I’m affraid Apple’s closed CarPlay system will go the same route as tv’s. Nobody wants to get dependent on Apple by Apple rules. That’s why most TV’s run some sort of Android. LG has its own WebOS (which is great by the way).

If Apple wants a bigger part of the automotive business they have to learn to play nice with them. But I’m afraid Apple is too late for that already and Android has been the system of choice for most.
Funny - I would not buy any car with out CarPlay and i would not buy any TV without Apple TV either attached to it via HDMI or in an APP - in fact all my LG devices ( OLED TV and three projectors ) have Apple TV as an APP

With the current downturn on the automotive market all sales boosting options will be pulled - after all they want the best from us - our money.

Even in case you consider my opinion wrong - I could be just a further customer for the car makers and I will not buy any car without CarPlay.

There are many reasons for that.

Well I definitely love and prefer Tesla software in the car above CarPlay.

And you’re right LG OLED with WebOS has an Apple app for AirPlay and AppleTV. But in the longer run it probably can’t compete with a native Android TV OS which seems to be the standard today.

Apple’s strategy for CarPlay makes no sense.

Why would an automaker invest a lot of time both building their own UX and hooking into Apple’s APIs and having to test and validate a second UX?

It only makes sense if they are selling a hardware kit to go in cars and they are taking over the UX.
Apple really needs to partner with 3rd party accessory makers instead of car companies.

I'd happily rip and replace the factory instrument cluster and infotainment system to get CarPlay 2 instead of the automaker's crappy factory system. I'd do it even quicker if it meant the automaker's spyware was removed with it.

An opinion
( driving a rental Performance Model 3 I have a hard time to understand what's positive? )

I guess I've never liked to be standard in any way

I'd assume most of the vehicle spyware would come from the gateway controller that talks to everything in the car. Which would be interesting to remove

The best solution for a Tesla would be Tesla software that also allowed phone projection via CarPlay / AA. That would allow you to use the car OS where it is needed and use CarPlay for things that the car does not provide.

best you can really hope to to do is clip its ears and go radio silent. bye bye fancy apps

I'm a keen technologist and a regular wireless-CarPlay user without issue in multiple vehicles, but as I write this I'm starting to grow tired of screens just stuck to car dashboards like giant iPads. I'm starting to wish for the return of "proper" dials in front of the steering wheel, along with a nice big screen in the middle for CarPlay integration. Proper knobs for the HVAC controls. I'm not sure that an all-digital approach to dashboard design is sensible... Everybody's opinion is valid though!

Touch controls/screens are harder to use, especially in a moving vehicle. Usually with more errors too. Even multi-functional dials can be annoying. I think they should drastically reduce the screen size and only show minimal information and buttons (Apple style). Unfortunately car makers like VW, Audi, Ford and Volvo seem to have only marketing guys designing the dash: lots of useless gauges, numbers, symbols, useless driving data, lots of pop-ups and most important for them, branding logos everywhere.

CarPlay in my view should be like a butler, anticipating and preset all the things in the car to your wishes the moment you take the drivers seat. With AI it should be able to learn all the settings for HVAC, preferred navigation, all without a dozen questions and pop-ups. I mean, my iPod Touch 12 years ago could anticipate when I had to leave for work without a full address in the calendar. It even learnt the walking distance between the parking lot (not marked on any map) and actual workplace in the building.

It should be an (hardware) option. I say the industry should create an open cartridge slot for a computer module. If you want Apple UI and stuff, insert the Apple module. Android? Android cartridge. LG WebOS, webOS cartridge.
And if you want a basic dumb Car... no cartridge. Same for TV.

Seems like it would also gimp your CarPlay connection choice, though if you are going third party and ripping everything out I guess that doesn't matter much.

You mean you want the industry to go back to DIN sized infotainment units that are not integrated into the rest of the car or it's functions?

Seems like we have these screens to begin with because backup cameras are now required (at least in the US).

Although the idea is fine, I’ll never see this happen. Car manufacturers should be able to control their own systems and it wouldn’t be wise to use a closed system from another manufacturer. If something went wrong, they’re dependent on for exemple Apple to solve the problem. Apple isn’t famous about solving problems quickly or to be transparent about it.

My guess is is that there will come an open standard where manufacturers can build on to distinguish itself from other brands. That standard will be open to all and slowly will copy the best examples what are already on the market.

If Apple wants to be a part of this business they should make a spin off of CarPlay and make it an independent solution where others can build on. Not hooked into Apple Inc.

This will never happen because it means that Apple has to share its Crown Jewels with others by opening it up.

I’ll think Android automotive offers that solution because it’s open and many manufacturers already embraces it (Volvo, many Chinese automakers).

It happened to tv’s, mobile phones, etc. The more companies embrace Android automotive the harder it will get for Apple to get an foothold in the automotive industry.

In my opinion Apple has been to slow, has shown not enough effort to be taken seriously, is too closed, is falling behind alternatives.

Didn't Volvo say that they were launching CarPlay on that car? Maybe still in-progress?
True, however I didn’t get the update yet.. Not expecting it for a while to be honest.. Will call the dealer later today to check if I can bring it in for an update, and funnily enough, I have to pay for this ‘visit’ to check if I can upgrade the software of my car.. seems archaic :/
