HD-DVD ain't coming back. The menu implementation was so awful it was stupid. I have an LG player that plays both, and HD-DVD is a pain to access any special features. No MENUS! Dumb.

That's only because you bought a crappy player that didn't conform to the HD DVD spec and didn't carry the logo (look for it, you won't find it). LG neglected to implement the HDi API that makes menus and interactivity possible. The result is a player that displays video and NOTHING else. But one manufacturer's failure (and they're the ONLY company that couldn't get their s*** together) does not = bad format implementation.

But I agree that it is not, and should not, come back. It's all Blu-Ray now.

Thru HDMI in, you can capture live HD uncompressed VIDEO thru a proper mount.

Ok. So the main audience for the iMac is a) capturing uncompressed HD a lot and b) a regular iMac has all the power for a quality experience? It seems that there are better solutions to this. Plus, I would think for all but pros producing the stream themselves or from a good camera, the inevitable DRM will not make it super useful to any beyond a very few. Maybe they should all get together and make abreakout box for this if it does not already exist.

With Blu-Rau prices being what they are it's hard to get too excited about the possibility of inclusion of a Blu-Ray drive.

Would it be nice? Sure. Am I jonesing for it? No.

Not to be too cynical...

Maybe one of the compelling features is the ability to make full use of all of the features in Snow Leopard?

Just a joke.

On a more serious note, Blu-ray is probably going to feature - the only thing counting against it is no explicit mention of it on the Snow Leopard site for the software side of things, but of course that can change...

why would i need a cheap hdtv if iMac was with HDMI in??

Plus I don't watch TV, I'd love to connect my PS3 to my iMac to watch my blu rays or play a game or two.

I mean that HDMI in connection would be great if they are not going to make blu ray built in.

but even just an HDMI in to watch blu-rays requires software support that at that is moment we can not say is in the imac. if they are going to do that, why not just put in, at least as a BTO, a blu-ray reader/dvd writer combo drive option

prior to about six weeks ago, the paperwork to license blu-ray was horribly complex and nasty. this and the price was part of the 'bag of hurt' that Jobs spoke about previously. hurt because you had to talk independently to like 10 different folks and if even one said no or wanted to jack up the price for his little part of the puzzle, you were over a barrel. Now they have cleaned up this issue and hopefully the price as well and made it a bit easier. so yes it is possible that blu-ray support, including built in drives and writers could be coming. However, I think it is a mistake to think they will be a standard feature in a fall release of the desktops. I do think that there are signs that Apple is flipping their calendar and moving to having the more family friendly desktops in the fall for the holidays and the laptop refresh to go with the back to school period (when that is the highly prized item), but I don't see them having BR ready as a standard in the next month or two. perhaps as a custom order item for the Mac Pro since the creative professional/prosumer groups that are the target for the MP are the biggest group with the jones on for such support. but I think anything in the imac/mini world might have to watch until at least late winter (ie anniversary of the last update) and even then it too could be custom order and perhaps read only on the BR support

I was reading an article off another blog and I'm sorry I can't remember where but it was saying that there's been an independent study of the blu-ray/computer issue and only something like 3.6% of PC computers sold in the first half of 2009 had BR of any kind. and the estimate for the next 4 years is only an increase up to 15%. Daunting numbers really with the way that some folks are screaming about how BR simply must be in all computers. Then again those screamers, who might be 25% of the talkers and talk on a board like this, are probably only about 5% of the Mac users out there and thus maybe .5% of the personal computer users. so perhaps the study is right on the numbers

Physical disc media is on its way out

No it isn't. Really. I refuse to rent or buy HD content from Apple simply because the quality, compared to BR, is dreadful. You also miss out on all the extras. It also consumes a massive chunk of bandwidth.

We're getting 4 films a month, at £2.50 a go, on Bluray, from Love film. We can keep them as long as we like, enjoy the extras. Hell - even watching something on Satellite HD compared to bluray - the quality of Bluray was MASSIVELY superior.

At this stage, Apple are so far behind when it comes to Bluray - it's not a compelling new feature. It's about damn time, and nothing more.

I might be interesting in BluRay the day when BluRay writers are cheap enough so that they can go into devices as standard without upping the price - and better still, when I can purchase an external BluRay writer for less than NZ$200. When that occurs - then I'll give a damn about BluRay.

One device instead of two ? Is that such hard concept to grasp.
I don't buy a computer monitor unless it has a wide variety of inputs. I have picture in picture too! Not to mention my tower has a TV tuner it in.

That takes care of the television and media hub in my room.

Matte!!!!!! I won't buy another one till that happens.

Cmon i was a matte screen supporters... but iMac 24" and MacBook Pro monitors are fantastic.... you don't notice the mirror effect after a little using it or just don't use it near the window

Go to an Apple Center and use it for a while :)
