I was thinking about getting a new iMac if they added something big. The whole bluray on a computer seems like a gimmick at this point. I watch HD anyway. Disk media storage? No, not really. I can get a 100gb drive for backups for about $25 these days.

A cheaper price point would be nice though.

How sweet would it be if they incorporated an HDMI output?
I would definitely buy an iMac if it supported another monitor.

The current iMac has a mini-DisplayPort connection, which can be connected to an HDMI monitor with the correct cable. The previous iMacs had mini-DVI (which worked with HDMI using a converter cable.) Before that, they used mini-VGA on the iMac G5 and iMac G4. This trend goes all the way back to the iMac G3, which had models with a VGA port.

I have an HDTV monitor hooked up to my intel iMac, using a mini-DVI to DVI dongle and a DVI to HDMI cable.

Blu-Ray, hmm, maybe but I'm not interested. It would be cool as an option.

Redesign, yes. If Apple makes it look like this, I'm buying .

Isnt that just a picture of a ipod touch photoshopped on a stand?

I predict a cup holder and new type of mouse.

Quad-cores.

Next-gen cooling technology.

Thinner form-factor.

So . . . two new features:

Faster. Thinner.

why? nothing has been confirmed and the reason you bought your new computer was still valid 72 hours ago

when will the iMac be updated? because if it gets updated in a few months that is reasonable, but like if it gets updated in a few weeks then that's so not cool.

I think the next update will just be a price drop though... or maybe a little spec bump like the inclusion of Bluray. Changing the shape would be unlikely :p

I've always wondered about this: what more could Apple do? It's pretty much a display with an entire computer behind it, and there's not much else they can do (it looks more or less like a display, and how much innovation have we seen in that area lately?).

They've already tried making the whole computer sit as one blob on the desk (iMac G3), a sunflower-esque design (G4), and now they've arrived at something that's barely there, although they've changed the curvature a bit (the original G5s had a flat back) and the enclosure (plastic to metal). I'm not sure what else they could do besides other random changes (for better or worse) to the design, but I wouldn't expect much change in the overall form anytime soon.

After thinking about it like that, to have anything better than the current "arm", they would have to radically redesign the entire system. Making the stand smaller seems near impossible, and bigger wouldn't be beneficial.

Blu Ray isn't compelling anymore.

I hardly use my optical now. The place for movies you bother to own is the harddrive. So I really hope they don't consider this a compelling upgrade or addition.

I'm a long way from an iMac purchase so whatever they deliver won't matter as a new rev will be out when I'm ready. What I'd like to see though is quad core, HDMI out, easy access to the disk drive bays note the "s" on bays and high quality audio in channels.

I just can't see Apple going with Blu-ray. Physical disc media is on its way out and Apple has obvious motive to push consumers towards digital downloads.

Firewire is on its way out and Apple has obvious motive to push consumers towards USB-2. How did that work out?

When the studios allow un-DRMed movies (for purchase) the way the record labels allow un-DRMed music, we can turn to the download speed problem. Otherwise, when Apple kills your iTunes account for whatever reason you lose any movies you have purchased. If you are only looking to rent then DRM works, but the ITMS offers movies for sale as well as rental.

Right now, digital downloads (at least for purchase) are "a bag of hurt", but of course in this instance Apple is not the one doing the hurting.

and blu-ray doesn't seem that important when it's getting so easy to directly hook up your HDTV's to computers now

While this is true, my current household set up would have an iMac across the house from my HDTV (which has a PS3 attached). I still prefer physical HD media (e.g. blu-ray) until my PS3 and Mac talk to each other/play nicely to allow the streaming of content from my Mac to my PS3 (I guess Apple TV has this capablity, but I don't want to have to buy one when I need a new iMac anyway).

If the iMac included a blu-ray drive, I will be first in line. I want the ability to, um, back up my blu-ray content to my hard drive and/or make on-the-go digital copies for my iPhone... my $0.02...

Another monitor as in a "second" monitor......it already does (and always has). You can already get a DVI output (and just slap a DVI to HDMI converter) and call it a day.

First time posting and waiting to buy my first Mac

Since LED backlights take up less space, would the additional space be enough for a desktop CPU and adequate cooling?

unless your able to store the native format without compression what your are stating is not practical, uncompressed trumps every time in my book.

The video output didn't show up until the original slot loading iMac G3, and that it was only available on the high-end model.

If they "fix" the screen to go back to matte I'm definitely NOT buying one. iMacs are for consumers, not professional photographers (they should be using Mac Pros). I want to browse the web, watch videos, play games -- all of those look better with a glossy screen.

I would really like to see Blu-ray but I don't think that it's coming. We would have seen some kind of evidence of it in Snow Leopard, which is going to be out in less than two months and so far there is no mention of Blu-ray whatsoever.

Non Pro to Pro

Blu-Ray's the obvious choice but what else could it be?

SSD?
Better screens?
Matte option?

Odd thing about this rumour is you would assume the tasty stuff would go in the Mac Pro first and then filter down the product line?

Wasn't the glossy screen on the non Pro models first, then to the Mac Pro with the 24" glossy led display. Also the glossy screens on the Intel MacBook Pros after the non Pro models.
