My 2 wishes are simple. a/ Non reflective screen
& b/ Get rid of shiny ugly apple in front of face

What's with this shiny shiny SHINY SHINY SHINY freek zone?

bonus feature, get rid of slim form factor and put some real desktop components in it. Who cares how fat it is when its up against the wall? Answer, the movie makers?

I have to agree that I like the Apple logo in front. The form factor (slim) of the iMac makes it appealing like others said in regards to its cleanliness on a desk. If you don't care about size then configure yourself a Mac Pro.

In regards to the movie makers, I appreciate Apple being shown in a beneficial manner. I think I drive my wife crazy with pointing out all the Apple items that end up in movies and TV shows. I think its great. Their presence is subtle, its not like the actors are laying across their desk asking their counterpart if they noticed their Apple computer...:apple:

That's simply not true and is misinformed. You need to have a compliant motherboard and video card and appropriate drivers to meet compliancy requirements and allow the output of a Blu-Ray movie via HDMI or DVI to a display.

Blu-Ray AACS has taken copyright protection to an inane level and has actually hindered its inclusion on computers.

I would still like to see a Blu-Ray burner on a Mac with native software support for playback and authoring but we should not fool ourselves that there's anything simple about it.

Last time I checked, Apple was complaining that they would actually have to put in Kernel level support for Blu-Ray copyright protection, something they really did not want to have to do.

almost PC made in the last 3 years or so has a motherboard with PCI Express and a video card that supports compliant drivers. I remember when Nvidia first came out with blu-ray compliant drivers a few years ago and they supported a lot of cards already on the market.

even the cheapo Intel "GPU's" support blu-ray playback. my current PC i built in 2006 and originally bought an ATI x1600 card which was already out for around a year. and even that supports hardware accelerated playback.

and it's BS that you need kernel changes in OS X to support blu-ray playback. people were playing blu-ray movies with XP before Vista came out. You just need compliant video drivers and ATI/Nvidia have had those for 4-5 years in the Wintel world

If nothing else, can we please have some extra USB ports and make them easy to access !

There's 6! How many more do you need and where do you want them?
$15 4-port hub ftw!

Actually, there are only 4 worthwhile - the ones in the keyboard don't work with most the stuff I plug into them. And who wants cables snaking off the keyboard anyway?

And why should I clutter my desktop with a hub? There's plenty of room on the back panel for a couple more ports.

I've been waiting months for the iMac refresh to buy my first Mac. I'm hoping for at least:

Clarksfield CPU
nVidia GTX 280M, 260M or something comparable
LED Display

Will I be disappointed?

If they added that stuff I would have to start saving up for one. That said, I highly doubt they would add all features and completely change the mac.

Probably.

Note the iMac generally uses notebook GPUs.

Apple always manages to leave out at least one feature that causes you a serious face palm. Why didn't we get LED displays in the iMacs 6 months ago? Who knows.

So yes, you will be disappointed. It's a given. Such is life.

LED backlights are more sensitive to temperature than traditional lamps. iMacs get rather hot because the PSU is built in, which also causes them to be heated when the fans are off during Sleep. But it's perceived as a key feature - even the TV doesn't have a separate PSU.

Doubt it is the new imac line being released but the apple online store is down right now - "we'll be right back" and has been there for hours...

I just can't see Apple going with Blu-ray. Physical disc media is on its way out and Apple has obvious motive to push consumers towards digital downloads.
Must be nice to be able to download 50gb Blu-Ray 1080p movies in a few minutes because I sure can't.

And I really can't see how physical media can be going out the door since I still know people that don't even have broadband in their area...

With those New Intel chips due out in a couple of days.

Then I'm guessing the two compelling features will be.
Core 3 and Core 4.

Logic will never work with Blu-ray naysayers... it's like trying to convince a 1908 horse-and-buggy guy he really should get one of those new-fangled automobiles for the interim, and he tells you he doesn't need one because soon enough everyone's going to have an airplane and he's going to wait for that because cars are going to be obsolete in a year.

:apple:

You must mean Core i3 and Core i5. I don't think there's a Core i4 and the Core i5 is already out and in a Dell system.

Nothing that compelling about the i3 and i5. Aren't that mostly sample bin seconds off the i7 production?

Nope I meant the i7 quad core. Now that our major software is Multicore ready, nVidia did a deal with intel over the buses, and intel are releasing mobile bad boys on the 23rd. So Apple can pick and choose how they want to spec it out.

Also the Boss is in the mood to start investing in production again.
So really hoping there is a refresh in the next week or if only to bring local prices back in line with our dollar.

i5s are i7s without the hyper-threading. They're VERY impressive and pretty much match i7s if the program isn't meant for 8 cores.

Also, i5s and i7s overclock like crazy. The low-end 920 can go up to 4 GHz easily while barely touching the voltage. They have such a high performance ceiling it's incredible :[

Nothing compelling other than Nehalem being the future of Intel for the next few years. Unless Apple switches to AMD or back to PPC or to ARM, Core i3 and Core i5 are something.

What major software? Handbrake is already able to take advantage of four cores. I'm pretty sure Adobe's CS isn't multi-core aware and I know it's not 64-bit. The whole iLife suite and iTunes need to be made multi-core aware, and 64-bit. There's a ways to go before most major software is multi-core aware.

When did nVidia and Intel hammer out this deal? Because I haven't seen anything about a deal. The 23rd is Wednesday. I seriously doubt Apple is putting any mobile Nehalem in anything until the Q2 2010 (calendar, not financial).

Don't forget Clarksfield is topping out at only 2 GHz. I'd wager that most people still don't know more megahertz isn't necessarily better. That's called the Megahertz Myth. Apple will start implementing Nehalem in its computers (aside from the Mac Pro) later this year or early next year with Arrandale. But even with Arrandale, clock speed is 2.66 GHz, maximum. There's also Clarkdale coming in January, with clock speeds up to 3.46 GHz, but that's a desktop component and we know all to well how Apple likes form over power.

Intel is starting to produce 32nm CPU's and they should be out soon. i think they are supposed to have a graphics card and chipset on the same die as the CPU which will enable even smaller laptops
