They already have a launch schedule. iPads in the Spring.

The iPad 4 (or 3s if you'd like) was just a minor spec bump, and converting to a lightning adapter.

Agreed. I think the 4 was a 1 time speed bump and the iPad Mini was just a get it out for XMas.

Spring - iPad
Summer - Laptops/Desktops
Fall - iPhone

I'm sorry, the iPad is really the iPad 3.5? So was the iPad 3 really just the iPad 2.5?

-iPad 4 benchmarks are more than double the graphical performance of the *underpowered* A5X processor (nevermind it's 1.3ghz vs. 1 ghz - I will concede that processor speed alone doesn't yield a whole lot of difference)
-iPad 4 radiates much less heat then the iPad 3 (I've used both extensively)
-iPad 4 has an HD front camera which, in real world use, makes a huge difference. FaceTime on the iPad is actually pretty pleasant now!
-iPad 4 has full Siri -- if you're in to that sort of thing
-iPad 4 has lightning. Biggest drawback for me to iPad 4 was lightning and new adapters, but I bit the bullet and can't wait til the next iPhone so I can dump all my 30 pin stuff (still using an iPhone 4).

If it only had a faster A5X I might agree with you, but with a brand new processor that's build on completely different architecture, new camera, WAY better graphics, less heat and lightning, it's hard to call the iPad 4 a 3.5. It was a BIG upgrade.

This is how Apple refers to the "4th gen" iPad:
Hardware Model: iPad3,4
Go to "Settings / General / About / Diagnostics & Usage / Diagnostic & Usage Data" and check out the 3rd line in any file you might find there.

I have iPod Touch 3rd Gen

Regardless there have been a few updates such as the iPod Touch 4 with Camera and the 5th gen with Siri and Retina, I don't feel like I have missed out. Yes I would have loved the camera, I still have a point and shoot for that and I would hardly use anyway. I still have it running iOS 5.0 and does what I need, listen music.

If you own a 3rd or 4th gen iPad, don't let this make you feel like you need the latest. If its currently meeting your needs, stick with and keep it for a while. You are just letting your I want it mentality get the best of you. Yes, you want it, but you don't necessarily need it.

So two rumor mongers are more credible than one?

I'm not saying this won't happen, but I am saying these blabber-wockies make no sizable difference in what might be real. They just whip folks up into sick expectations.

I'd like it to release in March. There have been a plethora of misses by "analysts" while a modicum of hits by the same.

Yup. Healthy competition is finally starting to appear in the tablet market.
It feels a little too kneejerk to see an update every 6 months. Though the majority of the R&D outside of the PCB is done for now and it boils down to just dropping in newer higher specification components like higher density flash or an updated camera. I can see their investment to refining ARM at a 6 month pace to be asking too much. Unless it is just a clock speed jump.

No, normally I look forward to CES and Computex and plan upgrades accordingly.

they will lose so many customers if they keep releasing ipads every 5-6 months until now you knew your device would atleast be the newest for atleast 1 year.... now this just sucks

What difference does it make if they update every year or every 6 months. You still have whatever device you last purchased no matter what they do. Your iPad doesn't automatically become functionally deficient. I don't understand the concept of always needing to have the latest and greatest, unless it's to ensure a lifelong commitment to be in debt.

I'm with the few voices of reason that it's unlikely for Apple to release a mini with Retina this early. The selling point of the mini is the weight, size and battery life, and they would have to be compromised to maintain the performance with the same pixel count as the big iPad.

If they do make it happen however, I'll be the first in line!

I don't have a 4th gen, I have a 3rd gen. To me the 4th gen was pointless other than to show off they're good and chip design.

To be quite honest i think it was more to do with it having the new lightning connector, but once they were there.... they did few other minor imporovments. So in my opinion it would make sense if they bring a new gen this March. As for the Mini, i don't see much point unless they upgrade the screen resolution to retina.

Well, I am waiting for many to sell their 1st gen Minii's. However, I believe that they will sell for a lot less than retail, and possibly, refurbs (when they arrive). So many, from gifts alone, will want to dump it. Also, even though they knew it didn't have a retina screen, there is the larger group that bought it and will sell (especially, if the new one has retina). It will be a buyer's market!!!:D

Whomever buys the used iPad most likely won't care too much for the non-retina, and will most likely be very happy. Win win! :D

I'm not so sure they will move to a regular 6 month upgrade cycle. That would mean much less spectacular upgrades and all the hype around a new Apple product. I think the iPad 4 was an anomaly to play catch up with all the new Android devices in the important pre-Christmas buying season. I think they will update the iPad mini in March because most people agree that it needs a retina display to justify the price but thereafter I can see them going back to an annual cycle simply because there is only so much you can upgrade.

I would hate to see a situation were upgrades are so dull that nobody takes any notice like we've had with the Mac over the past few years.

Besides retina on the Mini, faster procs, being lighter & skinnier, I wonder what new features these new iPads will bring?

"Wings" to stop leaks.

Now we will have iPad 5,11 late 2012; iPad 6,4 early early 2013; iPad 4,2 middle 2013; iPad 7,1 early late 2013; iPad 5,12 late late 2013.

That and iPad "4" would havel left the most expensive iPad on the old Doc connector... While all the iPhones and mini accessories start moving to the new lightening connector. So they tossed the new A6x in the iPad 3 early.

No it doesn't but if this rumor proves out people who upgraded to the 4th gen are going to feel like suckers when a few months later when a re-designed iPad that's thinner and lighter comes out. It's one of the reasons I didn't upgrade as I figured the mini form factor is what they really wanted for the next iPad and would want it out sooner rather than later.

Really? So if Apple releases a new iPad 6 months after you bought yours, somehow your iPad is no longer usable? I don't understand your logic. Why do you feel that Apple will lose customers? Oh wait, perhaps you mean that Apple will lose those customers who feel the need to upgrade whenever Apple releases a new version of a product. Fortunately, most consumers aren't that stupid with their money.

There just milking people for there money i have just got my ipad 4 about 6 weeks ago and now its going to be outdated by apples new ipads its just getting to much and to stupid to keep realising new ipads with out any major change so what ipad 4 is twice as fast as ipad 3 it doesnt matter no app uses all of the ipad 4 processor power.

I hate to break it to you, but your iPad was outdated the moment it was placed on the shelf. There is always something better around the corner. You contradict your first point with your second point. First you say your iPad will be outdated, then you say no app can even utilize the faster CPU of a newer iPad anyway... so why are you upset again?

Agreed. I think the 4 was a 1 time speed bump and the iPad Mini was just a get it out for XMas.

Spring - iPad
Summer - Laptops/Desktops

iPad 4 was released before Christmas for the inclusion of Lightning connector.

The iPad 4 is nothing but an iPad 3 with better CPU and as a giveaway it got a better front camera. The CPU fit in it so it got when it was ready. That was no move to a new update cycle at all.

Eieieieieieiei

Exactly! Aside from us nerds on gadget sites, I doubt people are particularly aware that the item listed simply as "iPad with Retina Display" is gen 4 vs 3. And it's good stuff either way. It's not as though there was a price change or anything.

For ages people have been saying Apple's yearly cycle couldn't compete with the constant barrage of new Android phones and tablets.

Apple seems to have responded (although not as far as the iPhone is concerned - possibly due to them primarily being sold on contract?)

I'm not sure it's a good move. It's better to release when you have something great worth releasing, not when the planet reaches some arbitrary position around the Sun. Maybe Apple do have something genuinely worth a new iPad model.

Apple has to increase the frequency of its updates in order to compete. Like it or not, as Android gets closer to iOS and/or surpasses it in terms of market share and functionality, Apple is at some point very soon going to have to compete on specs. How can Apple keep the iPad and iPhone current and competitive while updating it only annually?

Yea Right.

I guess we all know iPad mini will get Retina.

If both iPads go to. 6 month revision schedule you should plan on the March revision being an all new flagship iPad "5" with thinner form factor and a spec bumped iPad mini with an A6 processor and 1 GB of memory AND NO RETINA. Then in fall the iPad 5 will get a spec bump to an A7X etc. while the mini will get retina. Retina will NOT come to the mini in spring.

I'm just asking, how is it outdated?

Name me one thing the ipad 4 can do which the iPad 3 cannot do. One thing.

It's not outdated if it has the full iOS functionality. This, in my opinion, is jealousy.
Use a Lightning cable.

(I'm making a joke here.)

INsane! They update these things so much ... but it works, they make lots of cash money.

Lol what you are describing is gaining customers actually.

Fine. Give me a retina screen. I'll pay the bump in price to accomplish it. Make it a tiny bit thicker to accommodate its power needs, and I will still pay to have it. Releasing the mini without Retina was a step back, thinness be damned.

It wasn't due to thinness that Apple chose not to equip the Mini with a Retina display. The deciding factor was cost.
