Oh please...and these rumors just die...does anybody really believe Apple will do this? R&D is just way to high, especially considering this is a 1 Gen version of a product. They won't through that out the window in such a short time...

Geez Apple released one product at a slightly different time and MacRumors has nothing better to do then post a rumor how some absolutely unknown person has heard that Apple will already show a new version soon every other day...get a grip...it's not going to happen.

Your iPad 4 won't be outdated, just like my iPad 3 isn't outdated. You're right that no app uses all of the processing power - that's why this isn't a big deal. It still works just as well as the day you bought it.

It would be nice if iOS 6 used even the iPad 3's processing power, as the OS seems to struggle doing simple tasks.

I dunno why so many are upset over the short cycle. I just bought two minis and will stick with them for a while, but I dont care if something better comes along.

It keeps apple competitive. Doesnt mean you have to get every update. My iPad minis are the first time ive updated since the very first iPad.

If they believe they can make money on this, then I see no reason to doubt it.
They tested the waters on the form factor and it was a big success. They will now do as they see fit.

.

Exactly right, and there is ALWAYS something newer, better around the corner.

And to the other persons comment that they need to settle on a launch schedule, WHY. They don't schedule things for anyone's personal comfort. It's a business. They do what makes money. What do you care? Buy or don't buy. As far as I'm concerned they can release a new product every month. Seriously!

[...] There have, however, been growing rumors of shorter update cycles being part of a new strategy for Apple as it seeks to remain competitive in the fast-moving mobile device market and smooth out its sales somewhat throughout the year. [...]

That would make sense for Apple. Especially if the hardware designs have matured enough that there won't be too many more radical changes (e.g. Retina.) Because smaller changes mean quicker model transitions on the various assembly lines. Same basic process with slightly improved parts, less down time, less opportunity cost (i.e. lost sales due to old models being out of stock before new model production can be ramped up to meet demand.)

When you think about it, iPad / iPad mini assembly is vastly simpler than iPhone because of the larger form factor. Positioning the electronics is less critical. Most of the interior volume is taken up by the battery modules, as with iPhone, but there's far more room for error during assembly. And this is probably why there were a huge number of iPad clones even before the first iPad was released: it's easier to fit components into a pad computer than it is to fit components into a pocket-sized phone. (And that's one reason why Samsung likes oversized phones: easier to design and manufacture.)

Whatever Apple is planning to do in the next few years, I'm sure they have carefully analyzed, discussed, and re-analyzed and re-discussed all possibilities over and over again. I'm sure they've got several contingency plans ready, and they're waiting for exactly the right time to implement whichever plan is best for them. And right now the best plan might be to release iPad / iPad mini updates twice a year.

The new iPad mini will not have a retina screen, you guys are setting yourself of for a disappointment.

The iPad mini is not only smaller, but a second budget alternative next to the iPad 2 and when the iPad 2 is gone, it will be the only one.

Giving the iPad mini a retina screen would mean creating a screen with crazy pixel density, it will have to be even more advanced than the current iPad. That's not going to happen with this cheaper model.

On top of that, the need for a retina screen on the iPad mini is not as great as the pixel density is already quite ok.

So you think Apple will just slap a A6 in there and call it a day? I think the only people who will be disappointed on the day the next gen iPad mini gets released, be it in March or over the summer, will first-gen iPad mini owners.

There just milking people for there money i have just got my ipad 4 about 6 weeks ago and now its going to be outdated by apples new ipads its just getting to much and to stupid to keep realising new ipads with out any major change so what ipad 4 is twice as fast as ipad 3 it doesnt matter no app uses all of the ipad 4 processor power.

You should turn on the spelling and grammar check on your "ipad 4."

Would you cut it out, Apple? Wait a ****ing little while. :apple:

Right, we're all sick and tired of your continual innovation. Give the competition a chance to pass you buy. It's only fair to them.

Already?! I'm going to hate the new product cycle. It's obvious, people will buy less often since, six months down the road, they know something better will come out. This will fail.

Just like you skip lunch because you know dinner is coming, then skip dinner because youi know breakfast is coming, Then skip breakfast .......

...Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White today released a new report highlighting some of his observations from this week's CES in Las Vegas, noting that "checks" at the show suggest that Apple is looking to launch the next-generation versions of the iPad and iPad mini in March...

Are you sure this isn't a typo? Maybe he spoke to some "chicks".

It's funny, prior to Apple being the "APPLE" that people know ( &Love), it use to take them YEARS to release a new Apple Performa or G3. The one year cycle was a blessing for us who would have to wait so long for minor processor upgrades. I'm another hand up for an iPad Mini with retina (or higher res) screen. I have a giftcard loaded and ready to go :)

Bring it on Apple.

Still using my iPad1 and my iPhone4. They both do what I want them to do. Nevertheless, I will upgrade in March or July or October or whenever not bc they don't work but because I want to have more photography options. For a few months I'll have the latest and greatest. Then I won't. But I'll still have two pieces of amazing technology that fit into my life. That is all.

People have been complaining that Apple stuff is outdated because they release stuff once a year but now people are complaining their older hardware is suddenly obsolete because something new came out!

It's funny because even when Apple had yearly release cycles some people still said they updated everything too early.

Great! Add retina, then drop the price on the 1st gen mini to $149

I don't think we will see $149, but I am curious if Apple will continue to sell it at a discount. I was thinking something like $250-$279.

Would be lovely if apple spec bumped macs in the same way.

Isn't this more dependent on Intel's CPU release schedule? Apple can release the A-series when they like.

they will lose so many customers if they keep releasing ipads every 5-6 months until now you knew your device would atleast be the newest for atleast 1 year.... now this just sucks

It sucks if they release a new device. It sucks if they don't and the competition does (new android tablets almost weekly). It still sucks when you buy the newest latest tech widget because the next and next next models in some secret R&D labs are so much better, your shiny new widget is stinky slow cruft by comparison before you open the box. So just keep your money in your pocket and move to some Amish farm. They don't worry as much about whether stuff is new enough or not, and are thus much happier than you.

Good News... not sure about the timing though...

No doubt the next mini will have retina, it is a simply business case for Apple - can they fit in new tech like retina and maintain margins - when the cost comes down on the screens, batteries and processors - I am sure it will not be to difficult from an operations perspective to add them to the production process and maintain the margins - heck - they might even take a small hit on margins given the flack they are getting on the mini's resolution.

I got a mini for myself for XMAS - I loved it, but I could not live with the display. I could read text on my iPhone 5 better than the mini and that was not acceptable - and the Apps - like ESPN Sports (whatever) looked like crap - as I could barely read the play-by-play text - small and fuzzy!

I think the timing is aggressive, maybe the mini bump - but not the iPad (too soon) and nobody is complaining about the latest gen iPad.
