That would be cool, though I don't see why this should only apply to the MacBook Air, and why only to the top end model. I think the plastic MacBook would look amazing in black too, I have no idea why they stopped making it in black at some point.

BlackBook Air? Would be a huge seller. If this is true, expect two things:

1) Backlit keyboard (otherwise keys would vanish in the blackness)
2) Black MBP option

Did you get my anonymous tip that it will be manufactured from toilet paper, making it a flexible computer?

...damn, not anonymous anymore. I guess that's why it isn't published.

the MBA rumor mill is killing me, can we at least expect an announcement some time soon? I've been waiting to get a MBA for almost two months now :(

What kind of announcement? I expect, like other updates, we'll see an ad on Apple's main page along with availability of the new MacBook Air... but nothing official prior to that. The BTS promo finally started, so hopefully the Air is the next on the list...

I guess I can wait a few more weeks if it's something as awesome as a BLACK MacBook Air. So hot.

My last MacBook Pro was the original 15" Core Duo 2.16ghz released in Winter of 2006. I would absolutely love something as different looking as a black MacBook Air.

Forget black (they look so much better in aluminum - they start looking like a PC when they are black), I want a backlit keyboard!

A) Apple's industrial design is distinct enough that they don't have to rely on color to tell people it's Apple. B) The glowing white Apple is both a dead giveaway and even more obvious against black.

Oh, and C) as others have noted, it seems unlikely that they'd release an all black MacBook Air without backlit keyboard. Why does it have to be one or the other?

Well Apple certainly has the expertise to use colors on aluminium this way. They've done it quite successfully with various iPod models. However, I don't think this is Apple's style anymore. We'll see

If it's just an excuse to charge more (the way the "BlackBook" was), then I'll probably stick with the regular color. OTOH, I suspect Apple will do something tempting like add backlighting to the black version only. Also, a black bezel might be less conspicuous. We'll see. I'm more interested in SSD capacity and RAM.

Don't like the look in the mock up picture of the black with the gray track pad. Make the track pad black too.

I think black would be nice. Black metal that is (not plastic). But this rumor was out before the last refresh too. I wonder if it will become the new Verizon iphone rumor? Often repeated and accepted as fact.

black to black.. dont call it a comeback..

My current laptop is a core 2 duo BLACK macbook that I purchased in 2006(i know its old..but it works like the day it was bought.. largely due to my constant tinkering and constant care. the exterior is in mint condition), I wanted to buy Macbook air since its debut but have been holding back because of its ancient and outdated processor (core 2 duo).. Now that the next MBA will be the Sandy Bridge processor (thunderbolt.. MEH!)and in BLACK!(i know its just a color but boy is it BADASS and sticks out in the sea of grey MBA and MBP)...

HEY APPLE, RELEASE THE NEW MBA AND TAKE MY MONEY ALREADY!

If your MacBook is from 2006, I'm pretty sure it's a Core Duo and not a Core 2 Duo.

This would be great but if anything it would be a 3G model at high end, not just color change.

I don't think we'll see 3G on macs until the one device per carrier split goes away. They is no way Apple is going to have multiple versions of Macs for each carriers.
