I always felt that Apple had such loyalty to their customers as we did them. We paid much more for the OS to get a very cool laptops that, spec wise, would have been 1/3 the price if it were windows. I switched back to Apple in 2007, paying the premium price for that fantastic OS and never looked back. The upgrades that came, not incredibly often, were usually spec bumps and you could live with it.

The iphone was pretty regular (although the 3GS was very eh, the internals did make a difference when navigating iOS 3.0). The iPad I thought was going that route, too.

The 4S, really using Siri to push a spec bump when it could have run on the 4 was lame. I was disappointed and for the first time, did not feel a need to line up for a device.

I had bought every generation of the iPad up until this iPad 4/3S. I bought it in April, and in October a updated "twice as fast" one comes out. That was really telling. They had never done that before. Wait a year and hit me with a mediocre spec bump, maybe I will still bite. Millions usually do. Six months? Now that is just nuts.

Please understand, I am not complaining that they are trying to make money, but why do they want to put themselves in the same boat as Microsoft and the hugely fragmented Android market? Why have crazy nonsense like the Sony upgrade policy? I had many Sony Palm Pilots, their life cycle, not kidding, was 2-6 months before the "S" model would come out.

I felt with Apple, this company respected us in the way that we would not feel cheated out of an upgrade. I don't know if this article will turn out to be true, but I can't help but feel that way. I used to think I had a great relationship with Apple. She is a high maintenance expensive dame, but I felt loved. Now I feel used.

Apple isn't your friend. No offense or anything, but people have this mentality that companies owe them... Or people stick up for them like they are buddies. If apple showed loyalty to their customers they would give them benefits from their loyalty. Like Jimmy bought the last 3-4 iPads... Here is some iTunes $$ as a thanks.

Microsoft is doing that now with Xbox Live celebrating 10 years. People who have been with them for 10 years are getting(I believe) a free xbox.

Apple doesn't do these sort of things, although it would be nice.

Why?

I think all that would really happen is an adjustment of buyer expectations.... I mean, if I realize Apple is going to start releasing updates to a product every 6 months or so, I'm just going to stop paying so much attention to them until I'm ready to upgrade the device. But I'm still going to like their products as much as I ever did, and I'm still going to buy upgraded models occasionally.

Right now, Apple tries to get people to upgrade based on more of a pent up desire for a product that hasn't been updated as often as many of its owners would like. And sometimes (like with the iPad 2 to 3), many of those who do the upgrade realize it wasn't really so necessary after all.

too much too soon will turn off buyers @ Apple price points......

Bring it.
They do what they want, when they want.

If it meets my hopes/expectations for the price, I'll buy; if not, I'll wait.
In that sense, I could care less about their product cycles.

Predictability is nice, but this is a fluctuating market that didn't even exist (or resemble its present form) prior to 2007.

... and coming from digitimes? I wouldn't get worked up about it anyway.

Whether his 'rumour' is true or not, since when has Digitimes become a reliable source of anything ?

Seriously MacRumors team, if you need more news staff please recruit people who would be more than willing to research and stop quoting half baked analysts on notoriously unreliable websites as your front page news items.

I pay my yearly donation for a reason, and recycling detritus is not it....

I just hope it's not a 5S. Whether the design is good or not consumers seem to want to see something different in both hardware and software improvements.

They pulled it off with the 4 and 4S, I'd be surprised if they had the same success with the 5/5S unless the added software features are incredible.

Two phone screen sizes would be a good idea too, that way everyone could get the screen size they prefer.

2 phone choices would be AMAZING!!

Didn't we just have a story claiming the ramp up production for the next iphone was to give them a surplus when they launch in September?

Eh, the fun of rumors I guess. We'll see the new phone when we see it. :)

So, assuming they aren't stolen by then, we'll have a pile of DOA phones from trickle battery loss over as much as nine months of sitting in a warehouse.

If there is any truth to rumors of the 5s going into productn it is likely test units, nothing more.

How often they release stuff doesn't really bother me except that it will end up hurting their re-sell market. That just hurts their customers though, and not them (other than app sales, they don't make money on aftermarket resell).

As far as people wanting to keep up with the latest and greatest: get over it. We are in the small incremental upgrade zone for the iPad and iPhone form factors. The last major functionality improvement for both was getting Retina. Now it is mostly just processor and memory spec bumps for at least a few more years. Oh, and the iPad Mini needs to get retina... I'm surprised it didn't come out of the doors as a retina device.

I just bought an iphone five last week and still think it's a great idea.

There are no major tech innovations to do anything more than a baby bump, which gets Apple **** cause 'they waited a year to give us THAT' so why not baby bump more often when folks can counter that it has only been six months since the last bump. Same with iPads. At this point they will be little steps as component prices come down and capicities go up. In a year or so they might have the bits for a retina Mini but even that isn't going to be seen as a huge step after so many sites bashed Apple for not doing it in the first place (forgetting what a drain that display is on the bigger battery etc)

Really dislike how Apple releases new stuff in 1 year or in a half year. Because they know people have the "I need the latest and greatest" mindset.

wrong. most normal people dont compulsively upgrade their stuff. only enthuthiasts like those on this site.

Personally, I don't see why it would be necessary for them to create an iPhone 5S already. My iPhone 5 is perfect in terms of hardware. The phone is light, beautiful, durable, and the screen is one of the best i've ever seen.

The 5S isn't being made or you. It's being made for the 4S buyers from last year that aren't so obsessive that they bought the 5.

What they should be working on is fixing iOS 6. Even on this new iPhone, the lock screen lags, the music player freezes and crashes, the entire phone freezes, etc.

It is highly unlikely that the hardware and software are being done by the same team. Just like they also aren't the lawyers, so whatever other team should be working on whatever and not suing etc

This is one rumor that would serve Apple well. The sooner Apple releases an _ innovative_ new iPhone, the better.

.

Unless they do something crazy like a paper thin see through display you can wrap around your wrist with every possible cell frequency etc perfectly functioning 25/8 and sells for $50 unlocked and off contract, it will be blasted as non innovative.

As for your drop the wall etc, it won't happen. Such tactics are against Apple's core. If you demand a fully user controlled device then Apple's not for you

Apple...

You had me. Every year, once a year. You had me buying a phone.

Switch to the "Android handset lifecycle" and you'll lose me. I'll buy a new device on an "as needed" basis (i.e. mine breaks) rather than an "as wanted" basis.

I only upgrade every 2 years... they may get me to upgrade annually at this rate.

The difference between the Apple model and the Android model is you're switching ecosystems... each vendor/carrier configuration leaves you with major conversions/support model changes.

====
6 month upgrades are not a problem as long as the upgrades follow a path and don't start branching into oblivion.

2 phone choices would be AMAZING!!

Have you tried using a 4S after using a 5? After having my 5 for a few months its unbearable to use my wife's 4S, just seems like too little screen real estate. I'm confident they will stick with the 4" size

It's still nearly impossible to find iPhone 5's in stock to purchase... Yet they are going to be having new phone models come out Q2-Q3 2013? Seems a bit foolish if you ask me. They would have to start building the phones in March to build up enough product for a May/June launch... Just doesn't seem practical at all if you ask me.

ok. So if I use an upgrade from a phone on my account, can i transfer the my current number to the discounted phone?

That is a question for your carrier as said transfer depends on their policies

Microsoft is doing that now with Xbox Live celebrating 10 years. People who have been with them for 10 years are getting(I believe) a free xbox.
.

Not all of them. It's a raffle type gig and US users only. The deal for everyone is that one particular game is free to those that signed up a full ten years ago and about a dozen other particular titles are half price.

Doubt the iphone rumor. Ipad maybe.
I think this just a rumor from the competion trying to influance the sales of ipads and iphones in the holiday season.

Isn't it that June-ish had been the original launch dates for iPhones? Apple has the home court advantage here. The 5 to the 5s will be a bit of a hassle for them, but once it goes back to its original release date, everything will just fall back in place. They will get more money in the 3rd and 4th quarter annually if they go back to their iPhone launches in June.

I wonder what it would take for those who buy the latest gear to skip a model. I have a buddy who buys every new ipad and iphone that's released. He can afford to but at what point does it become a pain for people; 6 months, 3 months or earlier? :)
