Costs $399 new now :(

Which makes little to no sense as the larger iPad (8th Gen) has the same chip and a larger screen for $70 less...
But the larger iPad (8th gen) has a non- laminated display, lacking True Tone and wide color, plus has a 1.2 Megapixel front camera instead of the Mini’s 7 Megapixel front camera.

In short, the Mini 5 is still better than the iPad 8.

Apple has done this before when the current iPad was considered slightly better than the pro because of the CPU. Eventually Apple released a new pro topping the iPad in specs. That being said, I think I'm the only one here who does not want 120HZ or mini led because of cost. I have an aging iPad Pro 10.5 that heats up and barely keeps a charge, it would be nice to replace it with something similar to keep the costs down
Wouldnt the current iPad Air fit the bill for a replacement for your pro?

This makes no sense to me. Why would they upgrade the iPad mini to mini-LED, while neglecting to do the same for the 11 inch iPad?
Because it’s going to be phased out. So, no R&D money is spent there. There will be a even bigger iPad Pro than the 12.9 inch.

The screen is different. It’s unlamented. It’s also in a very cheap chassis. It’s also the model that Apple can sell a lot to a lot of market segments. The mini, on the other hand, is a niche market device. It will also eat into iPhone sales more so than other iPads.

Basically, if you don’t care about anything other than the price when buying a tablet, then sad for Apple, they have no leverage over you. They will compress the price of an iPad down so that they can retain a sale. Otherwise, you will buy an Android tablet. If you do have even a tiny bit of preference on something, then Apple will make every move possible to milk you for that preference. This is called price discrimination under perfect market differentiation in Consumer Theory of Microeconomics.

I think it would be good for for the line-up to introduce the mini and getting rid of the Air (too good of a deal and too close to the 11" Pro). This way you end up getting three size choices (8.5, 11 and 12.9") if you rule out the budget iPad, which is always considered somewhat of an exception.
This would be in line with the future line-up of MacBook models (12, 14 and 16-inch), with the smallest model of each featuring the core design principles while packing medium specs (stereo speakers, A_ chip, mid-range camera setup, etc) just as the smallest MacBook is an Air with similar sacrifices to enter its respective price range.

mini led has better brightness and richer blacks, which are good for a device like the mini which is marketed as an ipad ereader
No. It’s not. I have the 12.9 pro. One of the first things I did with it was switch off the dark mode and change my reading apps to white paper. The glow (blooming) around the letters was and is far too distracting. I don’t notice it much otherwise, but I’m telling you I could not read a story on a black screen with white letters on this mini led.

Note - I’m not a mini-led-hater either. It’s just a trade off with this technology I guess. And while it’s my opinion, I would buy the standard lcd screen iPad if I was going to be mostly reading on it.

My hope for the mini was to stay away from mni-LED for a bit longer.

Unlikely for the next couple of years. The bigger iPad is not expected before several years, and it’s not even certain. And even if it’s made it may just be an additional size

I don‘t think the air is a very good deal. The entry level 11 pro offers a lot more value for the $200 more. Double the RAM, double the storage, almost double the performance, promotion, quad speakers, faster port, center stage and a slightly larger screen for the same size. Even just the RAM, storage, promotion and speakers more than justify the 25% higher price. I am not even mentioning face id as some people don‘t like it.
And I don’t think they are getting rid of 13in MacBooks any time soon

Am i the only one that doesn't read that as an iPad mini with LED screen is on the way?? I read it as a Mini LED Macbook Pro AND an iPad Mini. It doesn't say Mini LED Macbook Pro and Mini LED iPad Mini...

Even just focusing on price for a sec, you can buy the air for $500 in many places now, the pro is half again the price, that’s a big difference. Especially if you are also planning on getting the magic keyboard - the price difference pays for it

you can get the pro for cheaper too and the keyboard argument is just mental accounting, the pro with they keyboard is the same price difference, but still a much better device and you get plenty for the additional money (personally if I am spending $300 on a keyboard I am also ready to put $200 more the get a much better device for the difference)

Mini-LED on the mini doesn’t sound like a reality at this point. (1) Only the 12.9” iPad Pro got mini-LED, which means it’s really expensive and/or hard to produce. (2) The mini may not be the cheapest iPad, but it’s definitely on the lower end of the price spectrum for iPads. If there is a new mini AND a mini Pro, then it makes more sense. But shoving mini-LED into the standard mini seems like a price hike that would disappoint many fans of the smaller tablet. We’ll see, but I’m not buying into that rumor at this point.

People will be happy with a larger screen as long as the device stays about the same size.

People will be conflicted about lack of bezels. Being an owner of a 2020 iPad Pro with slim bezels, I can say I’m not very worried about it for my usage.

Sticking with TouchID is probably a good thing. I haven’t used the iPad Air with TouchID on the power button, but it seems good enough from reviews and comments I’ve read. Some people may have wanted FaceID. I say keep cost down and keep FaceID out of it for now. Eventually I want both TouchID and FaceID on all Apple devices.

That said, I think the mini is targeted at consumption compared to the 'Pro", so I think the best route would be to include OLED vs miniLED.
Yes, and no. The mini is niche and my gut is that Apple is moving toward what those (usually corporate, enterprise, higher-end) users want. The generation minis languished as a low-cost, consumption device and it doesn't make sense compared to the Vanilla iPad for that purpose now. So my guess is these niche clients keeping the mini alive are slowing convincing Apple to release a mini Air or a mini Pro.

I also wonder if Apple is preparing to finally end the iPod and push this new iPad mini as the alternative for those who want the media player, apps, and games without the the phone bits.

Fun time ahead!

The air has been consistently $500 recently, I haven’t seen the 11” pro on sale for less than $750, that’s a huge difference. Personally I decided iPadOS doesn’t take enough advantages of the hardware differences to spend 50% more, I’m not alone.

i got mine for $600 back when the sales were on all the time. I did sadly miss out on the 11" 256gb $600 price mistake at best buy for the lucky few that got that.
