store, Google Maps app, Assistant). With Android Automotive it can support Carplay or it can have Carplay taken out. I suspect Volkswagen can easily add in Carplay. That's actually what happened with the Honda Prologue, it's built on GM's software and hardware, which is built on Google's AAOS and includes Google's services, but GM does not support Carplay in EVs, however Honda was able to bring Carplay to the Prologue.

Ironically enough in GM gas cars they have Carplay with the same system as EVs. They just take it out of EVs. Kind of perpetuating a reality where using an EV over gas means losing features someone might like.

I use CarPlay in my 3 year old BMW. It works without any problems. When I get in the car and start, CarPlay starts automatically and If I haven't closed my YouTube music app, the song continues from where I left during last trip/listened at home. Maps shows distance to my work though I haven't given any instructions.
But I do prefer a different UI for current Apple Car play. Live widgets of my choice would be better.

Renault uses Android Automotive OS with Google services and running CarPlay simultaneously - it’s really good!

Sure would. If the new Audi A6 EV has this in it, then will be instant buy for me. Looks fantastic.

These adoption numbers are based on iPhones and iPads that transacted on the App Store on June 9, the day before WWDC began, according to Apple.

Why are you fiddling with anything non-essential at that speed?

Bad workman etc.

Is there anyone fumbling around in this ad though?

More surprised they are driving 205 in the dark without the headlights on.

People, calm down. It's in kph, so merely 127mph.

205 km/h… I think Germany is the only place where you're allowed to drive that fast on highways. In the rest of the world, having a Porsche is basically 1 % circuit-driving and 99 % bragging.
