Its stupid to ask you any tech question because you have NO knowledge on the subject, but what is better in ipad mini than in new nexus 7? Where is the "quality"

It is stupid to assume that anyone who have a different opinion then yours (meaning not everyone likes junk) have no knowledge on the subject.

----------

Then you clearly have no idea in technology.

Who the f are you to say someone to stop spiking?

Whining and spiking (I am sure you mean speaking) are not the same thing ;)

I Am not assuming!

When WSJ says, "people familiar with the matter", that means "Apple".

This is a clear message from Apple to kill the rumors started today that the next Mini would not have retina. They don't want people rushing out to buy Nexus 7 thinking retina isn't coming.

Do you honestly think that the average consumer makes their choice based on a product having 'retina' display?

----------

Great, 3 different screen manufacturers to ensure adequate supply

This translates to another go around in the Apple screen lottery process. Each manufacturer's screen will be slightly different and some inferior to others.

Typically, the LG/Sharp panels are superior to the Samsung ones so I am guessing the people that get these will have slightly better displays than the Samsung panels.

I don't know about you guys but I would rather have a limited supply at launch with consistent, quality displays being produced as opposed to a surplus at launch with a mixture of sub-par panels thrown in there.

Then again, the latter is what will happen because it is how :apple: generates the biggest profit.

And I would bet that if you didn't know about the different suppliers and/or didn't hang on a tech forum that you wouldn't know the difference - IE 99.999% of Apple's iPad sales.

For me, the retina screen is a nice add-on, but I care more about the processor. I want at least an A6, because I routinely tap out the A5 right now. It's just not fast enough.

I agree. And more RAM. I was set to but the mini because I love the form factor but when I found out it had the same internals as the iPad 2 I stopped. I had to upgrade my iPad 2 because I was getting low memory crashes all the time. It had pretty much become unusable for me. Gave it to my grandkids and it runs their kiddy games just fine. But my use habits, well....

Anyway, we'll see what the internals look like with the next upgrade. If it has the internals of the current iPad 3 I'll buy, retina or not. Otherwise, Nexus 7 for me.

I think anyone that researches their tablet purchases either online (ranges from 50-90% depending on the study) or in a store where employees explain differentiating features of products before making a decision knows what the benefits of a retina display are. The current iPad and MacBook Pro have "with Retina Display" in the actual title of the product.

I agree that we often get carried away on sites like this thinking that everyone evaluates products the way we do (which is clearly not true), but this is one time where I'd say that it would be hard not to know what "retina display" means because it is the core feature of the product. People may not be able to explain exactly what it is, but they will be able to tell you at least that it is a better/best screen and is therefore desirable if you have a choice.

When I bought my grandfather an iPad several months ago, the first question he asked was, "is this the one with the clearer screen? I read that for people my age it would be easier to see."

tl;dr - Let's give people a little credit. Humans are smart.

Yup, keeping shareholders happy with their dividends. SJ is rolling in his grave.
Too much focus on stock price = 0 innovation. :apple:

You don't think shipping a non retina mini would have a negative effect on the stock price?

Hope Apple aren't getting too greedy here. Retina seems fairly much a given standard these days.

Another non-Retina model would be a tough sell.

its never been about greed. it's about battery -- weight and power consumption. and perhaps display yield. thats it. its not greed because they would surely pass any costs onto us with a margin.

----------

iPad mini with Retina will happen autumn 2013 because go Nexus7/Google.

wrong -- whatever is being released in the fall has been in the design pipeline much, much further back than June/August (when the Nexus7 was released). apple has its own product roadmaps.

----------

Very simple:
New iPad Mini RETINA = Apple gets my $$$$
"New" iPad Mini NO RETINA = Apple WON'T get my $$$

Hi! I work for Apple. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts on this matter. I'll be sure to get a report to Cook, ASAP!

Again, thanks for letting us know.

Trying to slip in another non-Retina model would be a cheeky attempt to milk the cow a little more. And yes, Apple do care about profit margins, massively.

Fortunately, I think, Apple believes that Retina is the way to go from here on in.

Now if they could just upgrade that MBA line too...

Soooo I just received an iPad mini as a gift...today. Any thoughts on what I should do now?

Enjoy it. Treat it nicely. Put it up on eBay a week before the keynote. Use the funds to purchase the 2nd gen Mini.

Minis are currently selling on eBay for around $275-$310 depending on condition (16gb wifi). You may be able to swing the whole thing for $10-30 out of pocket depending on how you play your cards.

And you still have no idea about tech. And that is a fact.

It allways amazes me when people talk about facts without knowing anything. I wish Macrumors would do something about trolls like yourself who have been floading this site recently. But then again, I am sure no one takes you seriously.

Back to your fandroid trash now.

If they want to make devices in different colors they really need to have the front match otherwise it just looks off.

Because of your lack of knowledge you have feeling people are trolling you (i bet it happens a lot for you). Learn a thing or two and then you wont have this feeling.

Since i have no android device and i don't see owning one in near future so it's hard to be fandroid. But with you knowledge (or lack of it) everything is possible.

p.s. you are not aware that you are hidden fandroid also since you use a lot of android features (with year or two delay-it takes Apple some time to copy them). With iOS 7 you will have even more android features.

Yeah, bla bla bla. I hear that every day.... same tune, different user.

Then clearly there is problem with you.

I am Apple user but if you think that there are no better solutions that Apple's than sorry to burst you fanboy bubble.

I completely agree. Without a retina display, I don't see a ton of these moving off of the shelves. They could obviously release a cheaper volume version of the iPad mini without a retina upgrade, but if they keep the $330 price point, I just don't see much consumer motivation there. If they put retina in at $330, I feel like they have a huge opportunity for sales. It would be easy to sell this device, with the retina display, to a consumer. Even people who bought the iPad mini last year would likely want to upgrade.

Personally, I'll probably only buy a mini if it has retina, or if they cut the price of the refreshed non-retina mini by a lot.

The retina MBA is an entirely different issue though. I don't know if that's in the cards at this point. Maybe in a year they'll release one, and only if they can get the prices on the displays down more.

Ah yes, good point; more RAM too. I regularly run Sampletank, JamUp XT Pro, and GarageBand, and the more power, the merrier. The iPad is an excellent scratchpad for musicians, and more horsepower always helps with that. Whereas the retina looks nice and all, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

So Gruber is skeptical about a retina mini due to battery life (like Dalrymple he's pushing the WSJ review that dinged the Nexus 7 for poor battery life). He doesn't think Apple will sacrifice battery life, thickness and weight. But why can't Apple offer both? A non-retina mini as the low price iPad. And then a retina mini for those who are willing to sacrifice some battery life/thicknes/weight and higher price for a retina screen. Of course if battery life was way worse they Apple wouldn't do it. But if, say, a retina got 9 hours compared to 11-12 for non retina I think some people would make that trade off.
