I like the Touch ID idea for the Mac line but I really hope they extend this through the magic trackpad 2. I've effectively retired my rMBP now for my iPad 12.9" and just use my Mac Pro for desktop use. I don't expect I'll be reaching over to the case to authenticate with Touch ID.

Edit: I guess that should be Magic Trackpad 3, I know the existing version doesn't have any hardware for this.

I feel like my arms would get tired quickly... It looks like a fun gimmick, I just don't know what the use case would be on a 13" / 15" laptop screen. This makes so much more sense on a large form factor screen or VR.

I'm not thinking they'd use it for everything but after watching a guy with a touch screen at work navigating using his touch screen it makes sense. The only draw back is the finger prints. This solves that.

I think Mag-Safe will definitely go away with the new products. The idea of needing a power adapter with a proprietary connector is going away, period. My Dell XPS 13, for example, does still have the round barrel type AC adapter and port on it. But really, it's not necessary. You can also charge it through one of its USB ports with any standard USB device charger. Dell only keeps the traditional power adapter because they know you might want to have other things in the USB ports while you charge it, and the same barrel connector fits many other Dell notebooks - so it's "standardized" in that sense.

I'm sure Apple will want people to get into the mindset of charging via one of the USB-C connectors instead of needing to take up space for a port that does nothing except let you hook up a charger.

I really hope you're right. Issue with the pictures is that it shows 2x USB C on either side.

I'm just as worried what they'll be doing with MagSafe. I'd be heartbroken if they ditched it from the Pro portables.

So next 60-90 days we could/will see
  • Updated iPhone
  • Updated Watch
  • Updated MacBookPro
  • Updated iOS
  • Updated OS X
  • Updated WatchOS
Maybe these as well?
  • Updated iPad/Mini
  • Updated iPad Pro 12"
  • Updated iMac 5k/8k
  • Updated Mac mini

We can only hope.
Then again, we might just get:
  • Updated Watch
  • Updated WatchOS
  • Update Watch bands

Yes and the Alienware/high end XPS ones have a light on it to indicate when charging. They're completely ripped off from the PowerBook/iBook. The only reason they got away with shamelessly stealing the design is because Apple moved onto something better.

You don't want to be in a position where tripping over a cable will mean ripping a port to pieces or damaging your laptop. MagSafe is so important; especially as you can see whether it's charging or not (with the light). Non-warranty repairs will go through the roof if that's what they do.

If they're going to ditch a dedicated port, I really hope they at least find some way to keep the magnetic element to prevent damage from the cable being tugged.

Love the touch bar idea, not sure about putting Touch ID in the power button though, I could see less advanced users wondering why pressing down too hard and long for Touch ID keeps making their computer turn off... Better to make it a different button/key, IMHO (or else require a modifier for the power button to completely turn the computer off).

Reminds me of the time Lenovo tried to remove the Fn buttons on one generation of their X1 Carbon notebooks and it failed miserably. I think it could have worked, so hopefully Apple can do a better job.

Give me this Apple ........

Maybe. Maybe not on this notion …

BUT displaying a fine creativity and imagination which should perhaps be employed at Apple.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to put in a 6 month delayed "bug" into MacOS. After the initial wave of new MacTops have been sold, suddenly you will HAVE to buy an iWatch to unlock your MacTop. "Error 13: Computer must be unlocked with iWatch". Engineers stopped running Apple long ago...now it is the BizSharks and Gucci boys running the show.

It's better than a status bar on top of the keyboard. Sure it looks cool, but what extra productivity do you get from it?

Lots more. You keep the Dock and the top menu bar as they are. The status bar will then add additional features per app.

For instance, in Finder, it would be the standard FN keys as they are now. In Photoshop, it might bring up different features for quick access. Maybe most used features. Maybe the user can even customise it to be how they are.

The potential is almost limitless. This isn't replacing anything. The dock and the menu bar will stay the same. It's adding functionality.

Yea, I'm not saying it has to be exactly like the picture, but something similar would be great. I couldn't find any better mockus.

Hopefully not a brewing Lenovo > Apple patent lawsuit. Lenovo patents it and fails in the market... Apple is able to successfully deliver it to the market... Lenovo sues.

If they announce these in September, that would be awesome. But I wonder what the availability would be like. There was an article saying Kaby Lake is likely a 2017 release, and I can't see them waiting all this time to use Sky Lake, and have the newer CPU's release a couple months later.

Dream on...Planned obsolescence (and broken computers) help Tim sell product. Unlike the old way where quality, great service and usability made Mac's the best computers in the world.

Good point, as I was just going by what was shown. But if that do that, it damn sure better have quicker development than force touch does.
